Great Sport Story for Kids

This is an excellent story about a start up football team in a small town, and naturally along the way there are problems to deal with, but nothing is impossible. My own baseball story is a start up team with a retired janitor, similar to a grandfather in this story, coaching a bunch of average kids, so I know how exciting "The Long Arm Quarterback" can be. And I like grassroots stories that originate in a small town.
This book is easy, fun, and exciting to read. It will hold the attention of any kid for many hours to come, I strongly recommend it for any kid who loves to read, I give it five stars, and I'm Marvin P. Ferguson, author of Boys On The Gold Coast.

Long-Arm Quaterback

Cap decided to make a man football league but someone wanted to take his spot so he told his granpa (coach of the team), then granpa let both of them play.I agree with the author about this book. My favorite part was when Cap and Jimmy both try to be quaterback. I liked it because the author showed how each character feeled. Iwould recommend this book anyone who likes football because this book is a story based on football.

I thought this book was decent. I do love that the book shows the way kids become football stars. If you have that same dream, this is a good book to get advice about making your dream come true. But I think that the action that went on in this book was not enough to make me excited. I would have liked to have seen more interesting things happening in the book. It would have been nice to have the kids go through tryouts to make the team, clutch endings to some of the games, and some players having to play through injuries. If I were to have written this book, I would have made it more like the movie "The Blind Side" where a person struggles and then rises to the top. But overall I enjoyed the book.

It's a book I often advise first year docs to purchase. It is insightfully written, and I keep mine on my desk where I can easily refer back to it

seriously interested in classical guitar.

All the stuff your teacher never told you

about tone production, nails, and lots

of tips on overcoming technical difficulties

like the bar and tremolo. Solid book,

a real enlightment and great help for me.

Great Book for Low Intermediate and Above Players

I have been playing classical guitar for many years. Like many players I got to the point of being "pretty good" but could never break through the invisible wall of getting to "really good". Anyone who has been playing for a while knows just how hard that is. I finally started a systematic search to find the resources to get me there. I found this book in a roundabout way. I was watching William Kanengiser's excellent DVD "Classical Guitar Mastery". In my opinion it is one of the best instructional videos I have ever seen for intermediate players. He pays tribute at the end to Lee F. Ryan and his book "The Natural Classical Guitar" which is also excellent but hard to find. Ryan's book has a bibliography which made reference to Charles Duncan, and he gave this book a high recommendation..

The reason I like this book is that it deals with the finer aspects of the mechanics of playing well in great detail. That includes right and left hand position issues and proper finger movement in relation to the strings. If you were to read the book as a beginner it would probably be too much information and it would not mean that much. After you have struggled for a while with the instrument you can better appreciate the significance of what he is saying. To me the section dealing with issues in shaping your nails is worth the price of the book by itself.

This is not a guitar method. If you don't know how to play it is not going to teach you. You need Frederick Noad or Aaron Shearer for that, but this book does a great job of filling in gaps and bringing clarity to things discussed in those guitar method books.

This is the mother lode of detailed technique

My classical guitar teacher told me about this book. I had many questions about the exact details of very minute technical issues,eg angle of the nails on the strings, the shaping of the nails, arm position, wrist position etc etc. This book explains "everything" in much more detail than, eg the Parkening or Woad books.
Other Classical guitar experts might not agree with everything in this book, but at least it looks at every technical issue.

very eye-opening and motivational

I recently discovered Joyce Meyer and now I can't get enough of her! I definitely struggle with a "mouth issue" and as soon as I heard about this book I knew it was written for me! The book has a scripture on every page as well as personal reflections and stories from Joyce. It forces you to take a good look (or listen) at yourself. It makes you think about the consequences of things you say as well as the motivation behind what you say. It reinforces what Mom always said plain and simple..."If you don't have anything nice to say don't say it!"

If you can't keep friends, or keep the peace this is for you

If you think back on all the friends you have lost and all the times you have been in an arguement then you need to think of who was always at the seen...YOU! I have had a hard time keeping peace in my life. I always have to say what I think...well its wrong!!! This book has changed my life, my marriage, and my way of raising my children. It has humbled me and I LOVE IT> I have been freed for my MOUTH...it was out of control. This book is for you if you don't know how to Just shut up and go with the flow of life. Stop saying everything you think...just glorify God...if you want to do that...buy this book...you will want to share it too. She wrote this book for the lay person...just normal people...its for men and woman.

About the Author
Gary Snyder was born in San Francisco on May 8, 1930. His first book, Riprap, published in 1959, has become a classic in American poetry, and he’s gone on to publish more than a dozen collections of poetry and prose. Practice of the Wild is one of the most influential books about the environment of the last fifty years. His recently completed long poem, Mountains and Rivers Without End, is broadly recognized as one of the greatest long poems in American literature, and his last book of poems, Danger on Peaks, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He was awarded the Bollingen Prize for poetry in 1997. He also has the distinction of being the first American to receive the Buddhism Transmission Award from the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai Foundation.

I'm glad to have a new book of Gary's poems. I am thankful for his life, his rootedness, and that he has so simply shared it with us all, over and over again. He stands before us on the page a plain old man, and in this, becomes remarkable. He calls us into our most human selves. Good for you Gary! Thanks for all of it.

Gary Snyder rocks

Gary Snyder, what a man. In the fall of 1968 I watched Thurgood Marshall preside over a moot court of law students, heard Alex Haley speak about his time and conversations with Malcolm X and his current project, Roots, but the most powerful presentation I witnessed on campus that freshman fall was a poetry reading and elucidation by Gary Snyder.

Though identified as one of the Beats, he didn't speak at all about that time or those people. In hindsight we can see that he influenced the Beat poets and writers more than they him. He introduced Allen Ginsberg, Phillip Whalen and Jack Kerouac to Buddhist thought, sensibilities, and Zen meditation. He got Kerouac and Phillip Whalen jobs as fire lookouts in the Cascades. Now at 83, he is one of the few surviving and other than Laurence Ferlinghetti, may be the longest lived of the Beats.

That night in ’68 he read his poems, mostly from his upcoming Turtle Island, for which he would win the Pulitzer Prize. After each poem he spoke of the connections to Buddhism, the earth, Native American symbology and myths. He talked, knowing poetry was his way to link them together. Then he would recite another poem. He was aware of the difficulty of trying to assimilate so many histories, cultures, identities and ideas into a brief spoken format. He tried his best to inform his listeners, that night to his audience, and ever after to the readers of his poems.

He tried to explain his melded interests, a sacred earth, our environment, how cultures from ancient Chinese to Native American treated their world, and how to translate it into words. He was living in the eastern Sierras, trying to integrate what he knew with the life he lived and observed. He was sympathetic to the loggers and the back to the land neighbors in his mountains, but did not hesitate to point out anomalies. He said the geodesic domes erected by new age wannabes seemed like “warts on the earth.”

Now I occasionally come across one of his poems. It's like running into an old friend. It's hard to remember too many details of my only encounter with him. I admire his passion of exploration. He seems never to have stopped, delving further into environmental care and activism. He has never ignored the world he is part of, still striving to preserve and convey what is important. His unifying vehicle has always been poetry, his sincerity overwhelming. This I recall then, and imagine now.

Then I met him at a reading this year. He makes the world a better place.

So Snyder has been a constant voice for as long as I have known there is such a thing as poetry. Is this his best book? No. It is uneven, but it is still a major work because he is so important. His poem for his dead wife is memorial, eulogy, celebration, sadness. Alone it makes this an important book.
