Enochian Magic and the Higher Worlds: Beyond the Realm of the Angels, by John DeSalvo Ph.D.

A step-by-step guide to the rituals of Enochian magic for reaching the higher spiritual realms

• Reveals missing practical instructions for the Enochian magic system received by John Dee and Edward Kelley

• Explains that the angelic realm is only the first and farthest away of the spiritual realms surrounding God

• Shows how to connect with the higher worlds beyond the angels to tap more fully in to the magical power of the Divine

In this comprehensive introduction to Enochian magic and beyond, John DeSalvo explains how the magic system transmitted by the angels to John Dee and Edward Kelley in the 16th century has until now remained incomplete and thus not as powerful as the angels intended.

Drawing on his in-depth study of John Dee’s diaries, DeSalvo explains how Dee and Kelley were given the Enochian tables and calls but their communications with the angels were severed before they received the full practical instructions for Enochian magic. To this day, most magical groups improvise and make up rituals based on their own ideas and imagination--the magic they practice is not true angelic magic.

After many successful Enochian magic rituals and years of his own spiritual work, DeSalvo has discovered additional key pieces to the magical system of Dee and Kelley, a system now known as Power Magic. He provides step-by-step instructions for more complete and accurate Enochian magic rituals and reveals how the angelic realm is only the first and farthest away of the spiritual realms surrounding God. He explains how to penetrate this angelic realm with Power Magic to reach higher spiritual worlds and receive more powerful knowledge and energy. He shows that by connecting with the higher worlds beyond the angels, we can tap more fully in to the magical power of the Divine and begin restoring the planetary magic of our most ancient ancestors.

Review
“John DeSalvo’s (Decoding the Enochian Secrets) is truly a significant contribution to our understanding of Dee and Kelley’s amazing experiences.” (Lon Milo DuQuette, author of Enochian Vision Magick)

“Dr. John Dee played a major role in world history. The highly influential ‘Enochian’ system of magic originated in his mystical experiments. Yet the centerpiece of his system has never before been published--a book that Dee clearly regarded as a monumental gift from God to humanity, communicated through his angels. Decoding the Enochian Secrets is definitely recommended.” (Joseph Peterson, author of John Dee’s Five Books of Mystery)

“John DeSalvo is one of the few minds on the planet that can comprehend a language of secrecy and reveal new meaning not apparent in normal language. (In The Seeress of Prevorst) his work on the language structure used represents a benchmark in Western esotericism.” (J. J. Hurtak, Ph.D., author of The Book of Knowledge: The Keys of Enoch)

"This step-by-step guide to the rituals of Enochian magic for reaching the higher spiritual realms reveals the missing practical instructions for the Enochian system received by John Dee and Edward Kelley. DeSalvo explains that the angelic realm is only the first and farthest away of the spiritual realms surrounding God and shows how to connect with the higher worlds beyond the angels to tap more fully into the magical power of the Divine." 8 The Technique of Power Magic

I had a pivotal experience last year when, as I was doing the Enochian Meditation and experiencing the silence and tranquillity that the meditation bestowed on me, I felt the presence of God. This state didn’t last long, but while it did I received a spiritual message: I was told that sometime during the following week I would be given special information.

Toward morning I got the message. It was simple. I was told that I could ascend to the highest realm where God was by using just one word, and I was told to use the name of God as this one word. This would enable me to go up to the place of profound silence where I would be before the Throne of God. This sounded good to me, but what word for God would I use?

People all over the world have different concepts of God and a different word for Him, such as God, Yahweh, Lord, or Allah. Given this, I thought maybe I would just use the word “God,” or a word that would bring the thought or idea of God into my mind. But that didn’t feel right either; it wasn’t a simple and elegant solution. That’s when it struck me like a lightning bolt--I needed to use the Enochian word for God, or the word the angels used for God when they communicated with Dee.

To figure out what the Enochian word for God is, I went through Dee’s diaries again to see what I might have missed. What I found was this: On Tuesday, April 10, 1584, when Dee and Kelley were in Cracow, Poland, they had another angelic communication, wherein the angel Nalvage gave the two men a tablet. On it was written the names of groups of angels and some short descriptions of them, which we’re not concerned with here. What we are concerned with here was something else written on the tablet in its four corners: IAD--the name of God.

Given that the angels deemed IAD to be the name of God, given that it’s a three-letter word (this is significant because the names of the Aethyrs are likewise composed of three letters, so they have the same structure), and given that the tablet was given to Kelley and Dee just prior to their receipt of the Enochian Calls by the angels, it would appear that this is the word for which I was searching.

The angel Nalvage did not name the tablet, which, down through the ages has been referred to as the Tablet of God or the Table of Nalvage. Nor did Nalvage provide instructions for its use or address its true function. I have my own theory about the tablet’s real function: I believe it’s the key to facilitating the Enochian Calls. What’s interesting to me is that the tablet was given to Dee and Kelley on April 10, 1584, and the first Call began three days later, on April 13, 1584, which to me implies there may be some relationship between the tablet and the Calls, or that they were meant to be used together. I believe the last statement Nalvage made about the tablet before he disappeared shows that my idea may not be off base. “Thy name be blessed, O God, which canst open a means, whereby thy powers immediately may be opened unto man. Power, glory, and honour, be unto thee, for thou art the true body of all things, and art life eternal.”

Kelley then says (in Latin): “Now he is suddenly vanished away with the Table. Amen.”

Thus ends the communication with the angel Nalvage regarding the Tablet of God. The last sentence from Nalvage is so important because to my mind it gives a clue to the tablet’s entire raison d’être. It’s clear to me that Nalvage is hinting to Dee and Kelley that the name of God can open realms and powers immediately after reading the Calls and not subsequent to a long process of spiritual search and discipline. The name of God is the means by which one can access this higher realm of God and His powers.

To access the realm, first perform the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and then read the Enochian Call. Then read the last name, IAD, slowly. This has the effect of moving you up from Earth at the center, through thirty concentric bubbles or spheres, popping each one as you go. You’re not stopping to look around or contact the angels, like you do in traditional Enochian Magic, but you’re moving upward through all these Aethyrs like a dart, piercing each one as you pass through it.

Once this has been done, you’re above the Aethyrs, above the angels. Don’t try to penetrate the Zero Aethyr or the God Aethyr, as it’s not in your power to do so. In a sense this is where magic and mysticism come together. You’ve gotten past all of the Aethyrs by your own will and initiative, in what has been an active spiritual process. You made the decision and carried things out. You are in front of the Zero Aethyr, you pronounce the name IAD, and then you patiently wait in this silent space for God to call you up.

Waste of money
By A reviewer from New York
If you are seeking practical instruction in Enochian, this is not the book. The book is comprised mostly of the authors long winded speculations (John Dee had access to an as yet undiscovered manuscript by Enoch) his being the reincarnation of John Dee (John Dee, John DeSalvo, get it? the angels told him this) and he's the "third Enoch" (angels told him this too). Throw in aura's, ufo's and crystal skulls and you get the idea. Don't waste your money. I returned my copy. There are many good books on Enochian. "Enochian Magic and the Higher Worlds: Beyond..." is not one of them.

Very interesting and good book
By Oscar A. Rangel
This is a different book, it is mostly for the debating mind, and practical for the ones that take action, it has very good points on views about many things on the subject of god, and our evolution, and most important the Magician Mystic path with I feel it is the correct one too, I gave him 4 stars because I think it is not about enochian magic, persay, but a different approach to contact god, with another table given to DEE.
And this is where I got lost... he goes into explaining the string theory and the multidimensional particles that in existence (hope I got it right) about how this fabric of string (the all) permeates all, and this is GOD, but at the same time he goes into explaining how using a different table given to Dee we can find God... but how can we find something that we are... it is just the personality the one that separates us from it, maybe the author can clarify this point which I got lost...

Unabridged reissue of a scarce (and fun) Stoker title
By James D. Jenkins
I am with the publisher and am writing to note that contrary to the way Amazon is advertising this book as of 8/20/12, it is NOT an abridged edition. This volume contains the complete, unabridged text of the novel, taken from the scarce 1909 first edition and includes a new introduction, annotations, and supplemental materials.

And, by the way, like nearly everything else Stoker wrote, including "The Snake's Pass" (1890), "The Mystery of the Sea," (1902), and of course "Dracula" (1897), this is a really fun and fast read with some very memorable parts. If you enjoyed Stoker's other books, you're sure to like this one.

“The Very Land of Moonlight”
By Eclectic Reader
As long as there are readers of fiction and people who enjoy a thrill of the supernatural or “things that go bump in the night,” the name of Bram Stoker (1847-1912) is likely to be as immortal as his most famous creation, Count Dracula. It is just as likely that history will continue to view Stoker as a “one work wonder” even though he wrote and published a dozen novels and novellas, a number of short stories, and some non-fiction work.

The Lady of the Shroud (1909) is one of Stoker’s last works and its claim to fame is that in it he appears to be reverting to his successful supernatural, vampiric roots. Such really isn’t the case, however. There are some similarities to The Lady of the Shroud and Stoker’s earlier masterpiece. Both stories are told through a similar narrative structure—a series of letters and journal entries of various characters as well as through pseudo documents and news articles. Both have allusions to the undead. The beginning of The Lady of the Shroud opens with an excerpt from an “article” from the Journal of Occultism which includes a ghostly, vampire-like image of a woman who mysteriously appears to a crew at sea near the coastline only to then disappear.

The tone of the novel being established, The Lady of the Shroud then takes a drastic turn in a series of letters having to do with an incredible inheritance with some very unique conditions. Rupert Sent Leger is to inherit from his uncle Roger Melton “a fortune which has no equal in amount in Europe, even... amongst crowned heads.” In order to win the inheritance, however, Rupert must agree to “reside for a period of at least six months to begin not later than three months from the reading” of the will “in the Castle of Vissarion in the Land of the Blue Mountains” and in order to win the entire estate must “continue to reside there in part for a period of one year.” The letters setting the stage for future events in The Lady of the Shroud are slow reading and somewhat cumbersomely done although Stoker shows a flair for satire as he comically brings to life the elitism of the Melton family and their immense dislike of poor relations.

As he does in Dracula (with the otherwise minor character of Quincey Morris), Stoker creates a protagonist, Rupert Sent Leger, that is the ideal of heroism and masculinity (and with a physique similar to Stoker’s own).

Roger Melton is sure of his nephew’s future (especially given his inheritance) and states in a posthumous letter to his nephew that the battle-torn area of unrest, “the Blue Mountains” is Rupert’s “ground” upon which the young man will be able to prove himself.

It isn’t until Rupert journeys to Vissarion in Book II of The Lady of the Shroud that Stoker truly introduces his reader to the gothic aspects of his novel. Much like the homeland of Count Dracula, Vissarion is filled with beautiful yet rugged landscapes. The inhabitants of the area, Rupert declares, “are in reality the most primitive people I ever met—the most fixed to their own ideas, which belong to centuries back...” The people are “so proud, so haughty, so reserved, so distant, so absolutely fearless, so honourable, so hospitable.” It is also in Vissarion that Rupert first learns of the inexplicable mystery of the “dead woman floating in a coffin” from one of the eye-witnesses. Rupert writes to his Scottish Highlander Aunt Janet (who is going to join him at the castle) “that our new home is not without superstitious interests of its own. It is rather a nice idea, is it not, to have a dead woman cruising round our promontory in a coffin?” The castle (a typical Gothic archetype) Rupert inherits from his uncle is “so vast” that Rupert “can’t describe it in detail… the belief that this place is haunted, [is] conveyed in a thousand ways of speech and inference.” And then he meets “a ghost or spiritual manifestation of some kind which moved in [a] silent way”... the Lady in the Shroud.

Told as it is in the form of diary entries, letters, and diverse documents, the story of The Lady of the Shroud gets narrated by various voices and perspectives. This narrative format has events unravel slowly. Stoker is at his narrative best when he maintains longer diary or letter entries, allowing a single character to maintain the story-line for a period of time, a device he employs more once he has Rupert established in Vissarion. It is at this point, too, that the narrative begins to build momentum as Rupert becomes convinced that his ghostly visitor, for a variety of reasons (the least of which not being his life-long indoctrination into the occult from being told stories by his Aunt Janet) is a vampire— “one of that horrid race that survives death and carries on a life-in-death existence eternally and only for evil.” Complicating matters, Rupert has fallen in love with the Lady in the Shroud at nearly first sight—without even knowing her name.

Running parallel with the story of Rupert and the Lady in the Shroud (along with Aunt Janet’s distressing and ghastly “veesions” of death and disaster for her nephew) is the story of the “troubled and restless” mountaineers who fear invasion of their homeland by neighboring Turks. Thus, nights Rupert reserves for the Lady because “the night is her time of freedom” while the “days have been full of national movement” with “the mountaineers... evidently organizing themselves.”

Two-thirds of the way through The Lady of the Shroud Stoker spills the beans and the truth about who the Lady is (as well as what she is and the reason for her vampire-like behavior). At this point, Stoker’s novel takes a dramatic turn and becomes a story that resembles something much more from the pen of Jules Verne or H. G. Wells than from the noted creator of one of gothic horror’s greatest nightmares, Count Dracula. Fantastic, futuristic areoplanes and warships come into play as does nation building, allowing the “splendid land” of the fictitious Blue Mountains and its “freedom-loving people [to] flourish and become a power in [the] world.” Ironically, Stoker was writing this at a time when Europe was on the verge of catastrophe—World War I—and the story takes place in 1907-1908. Still, The Lady of the Shroud has an almost fairy-tale, story-book ending.

Undoubtedly, Stoker’s finest and most characteristic writing comes in the middle third of The Lady of the Shroud. During many portions of Rupert’s diary, Stoker evokes some of the same fear and imagery that readers are familiar with from Jonathan Harker’s journal in Dracula as he comes to realize the horrors that lurk for him in the Count’s castle as well as the hideous monster that is his host. In both works Stoker floods the reader with riveting, sensuous details that vividly bring the eerie setting to life. The last third of The Lady of the Shroud suffers in comparison to the middle section. The unbelievable mixture of near-primitive means of communication and hand-held weapons as compared to the almost science-fiction like elements of the plot create a difficult juxtaposition. Another small, but irksome curiosity is Aunt Janet’s Scottish accent. It is reproduced verbatim in Rupert’s journal (at times almost to the extent that the passages need translating), but when readers are treated to pages from Aunt Janet’s own diaries, her language is pretty much the same as everyone else’s whose “writing” appears in the novel with only an occasional run of dialect that comes and goes.

Less successful than Dracula, The Lady of the Shroud remains an intriguing tale and valuable to those who wish there was more of the master’s novel-length horror fiction to read. Curiously, The Lady of the Shroud has often been printed in edited versions. Valancourt Books presents the original unabridged text, with a new introduction by Sarah E. Maier, annotations, the text of contemporary reviews, a chronology of Bram Stoker's life and works, a bibliography, and Stoker's important 1908 article "The Censorship of Fiction."

It's not Dracula.
By Serena
If you are looking for another stunning book like Dracula by Bram Stoker...don't look over here. This book was, in short, a trudge. It does have some redeeming quality---it maintains the same creepy, gothic tone found in Dracula, and the plot is pleasantly surprising with many twists and turn: altogether it's wonderfully original, however...

The actual writing is boring. The narrating characters are not very likeable, and there is just a lot of unnecessary fluff and repetition. The plot is grossly over stretched and sometimes confusing as it dwells on irrelevant moments and flies over major plot points. It takes a long time to read. I can see why this book stayed out of print so long...

Comanche Moon (Lonesome Dove Story, Book 2), by Larry McMurtry

The epic four-volume cycle that began with Larry McMurty's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, Lonesome Dove, is completed with this brilliant and haunting novel - a capstone in a mighty tradition of storytelling.

Texas Rangers August McCrae and Woodrow F. Call, now in their middle years, are just beginning to deal with the enigmas of the adult heart - Gus with his great love, Clara Forsythe; and Call with Maggie Tilton, the young whore who loves him. Two proud but very different men, they enlist with a Ranger troop in pursuit of Buffalo Hump, the great Comanche war chief; Kicking Wolf, the celebrated Comanche horse thief; and a deadly Mexican bandit king with a penchant for torture.

Comanche Moon joins the twenty-year time line between Dead Man's Walk and Lonesome Dove, following beloved heroes Gus and Call and their comrades-in-arms - Deets, Jake Spoon, and Pea Eye Parker - in their bitter struggle to protect an advancing Western frontier against the defiant Comanches, courageously determined to defend their territory and their way of life.

At once vividly imagined and unflinchingly realistic, Comanche Moon is a sweeping, heroic adventure full of tragedy, cruelty, courage, honor and betrayal - and the culmination of Larry McMurty's peerless vision of the American West.

Amazon.com Review
In a book that serves as a both a sequel to Dead Man's Walk and a prequel to the beloved Lonesome Dove, McMurtry fills in the missing chapters in the Call and McCrae saga. It is a fantastic read, in many ways the best and gutsiest of the series. We join the Texas Rangers in their waning Indian-fighting years. The Comanches, after one last desperate raid led by the fearsome-but-aging Buffalo Hump, are almost defeated, though Buffalo Hump's son, Blue Duck, still terrorizes the relentless flow of settlers and lawmen. As Augustus and Woodrow follow one-eyed, tobacco-spitting Captain Inish Scull deep into a murderous madman's den in Mexico, their thoughts turn toward the end of their careers and the women they love in remarkably different ways back in Austin. What's amazing about McMurtry's West is that he sees beyond the romance. Neither his Indians, his cowboys, his gunslingers, nor his women act the way they did in either Zane Grey novels or John Wayne movies. Incredible beauty and lightning-quick violence are the bookends of his West, but it is the in-between moments of suffering and boredom where McMurtry shines. The suffering is poignant and heart-rending; the boredom tempered with doses of Augustus McCrae's sharp humor. Don't be surprised if you find yourself crying and laughing on the same page.

From Library Journal
This prequel to the classic Lonesome Dove (LJ 7/85) follows Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae through their years as Texas Rangers as they create legends for themselves fighting the Comanche to open west Texas for settlement. For 15 years, the Rangers play cat-and-mouse games with Buffalo Hump, Kicking Wolf, and other chiefs as they pursue, attack, and retaliate their way through the Comanche wars. Ironically, Blue Duck, Gus McCrae's nemesis in Lonesome Dove, is Buffalo Hump's son, carrying on the tradition started by his father, even though father and son hated one another. Considered together, Dead Man's Walk (LJ 4/15/95), Comanche Moon, and Lonesome Dove create a monumental work that has few equals in current literature. Essential for all libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
McMurtry returns to reliable form in this follow-up to Dead Man's Walk (1995) that serves as a second prequel to his Texas epic Lonesome Dove (1985). As the great Comanche warrior Buffalo Hump slowly succumbs to weakness and old age, a younger generation both of Texans and Comanches rises to power. Buffalo Hump's son, Blue Duck, breaks away from his father to form a band of renegades who prefer the Texans' guns to the bow and arrow and their own whims to traditional ways. Events are set in motion by the theft of a great warhorse belonging to Harvard-educated adventurer and Texas ranger, Captain Inish Scull. The thief, a Comanche, resolves to undertake a mad display of heroism by presenting the animal to the Mexican warlord Ahumado (the ``Black Vaquero'') renowned for the creative methods of torture he visits on anyone foolish enough to cross him. Captain Scull, unhinged by the incident, sets off in pursuit and falls into Ahumado's hands. A brutal Comanche raid on Austin at the same time spurs the rise of two tough, bright, experienced young rangers: affable, whiskey- and whore-obsessed Augustus McCrae, who's nevertheless steadfast in his devotion to Clara Forsythe, an independent-minded shopkeeper who breaks his heart by marrying a more stable man; and dour, sensible, lethal Woodrow Call, who can't quite bring himself to acknowledge his illegitimate son or marry the sweet-natured prostitute with whom he has a longstanding relationship. The two battle-hardened friends sort out their troubles with women, tangle with the Comanches and Ahumado, and quietly become (reluctant) legends on the frontier. While the last third turns workmanlike in its efforts to set up the opening situation of Lonesome Dove, McMurtry nevertheless delivers a generally fine tableau of western life, full of imaginative exploits, convincing historical background, and characters who are alive. A worthy prequel to the classic Lonesome Dove
By Bruce Trinque
"Comanche Moon" is described as the final volume of the "Lonesome Dove" saga although chronologically it is the second of the four novels, taking place between "Dead Man's Walk" and "Lonesome Dove". Readers of the other volumes in series will encounter familiar names here: Woodrow Call and Gus McCrae, of course, but also Jake Spoon and Pea Eye Parker and Deets of "Dove", Long Bill Coleman and Buffalo Hump of "Walk", Famous Shoes and Charlie Goodnight of "Streets of Laredo" and others. As has become increasingly evident in his novels, McMurtry is not concerned with presenting a story of the West correct in all the minor historical details. For example, in "Comanche Moon" we find one character armed with a Winchester rifle 10 years before that weapon's introduction. Instead, his aim appears to be to create a story of about four parts gritty realism and one part romantic myth - and in "Comanche Moon" he achieves success. The novel abounds with characters more extravagant, larger-than-life personalities, yet these people are true to the story McMurtry is telling. Captain Inish Scull of the Texas Rangers and his wife, Inez, and the "Black Vaquero" Ahumado are unlikely to have had close real-life models, but in "Comanche Moon" they are forceful, fascinating figures. As is usual, McMurtry's characters are driven by their own obsessions. If I might sum up the theme of this novel, and much else of McMurtry's fiction, I would say that it would be "times change, people don't" - and not just "people" in the larger sense, but people as individuals, holding true to their own particular, narrow view of how they should live their lives. Characters like Woodrow Call and Inish Scull and Buffalo Hump are admirable because of their great integrity, no matter what destruction they seed while pursuing their individual visions of what is right. In "Comanche Moon", McMurtry's Indian characters - the Comanche Buffalo Hump and Kicking Wolf and the Kickapoo Famous Shoes - are perhaps more finely drawn than in any of the other Lonesome Dove books. They are not merely white men wearing paint and feathers. They live and die by their own logic, as alien as that system of belief may seem to a late Twentieth Century reader. Although any judgment must be subjective, I would rate "Comanche Moon" as at least the equal of "Streets of Laredo" and better than "Dead Man's Walk", although not so high as the magnificent "Lonesome Dove". I know that part of my enjoyment of the novel is my familiarity with several of the major characters, and my advice to any reader new to the "Lonesome Dove" saga would be to read the books in their order of publication rather than their chronological order of internal dates.

Once again, McMurtry diverts, distorts and delights.
By Mieskie@mindspring.com
How can one man write four books about the same characters with no concern for continuity? I don't know, but I am equally clueless as to how he can dispense with continuity, alter events, change characters' histories and personalities and still make me love the work. As he did in Streets of Laraedo and Dead Man's Walk, McMurty changes certain elements of his well established characters' pasts. The changes are most glaring in this book, the immeadiate precursor to his magnificent Lonesome Dove. However, as poorly as his four Gus and Call books fit together, they stand alone very well. In Comanche Moon, McMurtry leads us from Gus and Call in their late twenties to their mid fourties. It appears to end roughly 5 or so years prior to Lonesome Dove. Many will be surprised and delighted to find that the relationship between Call and Maggie, mother of Call's son Newt, is well defined and much more significant than was alluded to in Dove. Another detail that completely reverses itself from Dove is that of the life of Jake Spoon. Far from a romantic rival with Gus for the heart of Clara Allen, Jake is a dippy young moron, afraid of any action, desperate to end his days as a Ranger alive. But much of the action here centers on a new character, Capt. Skull, the rangering Ranger captain who gives Gus and Call their first command by abandoning them and the Ranger troop in order to learn how to track by walking off with Famous Shoes. Skull is a classic McMurtry eccentric, and the only person whom really provides any suspense, as only the future of his life is unknown to us. Skull is witty and full of vim and vinegar. His battles, both mental and physical, are among the most engaging portions of the story. And the most revolting.
Certainly, the way McMurty takes liberties with characters that many love is often maddening, but when seperated from the other books, Comanche Moon stands on its own well. It is another gripping and unflinching look at an unromanticized American West, and it continues the! excellent development of the Indian characters McMurtry began in Dead Man's Walk. Buffalo Hump, Kicking Wolf and Blue Duck are fleshed out in a manner that is not often seen with Indians in most Western novels. Far from ciphers, they are realistic characters that cause you to see that Ranger-Indian fights are not as simple as Good vs. Evil. They are, rather, Man vs. Man, and Culture vs. Culture, and they are all the more heartbreaking because of it.
I don't know if McMurtry is getting lazy. I don't know if he simply doesn't give a damn about whether or not readers care. In the end, it really doesn't matter as he still can deliver page turners with the best of them. And by the the time you finish Comanche Moon, you realize that the changes in Gus and Call's history, changes that can make rereading Lonesome Dove jarring, are for the best. This is how he should have set up their pasts in Dove. It a richer, more poignant past for Gus and Call than what was alluded to in that Pulitzer Prize winning novel.
Finally, the audio presentation is top notch. Of course, how could it not be with the peerless Frank Muller as narrator?

Comanch Moon has a compelling story but continuity problems
By ChloeDoc24*7
Lonesome Dove, a masterpiece, deserved the Pulitzer Prize but the prequels and sequel have been disappointments. Comanch Moon is actually one of the better books of the series but there are some inconsistencies in continuity that make me think McMurtry forgot what he wrote before or perhaps he got someone else to wtite these less than stellar books. For instance the histories of Clara and Maggie the women who loved the main protaganists do not match up with the Lonesome Dove descriptions. Clara never returns to Austin TX to runs her parents' store as in LD after a terrible Indian attack in which her parents perish. She marries a dumb horse trader from Kentucky and leaves Texas forever leaving the store to languish in CM. Maggie, Call's ever suffering prostitute lover never makes it to Lonesome Dove to languish and die as an alcoholic as she does in the first book. Instead she dies of consumption 6 years after cleaning up her life and having Newt in Austin Tx in CM. Neither does the past marital history of Augustus ring true. Did he marry two fat women and become widowed after less than one year each or was 7 years his longest marriage?

Are they piddly details in an otherwise compelling story? Perhaps. But it is certainly annoyingly disappointing to encounter these simple continuity mistakes. Why make such mistakes in your own books? The changes wouldn't improve the story but only make one suspicious.

I think Margaret Mitchell had it right to not try to inflict on the public a sequel to Gone with the Wind. No one could ever top it. Look at the romance novel sequel that followed 50 years later written by another author and a different writing style. Take my advice. Read Lonesome Dove and enjoy but I wouldn't think it necessary to read the other books in the series.

"It's not what you think that will impact your child; it's what you communicate". We live in an age of delinquency, teen suicide, youth gangs, drugs and alcohol, sexual temptations, televised immortality, overcrowded schools, and a general deterioration in the civility and morality of the general culture. In How To Keep Your Kids On Your Team Charles Stanley passes along the wisdom gained as a father of two grown children, a son and a daughter, in this plainspoken book about creating and maintaining loving, loyal parent-child relationships. Stanley focuses on the parental role as one of stewardship rather than ownership. As a parent, you have a stewardship entrusted to you, and you are responsible to God for your actions toward your children. The next step is to teach your children that they too have a responsibility. "The Key to successful parenting," says Stanley, "is one's ability to ingrain a sense of personal accountability to God into the mind of the child at an early age. " Enriched by personal anecdotes and insightful commentary, How To Keep Your Kids On Your Team is a book for all parents who want to assure that their sons and daughters avoid a self-centered life and hold fast to tested values. How To Keep Your Kids On Your Team is highly recommended for all parish and church libraries and is "must" reading for parents and care-givers of children at any age. How To Keep Your Kids On Your Team is a valuable contribution to school and community library parenting reference books, and belongs on the reading list of all parenting courses and curriculums. -- Midwest Book Review

A Friend of Silence (A Roger and Bess Mystery Book 1), by M. Lee Prescott

What safer haven could there be than a Quaker boarding school in a tiny New England coastal village? What secrets lie beneath its serene and quiet beauty?

Out of the blue, the campus is laid open, the peace of Old Harbor Friends shattered by the murder of lascivious, comptroller, Milt Wickie. Wickie is discovered in his office, a scrimshaw knife protruding from his chest, a knife belonging to beloved teacher and grieving widow, Bess Dore.

Initially a suspect, the forty-two year old, Bess is soon exonerated and jumps headlong into a murder investigation along with old flame, police detective, Roger Demaris, and Harry Winthrop, an amateur sleuth, prolific writer, and the son of the school’s wealthiest patron.

Will Bess find romance along the way, giving her heart to the gruff police officer, who still adores her, or to the fly-by-night, but charming Harry who is clearly smitten? Will the killer strike again? Will the silence and calm of the 200-year old Friends school ever again be restored?

Good Storyline
By lynn4591
Overall, a good story line that kept me interested throughout. However, other than an initial reference to a long ago event (no spoilers here) in the beginning of the book, the content was written in present day tense and the conflicting use of British and American slang from multiple eras was a distraction and made reading the book less enjoyable. There were also a lot of what I call "thesaurtic words" (my own coined phrase) meaning the book reads as if someone looked up adjectives in a thesaurus and plugged in high end words throughout the content. Maybe doing so raised the reading level score, but it was not needed and detracted from the story.

An engaging mystery...
By Carol M. Hutchens
A Friend of Silence is a mystery set on the campus of a Quaker school. But don't be fooled by the setting. The worldly life of the faculty and students keeps this story moving. Murder and mayhem come to mind. No guessing the ending of this mystery. Lee Prescott created a great story with well developed characters and a fast pace that will keep you entertained. Well done, Ms. Prescott!

An enjoyable suspense/mystery.
By Cheryl G.
Didn't think at first I was going to enjoy this book - the locale is New England but seemed to be written by a British author and that was distracting. After I got a ways into the book though and put that issue out of my mind I really enjoyed the characters and the plot. It kept me guessing and I didn't suspect the ending, missed the clues. Unlike many ebooks I've read there were not a lot of editing errors, a real plus in my book. Overall a very good enjoyable read.

Live Bait (Monkeewrench Series), by P. J. Tracy

Minneapolis detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth are bored―ever since they solved the Monkeewrench case, the Twin Cities have been in a murder-free dry spell, as people no longer seem interested in killing one another. But when elderly Morey Gilbert is found dead in the plant nursery he runs with his wife, Lily, the crime drought ends―not with a trickle, but with a torrent. Who would kill Morey, a man without an enemy, a man who might as well have been a saint? His tiny, cranky little wife is no help, and may even be a suspect; his estranged son, Jack, an infamous ambulance-chasing lawyer, has his own enemies; and his son-in-law, former cop Marty Pullman, is so depressed over his wife's death a year earlier he's ready to kill himself, but not Morey. The number of victims―all elderly―grows, and the city is fearful once again. Can Grace McBride's cold case-solving software program somehow find the missing link?

From Publishers Weekly
The mother-daughter mystery writing team known as P.J. Tracy produces another winner with this follow-up to 2003's lively Monkeewrench. After several homicide-free months in their hometown of St. Paul, wisecracking police detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth are back in action when elderlyâ€"and much belovedâ€"gardener Morey Gilbert is found face up near his greenhouse with a bullet hole in his head. At first, the prime murder suspects are family members: Gilbert's estranged son, Jack, a slick personal injury lawyer, and Gilbert's dry-eyed widow, Lily, who discovered the corpseâ€"and moved it before the police arrived. When three more slayings follow, Magozzi and Rolseth discern disturbing common threads: each of the victims is over 80 andâ€"except for Arlen Fisher, shot in the arm and dragged onto the train tracks to face his doomâ€"Jewish survivors of Nazi concentration camps. Critical clues, including a gun traced to murders around the globe, surface as straitlaced detectives Aaron Langer and Johnny McLaren join the more offbeat Magozzi and Rolseth on the case. Tracy serves up punchy prose and quirky characters, from a sartorially challenged police chief to a plump, shrewd crime tech named Grimm. Romance for bachelor Magozzi arrives in the form of Grace MacBride, a comely computer whiz whose sophisticated software program, FLEE, has helped crack countless cases. The courtship moves slowly despite undeniable sparks; MacBride is still haunted by Monkeewrenchâ€"the deadly case that first brought the two together and continues to hover like a cloud of doom. With her stash of high-tech research tools, including special face recognition software, MacBride delivers revelations about both victims and perpetrator, leading Magozzi and Rolseth toward the case's spine-chilling resolution. With generous doses of humor and suspense, this sharp, satisfying thriller will rivet readers from the start.

From Booklist
Forget Florida. Lose L.A. It's Minnesota that's heating up contemporary mysteries. Think William Kent Krueger and John Sandford, both of whom move their novels easily between the Twin Cities and the wild country to the north.

Two more Minnesota crime writers, each with their second novels coming out, prove the cold front is no fluke. In Live Bait, the mother-daughter writing team that goes by the name P. J. Tracy concocts a police procedural that can be cherished for its dead-on cop humor and cop banter, as much as for the intricate plot. "Homicide is dead," laments a Minneapolis homicide detective: no bodies on the ground for months, only cold cases to keep the homicide guys busy. And then, a boon for Minneapolis detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth--two possible murders in one spring day. Both of the deceased are in their 80s; both live near each other. The cases are satisfyingly tricky. In the first, there is no crime scene, since the nongrieving widow dragged her husband from the outdoors into a greenhouse. In the second, there is a scene but no body--until one turns up tied to the railroad tracks. If a police procedural can be both disturbing and fun-filled, this is it. Connie Fletcher

Another winner from P.J. Tracy
By Colleen McMahon
After leaving Tracy's debut novel, Monkeewrench, sitting in my to-be-read pile for over a year (accumulating the next two books in the series in the meantime, before I've read any of them), I finally picked it up and read it last week. I loved it so much that I moved on to the next two books in the series as soon as I finished the first!

Live Bait opens with a mystery as intriguing as the serial killer in Monkeewrench. This time the bodies belong to elderly people in Minneapolis, living quiet lives and as far as anyone can tell, well-loved by those around them. The one thing they have in common is that they are Jewish concentration camp survivors. All have been shot. There's also the odd murder in the mix--an equally elderly man who was not a camp survivor, killed not by gunfire but by being tied to a railroad track with wire and essentially frightened into a heart attack by the train bearing down on him.

The detective team of Magozzi and Rolseth take the center stage in this book, and we also get to know the rest of their squad a little better as the story unfolds. The Monkeewrench gang of programmers reappears but aren't as prominent in this story as the first, but their appearances in the plot are always memorable. Magozzi and Rolseth are both achingly human as they struggle with their own changing emotions toward the victims and their suspects, including the victims' seemingly blameless family members. As the plot moves along rapidly more and more secrets are revealed. I again enjoyed the "double twist"--more of a triple twist--in the final revelations in the story--I could partially anticipate "who dunnit" but not completely.

I like the way that Tracy takes a storyline that seems wildly outlandish (and it is) and grounds it in characters who are so well developed that it all becomes terribly believable. And once again, I finished the book and dove headlong into the next one in order to spend more time with characters I'm becoming very attached to!

Highly recommended, and make sure you read this series in order--check out Monkeewrench before you read Live Bait!

Just a little disappointing.
By Karen Kirsch
While I would have liked to see the original gang of four from
Monkeewrench more prominantly involved, this book held my interest. Two deaths of elderly people, one gruesome and one seemingly normal, have Magozzi and Rolseth perplexed. When Grace
McBride uses the Monkeewrench computer program, a pattern begins to form...the Holocaust. The premise is quite unbelievable, but I have to admit to shedding a few tears by the end. I'm looking forward to something a bit better from mother/daughter on their next jaunt. More computer geekishness please. However, I do enjoy the Magozzi/McBride relationship.

Highly entertaining!
By A Customer
I began this book without having read the first one, "Monkeewrench." There were times when explanations hinted at previous events, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the action in this one. The dialogue between the cops was so entertaining! Was it real? I haven't a clue because I've never met a real homicide cop. Does it matter? Not a bit; this is fiction, after all! Having lived through WWII, I found the subject matter still pertinent, still interesting, still emotionally touching. The authors wrote of believable people to me, each a blend of some good, some bad -- sadly real. And as in life, you're torn between hating people's actions and weeping for the people themselves. Other reviewers have given specific criticisms, both thoughtful and valid; and I don't disagree. This is not a darkly deep book. But I recommend it to anyone who enjoys sharp, entertaining dialogue; clever plotting; smart, interesting police procedures; and flawed people who are still appealing (some of whom I've met as neighbors!) and human. Kudos to the authors.....
