The Naked Philosopher, by Paul Margolis

When a famous philosopher vanishes, his estranged son must summon the detective skills that failed him in his darkest hour.

Three years ago, Jack was a brilliant young detective with the LAPD. Now he plays poker to make ends meet, and to forget the horrific event that ended his police career. Out of the blue Jack gets a call from his father Joseph Pearl, a distinguished Harvard professor who is in Los Angeles for a philosophy conference. The two haven't spoken in years yet Pearl seems anxious to discuss some matter in person, behavior strangely out of character for the emotionally-distant dad who Jack still blames for the family tragedy that tore them apart. But when the philosopher fails to show up and can’t be found, Jack knows something is wrong and feels compelled to find him.

As his shaky detective instincts kick in, Jack tracks down a beautiful yet troubled Yale grad student named Claire who was having a clandestine affair with Pearl. Together they search for the man they both have issues with and uncover secrets and lies in the world of philosophy, including a trail of murder and no shortage of colleagues who wanted Pearl dead. The more Jack risks his life for answers, the more he fights old demons and his growing attraction to Claire. Then just as he learns the shocking truth behind his father’s disappearance, Jack finds himself drawn back into the haunting, unsolved case that got him kicked off the force.

Impossible to put down, THE NAKED PHILOSOPHER is a gut-wrenching, heart-stopping crime thriller about family and revenge that keeps the reader guessing to the very last page.

Terrific suspense/thriller!
By Ken
I order this book after reading a rave review and read it in 2 sittings (even though it's 360 pages), which is a good indication of what a page turner it is. I looked up the author and found out this is his first novel, but was not surprised to learn he is a successful screenwriter. The book is very 'cinematic,' a super-fast read, and I wouldn't be surprised if this book ended up as a Hollywood film some day.

The book is structured by intercutting between various stories that converge. It's about a son (ex-LAPD) who investigates the disappearance of his intellectual but emothionally distant father (a philosophy professor - hence the title!). Over the course of the investigation, the father and son come to learn about each other. That might make it sound like a drama, but the story is really a page-turner suspense/mystery.

Anyway, there are lots of great twists to the story, so that's all I will say. But I hope the author writes another book.

Highly recommended!

If this book doesn't become a movie something is terribly wrong; it is so visual and compelling
By Skatejam
I am not a big reader, but this book came alive to me. It is so suspenseful, thrilling, with engaging characters, plot twists and more, much more. I wanted to see how it was going to end but I did not want it to end. It grabs you and takes you on a delirious journey. I just could not put it down. If this book doesn't become a movie something is terribly wrong; it is so visual and compelling. Just when I thought I had it figured out, along comes a well thought out twist and I go along on another ride. It is fast paced, masterfully written and a true page turner. I read it on an airplane and was never aware of the time as we landed. I consider it a must read.

While the Naked Philosopher is a suspenseful detective novel, with great characters and settings and more than enough twists and turns for the aficianado, it also draws on a deep emotional reservoir in the form of a complex and unresolved relationship between father and son. The father in question is a famous philosophy professor, Joseph Pearl, who's broken a two year silence with his ex-LAPD detective son, Jack, using as an excuse a philosophy conference being held in L.A. When Joseph disappears without warning, Jack sets out to find him, and, in the process, uncovers a great deal he didn't expect about his father, himself, his father's women, and the ideas and rivalries that fuel the world of contemporary philosophy.

The Naked Philosopher is a page turner with a brain. Do yourself a favor and read it.

SKIN, by Tanya Allan

SKIN – a fantasy set in reality

Just for a moment, imagine you are a normal human being, living a relatively satisfactory existence as one of the two genders that form our race. You think you are content inside your own skin.

Now imagine being sentenced to live in the skin of the opposite gender for the rest of your life. There is no parole and no early release for good behaviour.

You must serve the sentence.

There is only one escape: -
•It involves physical pain in the form of surgery.
•It involves emotional pain in the form of family conflict and aggression.
•It involves social pain in the form of unemployment and isolation.
•It involves mental pain in the form of depression, anxiety and stress.
•It involves spiritual pain in the form of uncertainty, doubt and guilt.
•It involves financial pain in the form of expensive drugs and many different treatments, operations and procedures.

My name was Edward Abbott; it isn’t any more.

I thought I was normal, but then I realised that I was different. Now I am what I should have been.

After many harsh experiences in my life, I met a man.

This man forced me to answer a question,
“…Surgery aside, what is the main thing that prevents you from going for the existing procedure?”
I thought about it for a moment.
“I suppose having to live in the body of a male, trying to look like a woman just to prove that I’m able to do it. I’d be terrified of being discovered.”

The man also said,
“…My research has reached that point whereby I believe it possible to change gender without the surgeon and his scalpel.”
“In theory, right?”
“No, the theory time is passed. I believe that it can be done for real.”
“So what’s the catch?” I asked.

Is there a catch, or can it really be done?

Join me as I found out.

Saving one little starfish
By Samuel Rafael
There is no growth without change. For Edward, truer words were never spoken as he finds himself transformed into the lovely and self-actualized, Emilia. This is accomplished with the assistance of Tom, a man who has the scientific expertise to make transgender dreams happen, and as we come to find out, by rather unique means. As a male, Edward was not a person who was obsessed with transformation to womanhood, just suffering from a vague feeling of being out of kilter with life and only focused on expressing his feminine persona in the privacy of his own domain. However, as they say, timing is everything. So when Edward losses nearly all that he holds dear, including his beloved Carly, the time is right for Tom to apply his scientific knowledge and loving assistance in an attempt to save, as he so altruistically relates, "even one little starfish." Tanya Allan's novel "Skin" is a lovely and highly romantic work by a prolific author who writes eloquently about such issues. It is a book that holds your interest from start to finish.

it's okay, but a little disappointing
By Tom M
I am sorry to say that I didn’t care for this story. I do enjoy stories with magical transformations so that part didn’t bother me. What bothered me was the transformation was almost secondary in the story. I think the story could be edited to remove the male portion of the lead character and be rewritten to tell the story of a woman who married a Frenchman. Her husband then died of cancer and she suffered heavy depression as a result. She then met and fell in love with a wealth man much her senior. She becomes his mistress and then his wife, taking over his empire after his death. Doing so would have changed the story very little, which is a measure of how little of a role the transformation played in the overall scheme.

Towards the end of the story where the heroine made love to a man for the first time, became pregnanty, gave birth, married a third man and was pregnant with his child, all like it was the most natural thing in the world, which it wouldn’t have been for someone that was transformed. I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did.

Skin - if only ????
By Amazon Customer
I just finished reading another of Tanya's wonderfull books. Skin is so uniquely different that one must read it. So very many of us have been so very far down as Edward was, not knowing where to go. I loved that he found a benifactor that was able to save him and introduce him to Emilia. This romantic story is very well written and very well researched as the stories entertwine and the characters come together. We've all known someone like Tom that has a rough exterior and a soft center. I identified very much with Tom trying to portray the tough Brit so fed up with the frailites of others and yet Emilia was able to see through it all and fall deeply in love with him. Tanya's skill in story telling and writing is really wonderful and I eagerly await the next book and the one after that. The only negative, to quote another person that revied this book, is that I finished it. Thank you Tanya Allan very much!

Morocco That Was, by Walter Harris

Here are the vanished days of the unfettered Sultanate in all their dark, melodramatic splendor-a mingling of magnificence with squalor, culture with barbarism, refined cruelty with naive humor. Until 1912 Morocco never suffered foreign domination, and its mountainous interior was as closed to foreigners as Tibet. WALTER HARRIS (1866-1933), though, was the exception. He first visited in 1887 and lived in the country for more than thirty-five years, and as the Times correspondent had observed every aspect of its life. He was an intimate of at least three of the ruling Sultans (as well as King Edward VII) and a man capable even of befriending his kidnapper. It was said that only three Christians had ever visited the walled city of Chechaouen: one was poisoned, one came for an hour disguised as a rabbi, and the other was Harris. Originally published in 1921, Morocco That Was is alternately sharp, melodramatic, and extremely funny. The combination of perceptive and reliable observer, and romantic eccentric, makes this book a classic of its genre.""- Times Literary Supplement.

About the Author
Walter Harris was born in London in 1866, one of seven children of a prosperous business man. After schooling at Harrow and a short time at Cambridge, he left England to travel, and managed to visit Constantinople, India, Egypt, Archangel, Yemen and South Africa before settling in Tangier at the age of 20. He worked as a journalist, eventually salaried on The Times, continued to travel, like an English Indiana Jones, to areas of the Middle East never previously visited by Europeans, and built four houses in Tangier. He married once, though he was predominantly homosexual, and died of a stroke in 1933.

fascinating
By kaioatey
Harris was a Times correspondent from the 1900s Morocco who witnessed the tumultuous transition from quasi-independent sultanate to French occupation. Yet he was also much more - an insider with access to the court and the sultan, someone who could move with relative freedom across the country occupied by a rapacious government, semi-independent Berber tribes, prosperous Jews who were mostly left to their devices milking hapless Arabs through any imaginable sort of trade, assorted bandits and Italian, Spanish and German spies. Morocco was a strategic pawn in the maneuvering between European powers; Harris documents with tragic precision how Europeans manipulated the hapless well-meaning but weak sultan Mulai Abdul Aziz with gimmicks, tricks and toys. The country was held together by force represented by sultan's army and sultan himself - capricious, unfair, childlike, brutal, controlled by a scheming vizier yet, in a weird way, innocent. Everyone was out to deceive him and suck him dry, so sultan used Harris as (perhaps his only trustworthy) adviser for politics, etiquette, European gadgetry and fun. Harris, after all, was a pukka sahib in the best possible sense of that designation, with an unflappable confidence and courage of the English gentleman (they don't make'em anymore).

There are priceless descriptions of the country and its people. Audiences with the sultan, sumptuous meals, court intrigues. Harris has much affection for the country even as he documents the cruelty, avarice, brutality, naivete, sufferings - but also generosity and expansiveness of its people. Then, as today, walking the corridors of the casbah meant every man for himself. In Harris' view, the French brought sorely needed stability to the country, together with the security and prosperity to the middle classes of Morocco. One can see the legacy of the French today in the roads, the language and bureaucracy.

The book is often light-hearted and funny. It's also sad even a bit incredulous when describing the sufferings of the people at the hands of the powerful. Above all, it provides a priceless glimpse in a world that was. If you are contemplating a visit - read this book.

Absorbing account of turn of the century Morocco
By A Customer
Walter Harris, London Times correspondant and 30 year inhabitant of Tangier, delivers the diffinitive account of pre-protectorate Morocco and the Moroccan Royal Courts. This eyewitness account of an ancient culture coming to grips with an overwhelming Western influence is both absorbing and hillarious to the point of disbelief. Harris' tales of Berber rebels and a matter-of-fact Sultanry, in addition to his coverage of the inevitabile process of European colonialization, captures the loss of innocence which befell a still vital land. A must read for anyone interested in North African history.

[Read by Chris Sorensen]

Despite what you might have heard, diabetes is not a lifelong condition. It does not have to shorten your life span or result in high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, or other life-threatening ailments. In fact, most type 2 diabetics can get off medication and become 100 percent healthy in just a few simple steps. And using these same steps, most type 1 diabetics can cut their insulin in half and maintain excellent health and quality of life into old age. In The End of Diabetes, Dr. Joel Fuhrman shows how you can prevent and reverse diabetes and its related symptoms and lose weight in the process. The End of Diabetes is a radical idea wrapped in a simple plan: eat better and end diabetes. While the established medical protocol aims to control diabetes by limiting carbohydrate intake, monitoring glucose levels, and prescribing bottomless doses of medicine, Dr. Fuhrman believes this long-standing approach to fighting type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes is wrong--and possibly fatal. Designed for anyone ready to enjoy a healthier and longer life, Dr. Fuhrman's plan is based on a single formula: Your Health Future (H) = Nutrients (N) / Calories (C). Foods with a high nutrient density, according to Dr. Fuhrman, turn our bodies into the miraculous, self-healing machines they can be, which results in significant weight loss, improved health, and ultimately, the end of type 2 diabetes and other diseases. -- In engaging, direct, and easy-to-follow language, The End of Diabetes supplies the science and clinical evidence to prove that type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure are not inevitable consequences of aging. They are reversible and preventable. In addition, Dr. Fuhrman presents evidence that type 1 diabetes does not have to mean inevitable devastating complications or an early death. Type 1 diabetics can take control of their health with Dr. Fuhrman's plan. This simple and effective plan offers great food, starts working right away, and puts you on a direct path to a longer, better, fuller, disease-free life. Diabetics and their doctors must read this book -- it will save lives and change the face of diabetic care.

The End of Diabetes: The Eat to Live Plan
By infinite
When I read the recipes in the back of the book I thought they were so radical that no one, unless they were, 'on death's doorstep', would eat that way. Well, I don't see 'crow' as one of the options but, if it were, I'd be eating it. I was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago and since then, my life has been a rollercoaster between feeling awful and just fair. Although I'd incorporated more exercise into my lifestyle and my blood sugar had gone down, it didn't change my overall feelings of well being. Seemed no matter what combination of foods I ate, I couldn't seem to sustain 'feeling good'.

I decided I'd try one or two of the less 'outrageous' recipes and go from there. That was just about a month ago and I'm still trying the recipes. One day about two weeks into eating this way, I had a hamburger and french fries. I'm not kidding, I felt so awful the next day I could barely function.

I have a freezer full of meat that I'm boxing up to take to the food bank. I gave a gallon of 1% milk away a few days ago. I'm also taking all noodles, pasta, etc.

I'm also eating steel cut oats and taking red rice yeast. My cholesterol was down almost 50% my last blood test.

So, like me, you can delude yourself into thinking you could never incorporate a diet like this into your lifestyle OR, you can try it and, like me, be amazed at how great it tastes, how fantastic it makes you feel and, wonder of wonders, you can eat as much as you want......and STILL lose weight!

I'm grateful to Dr. Fuhrman for all the research and work he's done to produce the book and the recipes. I truly think it's a life saver. I understand that his other book, 'Eat to Live', also has some great recipes.

I see on his website you can sign up, for a nominal sum, and get additional recipes and recommendations, etc., personally, I think that's, 'milking', it but, that's just my opinion. The more you become accustomed to fixing food this way, the more adventurous you'll become working with the recipes.

Good health!

As an addendum to this review, it is now May 10 and I began eating as suggested by this book on January 21. When I began this way of eating, my blood sugar was 7.8 and my doctor wanted to start me on insulin...which I was VERY opposed to. I had my quarterly blood test on May 6th and my blood sugar is 6! NORMAL. I can think of no better recommendation for eating as recommended in this book. AND, although I stick to it about 99% I do use olive oil when I want to, I eat grilled shrimp on a caesar salad smothered in grated cheese occasionally. I love salsa and chips and have them once or twice a week so, it doesn't have to be so radical you won't stick with it. Tailor it to your life style and see what works and doesn't work for you. No one will stick to any diet that is so rigid they can't live normally.

Good health!

Dr. Fuhrman Saved My Life
By Michael Goldsmith
I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes and put on Metformin on June 26th, 2013. I started the ADA diet and followed it 100% for a few weeks and could not get my blood sugar to go below 140. Finally i began to panic and called my doctor, he told me to get used to it. He said I would be on metformin my whole life and eventually insulin. At that point i knew something wasn't right and began to do a lot of research. On July 13th I went to the book store and found this book after looking at 10 or so others. I read the book from end to end that night because everything Dr. Fuhrman was saying made absolute sense. I started the diet that day and the next morning my blood sugar was down to 100, the next day was in the 90's and now i have a fasting blood sugar between Mid 70's and the 80's. My doctor took me off the metformin after just one week of being on this lifestyle change. I have lost over 30 pounds in a month. I now work out twice a day and still have tons of energy. I have lost 6+ inches around my waist and I am off my high blood pressure medication too. I have about 20 more pounds to go till my body finds its ideal weight. The great news is, this is a lifestyle I can live with, it makes sense and it works. God Bless Dr. Fuhrman. I wish the ADA would stop enabling consumers and tell them the truth. You can get off the drugs, you can help yourself, but you have to have a correct lifestyle and diet. No more processed foods.

She ate a full filet of salmon with two cobs of corn and a full cup of great northern beans with onions and garlic
By Randy R. Henke
I hardly ever write reviews but I feel compelled to share my wife, Robyn's, experience after five weeks on Dr. Fuhrman's diet. At 190 pounds and 5' 8", she was about 50 pounds overweight. She had been on Glipizide for diabetes, Atenolol and Lisinopril for high blood pressure, and Gemfibrozil for high triglycerides. Her last A1C was 9.5; well in the danger zone for diabetics. Most of her fasting blood glucose readings were above 200.

After the initial five weeks, she is off all of those medications. Her last blood pressure reading was 117/78. Her fasting glucose hovers around 90-100. She has already lost 15 pounds as well.

Tonight, we decided to have a cheat meal. She ate a full filet of salmon with two cobs of corn and a full cup of great northern beans with onions and garlic. This is a meal with nearly 100 carbs that should have sent her blood glucose soaring. Two hours after this meal her blood glucose was 97! We didn't believe that was possible so we measured it a second time and it was 94.

Needless to say, tomorrow we will be back on this diet permanently with only an infrequent special occasion to interrupt it. The food is satisfying and the results are phenomenal!

If you suffer from type 2 diabetes but are willing to dedicate yourself to this diet, make no mistake, it will reverse your disease and give you a great chance at a long, complication-free life.

Thank you, Dr. Fuhrman!

8-17-2016 UPDATE

New test results from recent blood work:

Triglycerides six week ago - 259. Now 110
Total cholesterol six weeks ago - 193. Now 173.
A1C six weeks ago - 8.9. Now 7.3. (Since A1C is a three month average that 7.3 is taking into account the prior two months of pre-diet eating. When adjusted for that, it actually would be an A1C for the last month of around 5.0.)
Blood pressure: 118 over 72.

All without medication and only four weeks on the diet!
