Missile Flight Simulation, by Jeffrey Strickland

A missile flight simulation is a computational tool that calculates the flight of a missile from launch until it engages the target. The simulation is based on mathematical models of the missile, target and environment. This book provides instruction for the preparation of these mathematical models to simulate the flight of a surface-to-air missile. The 2nd Edition of Missile Flight Simulation provides updated simulation processes using MATLAB® and Simulink™, while improving and clarifying previous content. The book may be used as a reference or as a textbook, although it is devoid of exercises. However, the reader is encouraged to perform the simulation of Charter 12 using MATLAB® and Simulink™, or a programming language such as FORTRAN (see Chapter 10). The book is not intended to be a missile flight engineering reference and does not contain every aspect of missile flight. It provides the appropriate content for simulating missile flight from launch to terminus only.

A must have for the missile systems engineer
By John D. Mcglynn
I recently acquired a copy of "Missile Flight Simulation" by Dr. Jeffrey Strickland. I have worked in missile defense and tactical missile seeker system engineering for more than 20 years and I find this to be one of the more useful items in my missile flight dynamics library, after Zarchan's priceless "Tactical and Strategic Missile Guidance."

Dr. Strickland first provides a solid grounding in missile fundamentals, the physics of flight, and associated missile systems/subsystems in the first three chapters - after that the reader is plunged into a solid mathematical treatment of the physics of missile flight and flight simulation of missiles and targets. In later chapters there is a first-rate treatment of guidance and control and missile seekers - EO/IR and RF - at various levels of simulation fidelity, as well as a solid treatment of HWIL simulation techniques and pros/cons. The final third of the text concentrates on a systematic development of a missile as a system, and the translation of missile systems engineering into equivalent software engineering and algorithm development, including several helpful Matlab/Simulink examples.

I would like to close by stating two observations, which are, of course, only my personal opinion. First, this is a very valuable reference for expert-level practitioners of missile-systems engineering and missile flight simulation, and a great addition to the technical library of anyone involved in missile systems engineering and missile flight simulation. Secondly, I would like to state what - in my opinion - it is NOT. I don't think that this is a standalone textbook - I would find it quite difficult to use this book as a textbook, even at the graduate level - either as a student or as an instructor. In all fairness, I think it stands on its own as a reference and would make a valuable adjunct to a graduate level text in this area (e.g., Zarchan's text).

If you are a practicing missile systems engineer or heavily invested in missile flight simulation - from low-fidelity link-budget models to high-fidelity 6-DOF flyout simulations - this is a must have for your reference library.

Review of Missile Flight Simulation by J. Strickland
By D. Hollingshead (Ann Arbor, MI)
I have been involved in engineering analysis and simulation for 41 years and specifically in tactical missile modeling and design for 26 years. I am currently responsible for introducing new staff engineers to mathematical and physical concepts required to understand operation and performance of tactical missile functional systems. I purchased this book based on the review provided by Mr. Mcglynn.

Tactical guided missile design involves virtually every field of classical physics and engineering science and as such, attempting to explain the underlying physics and mathematical concepts as well as computer implementation in a single book is going to be at an introductory level at best. I feel that Mr. Mcglynn has focused on the positives of the book, rather than acknowledging that there are a number of flaws and shortcomings.

Things that are "right" about this book include the overall introduction in Chapter 2. It provides a decent overview of the various missile subsystems on the most part, and I believe this is the best feature of the book overall. The author provides a description of the subsystems in more detail in other chapters: Chapter 4 on missile dynamics derives the 6-DoF equations in sufficient detail. Chapter 6 on propulsion is adequate as a description of rocket motors. More discussion of air-breathing engines would be useful. Discussion of target motion in chapter 7 and scene simulation in chapter 9 are topics that are adjunct to describing missile physics and functional design, but certainly are important in simulation and as such are helpful as reference topics. Chapters 10, 11 and 12 are dealing with computer implementation issues. In my opinion, these are written at an overview level, and the numerical implementation in Chapter 12 in particular could have been deleted.

Things that I believe need improvement in the book counterbalance its positives to a large degree. First and foremost is that I believe the author did not adequately describe guided missiles in terms of feedback control system concepts. These concepts are alluded to, but not in any detail. My contention is that without a firm grasp of these concepts, understanding the target tracker, flight control and overall guidance loop itself are not possible. Many people new to missile simulation come with training in computer science, classical physics and mathematics but have no exposure to control systems engineering. A chapter needs to be included discussing linear systems, Laplace transforms and the rudiments of control systems. One example of this shortcoming is discussion of CLOS guidance where the author describes that guidance requires both an offset error and an offset error rate. The reason for the rate term is not apparent unless one understands feedback control system stability.

In my opinion, chapter 4 on aerodynamics, which admittedly is a tough subject,is the least satisfying of the book. It does not adequately explain the physics or thermodynamics of compressible fluid flow; it is confusing in places and outright wrong in one section. The overall tenor is that this description was based on subsonci wing theory and airplane aerodynamics theory which differ from Body-Wing-Tail missile supersonic aerodynamics in several major respects. There is no mention of how shock wave physical characteristics and wave drag. The author appears not to be aware of slender body aerodynamic theory applicable to missiles.

I also felt that no mention of the navigation system and its relation to both flight control and guidance systems is a serious omission. In several places the author states that the missile doesn't have its velocity vector available. All modern missiles have an inertial measurement unit that provides this. Proportional Navigation (PN) guidance is arguably the most important guidance concept to understand for missileers. I feel that the discussion of this does not provide adequate detail. I would recommend the series of six papers by the staff of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (available online at no cost).

Other areas that I feel are not developed in sufficent detail for a reference book are the discussion of coordinte transforms, which are relegated to an appendix with little explanation of how they are developed. In my experience coordinate transforms and their computation present a major source of problems translating mathematical models into a working missile simulation. Somewhat related is a lack of detail about "aerodynamic trim" 3-DoF models and what they imply about 3-DoF simulation coordinate transforms. I didn't see where the "Pseudo-5 DoF" simualtion approach was addressed at all.

As an aside, there are many typographical errors, which are quite confusing to the neophyte and the typesetting could be improved. Fixing these errors (or providing an errata list) would help with readability.

Overall, the book should provide a starting point for people being introduced to missile simulation, and the relatively low price provides decent value per dollar for people entering this business; however, I don't believe that even moderately experienced missileers will gain a great deal this book.

A must have for beginners
By John Gault
I have not been involved in engineering analysis and simulation as Mr. Hollingshead, but I also bought this book based partially on Mr. Mcglynn's recommendation and I had also downloaded the free low-res version from the author's website.
Let me first say that Mr. Hollingshead presumes to understand the author's mind and brings years of engineering presuppositions into play. Dr. Strickland is not an engineer; he is a mathematician. As a physicist, I am well aware that we look at concepts, identical ones, with a different perspective, than does a mathematician. I believe the same is true for engineers. At any rate, this book on surface-to-air missile simulation is from the perspective of a mathematician. This is probably the reason that Dr. Strickland spends an entire chapter on numerical implementation, which Mr. Hollingshead finds fault with.

Are things "not right with this book"? Probably, but a book that covers the depth and breadth of material that Mr. Hollingshead is looking for cannot be covered in one volume of one book, in my opinion. It would appear that Dr. Strickland took a "just enough" approach to areas like flight dynamics, in order to get to the mathematical modeling (which is his forte) of a physical phenomenon, in this case a missile.

Is the text full of typographical errors? I have found a few, but not as many as Mr. Hollingshead claims, nor more than I would expect. Mr. Hollingshead has made four typographical errors in his short review (see if you can find them).
I do agree that "overall, the book should provide a starting point for people being introduced to missile simulation, and the relatively low price provides decent value per dollar for people entering this business." In fact books with similar treatment of the subject could cost three time as much as this text. Perhaps that is why there were some "editing slipups."
In summary, I am really enjoying this books--I have not completely digested it. It makes complicated concepts simpler, provides numerous examples and graphics, and is well written. I was able to reconstruct Dr. Strickland's 5-DOF simulation in Chapter 12 with ease. I found the material in every section useful in its breadth of coverage, and a few in their depth of coverage.

For the price of this book, I would by three and give two to younger collegues. I have never seen works this specialized and extensive sell so little. Dr. Strickland did an excellent job keeping costs down, and his choise to use MATLAB and Simulation was excellent. However, one could aslo use the GNU Public Octave as well, and at know cost.

I highly recommend this book to beginnig molders, MATLAB users, and those who desire a refresher of the basics. But remember, this is a book about missile flight simulation. For detailed background on missile dynamics and guidance and control systems, you may need supplemental material. I am certain that Dr. Strickland is capable of witing there supplements, but from browzing his website, his passion appears to be simulation.

And by the way, It is best to criticize a work, rather than the author of the work. Most critics have never been able to walk in an author's shoes :)

About the Author
Sarah Horton is a consultant for strategic planning for websites and web applications. She also does accessibility and usability reviews. Sarah started her career in interaction design in 1991 at the Yale Center for Advanced Instructional Media, creating award-winning interactive instructional software. She was an instructional technologist at Dartmouth College for 11 years before becoming director of web strategy and design. As director, she was responsible for planning and developing Dartmouth's digital environment, and she led a team of user-experience professionals responsible for web and media design, development, and production. More recently, Sarah was Web Strategy Project Lead at Harvard University, responsible for strategy and user experience design for the Harvard Web Publishing Initiative. Sarah is currently Director of Accessible User Experience and Design with The Paciello Group. Sarah is co-author with Patrick Lynch of Web Style Guide, now in its third edition and translated into at least eight languages. She also wrote Web Teaching Guide, which in 2000 won the American Association of Publishers award for best book in computer science. Her third book, Access by Design, combines the disciplines of universal design, accessibility, and usability into guidelines for designing websites that are universally usable.

Whitney Quesenbery is a user researcher, user experience practitioner, and usability expert with a passion for clear communication. She has been in the field for too many years, working with organizations from The Open University to the National Cancer Institute. She enjoys learning about people around the world and using those insights to design products where people matter. Before a little beige computer seduced her into software, usability, and interface design, she was a lighting designer in the theater. Like every other element of the production, lighting has to help tell the story. The scenery, lighting, costumes, direction and acting all have to work together tell the same story. She learned a lot about the craft of storytelling from watching hours of rehearsals. Whitney has served as president of the Usability Professionals' Association (UPA), on the boards of the Center for Plain Language and UXnet, and as a manager of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) Usability and User Experience Community. As a member of two U.S. government advisory committees, she is working to update accessibility requirements and to improve the usability and accessibility of voting systems for U.S. elections. Whitney is a frequent author and presenter in industry events and is a contributor to UXmatters.com. Her first publication on storytelling was a book chapter on "Storytelling and Narrative" in The Personas Lifecycle, by John Pruitt and Tamara Adlin. She's also proud that her chapter "Dimensions of Usability" in Content and Complexity turns up on so many course reading lists. You can find Whitney on Twitter @whitneyq.

At last: the book we need now on accessibility
By C. Jarrett
Some dozen years ago, I had a conversation with a web developer that went like this:

Him:"Our web site meets WCAG triple A"
Me:"But do you know whether people with disabilities can use it?"

Of course, he was right to be proud of his achievement. The WCAG guidelines, published by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the W3C consortium, are "a single shared standard for web content accessibility". It's important to meet them.

But I was also right. The purpose of the guidelines, and of all accessibility initiatives, is to create things that people with disabilities can use. For example: my father. His sight is no longer good enough for him to be able to drive, so now grocery shopping happens online. He struggles to read anything on paper, but the web means he can continue his historical research.

Up to now, there were books and resources about making things work for people with disabilities, and there was WCAG. But there were lots of gaps between them.

Sarah Horton and Whitney Quesenbery have magnificently filled those gaps with this book. I'm going to declare an interest: they shared an early draft with me. At that stage, their intention was clear and what I wanted. But I hope they won't mind if I reveal that the draft I saw was best described as a muddle. I cheered them on - but between you and me, I wondered if they'd manage to deliver.

Well, they certainly did. A remarkably short time later, I got back my copy. Wow! This was the book that I wanted them to write. It's clear, it's engaging, it's practical. It's about making things work for people with disabilities. And it explains how what we need to do relates to the WCAG standard.

Buy it, read it, use it.

Great foundation for educating new and experienced Accessibility Specialists, UX Designers, and Web Developers
By My Opinion
This book is well organized and written in “plain language”. It’s a great read for both beginner and experienced accessibility, UX, and web development professionals.

The book takes a unique user-centered design approach to explaining web accessibility through a series of “personas” (characterizations explaining how users with different abilities approach using the web). Each chapter also includes a mapping of the chapter’s Accessible User Experience (UX) principles to the relevant WCAG 2.0 web accessibility principles (POUR) and requirements.

The personas and examples included in this book help to tell the story of why web accessibility is so important in the daily lives of many people. Moreover, the personas go beyond "traditional" examples of people with disabilities (e.g., a blind user using a screen reader to access a web page or a deaf user who requires closed captions for multimedia content). The “Lea” persona, for instance, breathes life into the “invisible” disability of fibromyalgia and explains how important keyboard accessibility is in reducing Lea’s fatigue in the workplace.

Making Accessibility Accessible for designers, programmers and testers
By Michael Larsen
When I started working at my current company, I came in right at a time when we were working on a large Accessibility project. For those not familiar with the term Accessibility, it’s the variety of standards, tools, and devices that collectively allow for individuals with disabilities to get access to the information, either on their systems or on the web, and interact with it as seamlessly as everyday users that do not have disabilities.

There are several standards that can be referenced and used as starting points for understanding accessibility, and a variety of tools, both free and commercial, exist to help the programmer and tester address accessibility issues, create fixes, and test them to see if they work as intended. Over the past year, Accessibility has become a focal point of my testing practice, one I didn’t spend much time thinking about or doing prior to working here.

While it’s important to understand accessibility, it would be even better if more people were to give thought to accessibility and testing for accessibility in their design decisions, and early in the process make the case that Accessibility to all users (or as many as possible) is an important part of our mission as product owner, creators, designers and testers. Sarah Horton and Whitney Quesenbery approach this challenge and this mission with their book “A Web For Everyone”. More than just ways to code and test for accessibility, this book attempts to help anyone who creates software applications to develop the understanding and the empathy necessary to make design decisions that truly help to make "A Web for Everyone" possible.

So how do Horton and Quesenbery score on this front?

Chapter 1 lays out the case for why we all should consider creating A Web for Everyone, and using the “Principles of Inclusive Design” (POUR) at the outset. Inclusive design can be seen as the cross section of good design, usability and accessibility. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 standard is introduced, which encompasses various accessibility standards in use in the U.S., the U.K., the European Union, etc. Pour uses seven principles for helping design products that work for the widest range of abilities. Equitable, Flexible, Simple, Intuitive, Perceptible, Tolerant and Considerate of Space and Effort make up the core of POUR. This chapter also focuses on Design Thinking, which emphasizes understanding the human needs first, rather than letting the technology dictate the scope or direction. Combining WCAG, POUR, universal design, and design thinking, starting with the user experience, we can make great strides in designing sites and applications that allow for the greatest possibility of use by a broad variety of users and ability levels.

Chapter 2 introduces us to the idea of People First Design by introducing us to eight different people. To those unfamiliar with the idea of “personas”, this is a great introduction, and a really nice modeling of the idea. Rather than make eight abstract personas, the book outlines eight people in quite specific detail; their physical and cognitive abilities, their skill with technology and understanding/knowledge, and attitudes (motivation, emotions & determination) are fleshed out so that we can relate to them, as well as their unique challenges and abilities/disabilities. By having so much detail, we can empathize with them as though we actually know them. Personal interjection here; even with this level of detail, personas are, by necessity, incomplete. They are stand-in’s for real people. While we will have to “fill in the blanks” for a fair number of things, the more complete a persona we can make and identify with, the more likely we will be able to consider their interaction and design for them to be effective.

Chapter 3 sets the stage for the idea of “Clear Purpose”. Clear Purpose starts with understanding our audience, putting “Accessibility First” to ensure that the broadest group of people can use the product effectively. Emphasis on universal design and equivalent use are more desirable than accommodation, since accommodation usually makes for a less fulfilling experience.

Chapter 4 focuses on Solid Structure. An emphasis is placed on the various markup and presentation options including the options associated with HTML, HTML5 and WAI-ARIA, separating the content from the presentation (yes, CSS is useful for accessibility as well as for eye candy) and optimizing content to be organized in a way that screen readers and assistive technologies can get to the the most important content first. Most important, sites with well defined structure help to remove barriers, and give users confidence they can find what they need when they use a site or an application.

Chapter 5 covers Easy Interaction. By focusing ion making interactions easy for those with disabilities, we go a long way in developing a product that is easier to interact with for everyone. Focusing on keyboard interactions, having codes in both HTML and CSS that leverage assistive technologies to provide more details or outline areas where the keyboard has focus, or to speak to the user where the keyboard focus currently is. Easy interaction enables users to control the interface, with large enough controls. It avoids taking unexpected actions for users that they can do on their own. Easy interaction also includes both preventing and handling errors in an accessible way.

Chapter 6 is all about orientation and navigation, or as the book puts it, “Helpful Wayfinding”. This consists of being consistent with design elements, mapping items similarly on pages so that the look and feel remains consistent, differentiating where it really makes sense to differentiate, and include information as to where a user actually was in the site (think of the bread crumb trail we often take for granted). ARIA roles work with HTML and HTML5 tags to help define where on the page the user is to that assistive technology can reference those rage and provide meaningful alerts and signposts. It also gives some good suggestions as to how to pattern links and navigation items, such as using action words as links, presenting links in an obvious and consistent way, including images as clickable elements, keeping the navigation process simple, and resisting the temptation to bury content in layers of submenus.

Chapter 7 focuses on Clean Presentation, or placing a focus on the visual layout, images and fonts for easy perception. To get the best effect from this, though, Clean Presentation looks to take into consideration a variety of visual disabilities, as well as allowing users the ability to customize the look and feel, using native browser options or physical controls in the site or app itself (think of the font enlarging/shrinking of a Kindle eBook as an example). Stylesheets can help considerably in this regard, and can allows the visuals to me modified both at the user preference level and at the device level (laptop, vs. tablet. vs. phone). Making a contrast between the text and background, font size, style, weight, and spacing, as well as the contrast for images can also help make a site more usable.

Chapter 8 gets to the heart of the matter regarding “Plain Language” Not to be confused with “summing down” content, but writing to the intended audience with words and terms they will understand. Plain language also helps drive content presentation. Clear headings, columns to break up text, small paragraphs, bullet points and use of bolding, italics and links. In general, make it a point to read your site regularly, and incorporate your personals to see what they would think of your presentation.

Chapter 9 covers Accessible Media. Much of what we post requires visual cues. Images and audio/video are the most obvious, and there are differing challenges depending on the individual and the disability. For sighted users, image rich sites can be little more that large blank canvases with a few words here and there. Audio files cannot easily be consumed by those who cannot hear. This is where aspects like alt tags for image, closed captioning for video files, transcripts for audio files, and other ways to describe the content on the page will goa long way towards letting more people get involved with the content.

Chapter 10 brings us to Universal Usability, or put in a different way, a focus on a great user experience for all can go a long way towards helping incorporate many accessibility ideas for everyone. Technology should not have to be fought with to get a job done, or to accomplish a goal. Well designed sites and apps anticipate user interaction, and help guide them to their completion, without requiring a lot of redirection or memorizing of options to get a task completed. A popular phrase is “Don’t make me think!” the site or app should allow the user to focus on their goal, not trying to figure out how the site or app needs to have them achieve it.

Chapter 11, In Practice, looks to unify the concepts in the book into a holistic approach. More than just using the techniques described, the organization as a whole needs to buy into the value of accessibility as a lifestyle and a core business goal. Start by evaluating your current site and seeing where you re doing well and where changes would be valuable. Determine what training, skills, people power and infrastructure will help you get from A to B. Also, while personas are a great heuristic, they do not take the place of flesh and blood people dealing with the various disabilities we want to help make our software accessible to. Look to interact with and develop relationships with real people who can give a much clearer understanding of the challenges, so that you can come up with better solutions.

Chapter 12 considers The Future, and what A Web for Everyone might look like. Overall goals include a web that is ubiquitous, where accessibility is part of design from the ground up. Another goal is flexibility as a first principle of design. Our interaction should be invisible, or at least stay out of our way as much as possible. Methods in which we will get to that place will involve being more inclusive and diverse in our understanding of who uses our products, and how they use them. We’ll need to make accessibility part of the way we think, not as an afterthought after we’ve done everything else.

The book ends with three appendices. Appendix A is a brief listing of all the principled discussed in each chapter, and would make for an excellent starting point for any story workshop or test design session. This is a great set of “What if?” questions for software testers. Appendix B is a summary of the WCAG 2.0 standard and how the various sections map to the chapters of the book. IF you want to get into the nitty-gritty details of the spec, or get access to other links and supporting documentation, that’s all here. Appendix C gives a lengthy list of additional reading (book, links, etc.) about the topics covered in the book. If you want to know more about any specific area or heading, check here.

Bottom Line:

"A Web For Everyone" gives a lot of attention to the the personas and real world examples of accessible design, which are interspersed through all of the chapters. We see their plights, and we empathize with them. These persona examples are humanizing and very helpful. They help us see the what and the why of accessibility. We see many interesting design ideas shared, but we get only a few examples of the how. Implementation is discussed, but only a few ideas are fleshed out beyond the basic prose. This is not necessarily a criticism, because A Web for Everyone does a really good job explaining the what’s and the why’s of accessibility design. High level design ideas and technology briefs are handled quite nicely. A variety of coding examples to show the ideas in actual practice, not so much. If you are looking for a guide to coding sites for accessibility with exercises and examples to create, this isn’t that book. If, however, you want to get inspired to make, test or promote software that can be used and usable by a broader variety of people, this book does an admirable job.

The book that inspired John Lennon's Mind Games
By Mark C. Riva
The following is excerpted from The Cynical Idealist: A Spiritual Biography of John Lennon (Quest Books, December 2009).

Consider the pieces of decorated paper in your wallet that give you the power to walk into a shop you've never visited before and leave with whatever strikes your fancy. Consider how traffic laws are observed on a normal day in the city versus how they are observed while a riot is taking place. Consider how you behave when surrounded by thoughtful, polite people, but how petty you would become if marooned somewhere with a group of self-gratifying, devious individuals.

Human society is founded on agreement. Paper money has power only as long as everyone agrees on its value. Laws are relevant only as long as a significant percentage of people agree to observe them. Each of us has a set of values we find valid, but if the group surrounding us is playing by a different set of rules, we'll find it extremely difficult to resist conforming.

What we agree on shapes society. Once enough of us agree that character is more important than skin color, racism will tend to vanish. Once enough of us agree that it is absurd to pay a woman and a man different wages for performing the same job, gender bias will tend to wither away. Once enough of us agree that cigarette smoke is harmful, the acceptability of smoking will tend to diminish.

Now, what if a significant number of us were to agree that -- starting next Monday -- we would treat everyone we encountered with respect, compassion, and love?

John Lennon realized, then propounded, that since as humans we have the ability to change our own habits and convictions, the only barrier to our living in a better world is agreement that we are committed to it. He implied the concept in "All You Need Is Love," "Instant Karma (We All Shine On)," and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)." However, he crystallized his point of view in his masterpiece, "Imagine." In simple but resonating lyrics, he sketched the framework of a harmonious world he and other dreamers had in mind, concluding with an invitation to the listener to join them.

Then he read a book called Mind Games, by Robert Masters and Jean Houston, published in 1972. Just as the Maharishi had come along at precisely the right moment in Lennon's life, echoing his point of view plus offering a proven method to help reach the goal he wanted to reach, Masters and Houston confirmed Lennon's own insights about psychic exploration and provided a structured process to help others expand their consciousness.

The authors had been involved in LSD research in the 1960s. After the government ceased to license such research, they developed alternative approaches to mind exploration based on meditation, assisted trance, and guided imagery.

In Mind Games they set forth a series of mental adventures for small groups designed to tap into four levels of the psyche: the sensory, the psychological, the mythic, and the spiritual. They placed the "games" in the tradition of mystery schools of the distant past; seekers could find personal meaning and enlightenment in decoding the symbolic language of their own dreams and trance images and, by use of creative visualization, could improve their daily lives and stretch their own boundaries of what they thought possible.

The objective was to learn to access the unconscious mind for creative solutions to conscious problems. Not only was the unconscious mind a rich and endless resource that could be called upon whenever needed, but working within a deep trance a person could take advantage of an entirely different unreeling of time. That is, a clock in the room might register the passage of five minutes, but the perception of that elapsing time to someone who is meditating can be tremendously distorted. In five minutes of a trance state, a person might mentally rehearse an hour-long speech or go on a yearlong quest in search of the Holy Grail.

By means of the mind games in the book, participants could free themselves from negative attitudes and inhibitions and become more creative, more confident, and more mentally adventurous. In short, they could become more fully realized human beings.

The training ignited Lennon's imagination. He saw it leading to a cadre of mentally liberated people infiltrated throughout a less-enlightened society -- "mind guerrillas" working toward a higher purpose than their contemporaries and having a positive influence on them. To him, expanding legions of mentally liberated people would inevitably build the level of agreement necessary to bring into existence the peaceful society that was his goal.

He wrote a song of encouragement, also titled "Mind Games." Speaking in the language of dreams (clearly Lennonesque language and Lennonesque dreams), he equated the mind games process with pagan rites. In terms such as "druid dudes," "ritual dance," and "stones of your mind," he evoked the Salisbury Plain-initiates surrounded by trilithic arches, ritualized motion, earnest chanting, and communal commitment.

To those who were beginning to believe that the spirit of the sixties had died, he was advising: don't give up, keep on; keep chanting the mantra of peace and love. Let's work together as an invisible army. We'll use the power of visualization -- some call it magic -- to project our image of peace in space and time. We'll create an "absolute elsewhere" in our minds, an ideal so detailed and realistic that our intentions will make it manifest.

Just as athletes, speakers, entertainers -- people from all walks of life -- were beginning to discover the power of visualization to improve their real-life performance, Lennon suggested that peace could be manifested in the real world through the concerted efforts of individuals to visualize it.
Lennon and Ono even had a name for the absolute elsewhere, and a description. On April 1, 1973, they held a press conference to reveal them. The media assembled as requested, expecting some newsworthy comment regarding the couple's ongoing struggle to avoid deportation from the United States. Instead they listened to the following declaration: "We announce the birth of a conceptual country, NUTOPIA. Citizenship of the country can be obtained by declaration of your awareness of NUTOPIA. NUTOPIA has no land, no boundaries, no passports, only people. NUTOPIA has no laws other than cosmic. All people of NUTOPIA are ambassadors of the country. As two ambassadors of NUTOPIA, we ask for diplomatic immunity and recognition in the United Nations of our country and its people."

The subtlety of the artistic concept was like enciphered text to most of those who had gathered to report the announcement, as well as to the fans who read it afterward -- even when the declaration was reprinted on the album sleeve for Lennon's Mind Games. It seemed that almost no one comprehended the idea they were advancing. However, what had the hallmarks of a simple April Fools' Day joke on the media (and it was, on one level) actually had much deeper import.

NUTOPIA was a proposed emotional, intellectual, and spiritual union of people. It would be an imaginary union, but certainly no more imaginary than the artificial boundaries that separated people in the "real" world. According to the announcement, an individual could become a citizen of the conceptual country simply by declaring his or her awareness of it -- in other words, by understanding what Lennon and Ono were trying to communicate between the lines. (Perhaps behind the words would be more accurate.)

"Citizens" of NUTOPIA would recognize how absurd and artificial it was to place labels on human beings: black, white, yellow, red, Japanese, British, Congolese, American, Muslim, Christian, Jew, Buddhist, conservative, liberal, socialist, capitalist, etc. Absurd because, for example, how do we categorize the offspring of a black man and a yellow woman? Or a Japanese woman who emigrates and becomes a British or American citizen? Or a Jew who converts to Christianity and later converts again to Buddhism? Is any label applied to an individual as important as his character? As important as how much personal integrity she possesses? As important as how compassionate and considerate the person is?

Citizens of NUTOPIA would mutually recognize their common humanity and their preference for peace and harmony, and they would interact in accordance with cosmic laws. Cosmic laws because those are the laws that make up our innate sense of justice. To kill each other or not to kill each other? Steal from or not steal from? Respect or not respect? Cosmic laws make sense to us, as opposed to: we should not kill except when the act is sanctioned by the proper political or religious leader, or we should never steal unless the legal machinery says that it is permissible this time (the Indians are being relocated to another region -- stake out the land you want), etc.

As a citizen of NUTOPIA -- that is, someone who "got it" -- each individual would be an example and a proponent of the common human bond. Each would qualify to serve as an ambassador to those who had not yet gotten it.

Lennon ended the statement with his customary whimsy (much as he had ended the note returning his MBE medal with a reference to "Cold Turkey" slipping down the charts). He and Yoko asked the UN for diplomatic immunity and recognition.

The very name of the imaginary country was whimsical, as well as being cryptically self-referential for Lennon. NUTOPIA -- New Utopia -- was of course a modern version of the land Sir Thomas More invented in the book he published in 1516. More coined the word Utopia from two Greek words, ou (not) and topos (place) -- that is, "no place"-or "nowhere." As a citizen of NUTOPIA, then, Lennon officially became a Nowhere Man.

Those perceptive listeners who understood and embraced the absolute elsewhere of NUTOPIA would constitute the invisible army Lennon described in "Mind Games." Acting individually, but in concert, they would bring about a more harmonious world through communal visualization.

The book Mind Games inspired Lennon's song, but his source of inspiration for the technique of visualization was Yoko Ono. She had been telling him about it, he said, since they met. The technique has an occult derivation, the idea being that on some ethereal level we are constantly in contact with the forces of the universe and that our heartfelt wishes, our prayers, communicate through the cosmos and can attract to us what we desire. A more mundane explanation is that if we focus on something we truly want, our subconscious mind will take the hint and work toward arranging it for us (i.e., if we wish passionately for riches or love or health, we will tend to motivate ourselves and be attracted to situations or behavior or opportunities that will make that outcome feasible).

Of course, the technique has its dark side. We can focus so much psychic energy on one goal -- riches, for instance -- that while it is becoming reality we lose our health or family. On a macro scale the implications are correspondingly greater. Wherever a society's collective imagination is focused will tend to gain power and inevitability. If that is a looming depression or foreign threat or shortage of an important resource, we can create through our words and actions the very outcome we dread.

Because Lennon believed that we all "shine on," he felt that each of us bears responsibility for part of the problem. "If you speak, what you say doesn't end here. I believe scientists could prove that vibrations go on and on infinitely, and therefore every action goes on and on infinitely and has its effect. If you carefully think out the effect you're going to create, there's more chance for all of us. It's hard to think of your every move. But your attitudes to life will have an effect on everyone -- and thereby, the universe."

Once, while commenting on a radio report about a demonstration against nuclear power, he provided an excellent example, on a smaller scale, of the problem of misdirected focus. Without being conscious of the fact, he said, the protesters taking part in the demonstration were calling more media attention -- and ultimately more attention by the general public -- to the very industry they opposed. They were giving it greater power. However, regardless of how laudable their goal, everyone knew that the energy produced was essential. Therefore, their efforts were counterproductive and their positive energy squandered. Lennon argued that what they ought to be doing was devoting the same time and resources to finding and calling attention to an alternative. They ought to be focused on the solution.

The coin had two sides. Just as the collective focus could become the problem, it also presented an opportunity.

Consistent with his own insight, Lennon had already used the principle of collective visualization to plant a positive image in the public psyche. He had already written a song that offered his solution, his alternative to the nightmarish futures on which the people of his era were focused -- the endless quagmire of Vietnam, world famine, Orwell's 1984, nuclear winter, apocalypse in the Middle East -- as well as his prescription to end the perennial strife of our species.

He recorded and released it in 1971, a song that would become his most famous anthem.

Lennon was a reader of Huxley, who was an inspiration for his experimentation with psychedelics. Your post caused me to pull out Island again -- which I read long ago and have forgotten. In skimming it, I quickly came across Dr. Robert. Interesting ... even though I know "Dr. Robert" was supposed to be a reference to a real doctor from the mid-sixties. Maybe Island did influence Lennon -- although Nutopia (as I understand it) was meant to be a union of like-minded people, an imaginary country they could claim as their own until the real thing comes along.

Learn to control your dreams, your sleep patterns, and maybe yourself
By Gary Bickford
A long time ago I took a graduate course/workshop (in Systems Science) that both instructed us on the various techniques in this book, and used our new-found skills to do experiments in using our inner mind capabilities to analyze and solve problems (not personal ones - real-world systems problems) and gain new insights. The overall question might be, "Can these altered states of consciousness be used in a directed way to provide different perspectives on systems problems?" One of the experiments involved presenting us with the then-new idea of what we now call ATMs and letting us meditate on them, then recording our reactions.

The methods I learned from this book and in the workshop have stood with me for years, to some extent. For a long time I was able to direct my dreams quite easily, changing the plot or the action - we were able to recognize that what happens in a dream is completely under our control, it's our world and the physics in that world can be changed. I was also able to put myself into various meditative states quite easily, using the methods taught in this book. And I was able to manage my sleep time, able to put myself to sleep for any time period from a few minutes to 10 hours - although if I was already sleep deprived it didn't work so well! So I could take a timed nap of three or four minute between classes, and wake up refreshed.

It was also a fun process. I think that, as the book recommends, it would be best, easier and more enjoyable to do this as part of a group.

I would say that some of the techniques are closely related to self-hypnosis, and so there is room for some caution in allowing yourself to get too carried away. Using almost any effective mind management methods, it is possible to 'think yourself into a state' - to take things too far, too fast, with insufficient guidance. All things in moderation.

Effectively implement comprehensive anti-money laundering regulations

Handbook of Anti-Money Laundering details the most up-to-date regulations and provides practical guidance toward implementation. While most books focus on the regulations themselves, this useful guide goes further by explaining their meaning to bank operations, and how the rules apply to real-life scenarios. The international perspective provides a broader understanding of the anti-money laundering controls that are in place worldwide, with certain country-specific details discussed in-depth. Coverage includes the Wolfsberg Principles, Financial Action Task Force guidance, the U.S. Patriot Act, and the latest from both the EU and Bank for International Settlements.

The IMF estimates that two to five per cent of the global GDP – $590 billion to $1.5 trillion – is laundered every year. Globally, banks and other financial institutions have been required to put in place specific arrangements to prevent and detect money laundering and the criminal activity that underlies it. This book provides the latest regulations and guidance toward application.

  • Understand what money laundering regulations mean in practice
  • Reference international and country-specific rules and regulations
  • Get up to speed on the most current regulations and practices
  • Implement the most effective anti-money laundering measures

In response to the increased monitoring and regulation, money launderers have become more sophisticated at disguising the source of their funds. Financial institutions' employees must be ever more aware of what they're facing, and how to deal with it, making actionable guidance a critical companion to any regulatory information. For financial institutions seeking more thorough understanding and practical advice, the Handbook of Anti-Money Laundering is a comprehensive guide.

Review
“… a must-have for banking employees involved in compliance / other ML activities" (Financial Expert, May 2015)

From the Inside Flap

Money laundering is one of the few global growth industries that seem to be prospering at present. Consequently, regulatory structures have been developing and the quality of investigation improving, leading in turn to an increase in prosecutions. The Handbook of Anti Money Laundering provides many examples of cases where prosecutions have been successful.

The reader will understand the key issues, associated risks and regulatory requirements surrounding money laundering and terrorist financing. The book also offers practical advice on compliance, identifying a number of approaches that financial institutions can adopt to deter money laundering and to identify terrorist financing.

As well as being a useful reference for individuals, the Handbook of Anti Money Laundering should be used in financial institutions to raise people's knowledge of key requirements and expectations, ensuring firms comply with local and global rules and regulations.

From the Back Cover

A PRACTICAL, INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE ON PREVENTING FINANCIAL CRIME

According to the International Monetary Fund, between 2% and 5% of global GDP is laundered each year. Money laundering is a serious threat: it underpins criminality and terrorism, and can even jeopardise economic stability. Detecting and halting this type of activity, and preventing it from occurring in future, are top priorities. The Handbook of Anti Money Laundering provides all of the basic information necessary to understand the key issues and the regulatory framework, and gives practical advice on compliance.

The market for money laundering and terrorist financing is, by its nature, global and, while different rules and regulations are implemented into local legislation, it is the global standards which underpin all of these local requirements. Therefore, such global standards as exist at the time of writing are included within the book, along with individual country profiles of all of the major global financial centres.

The Handbook of Anti Money Laundering also includes numerous examples of money laundering cases, and provides detailed references to all the relevant rules and regulations, enabling the reader to seek out further information if required. Coupled with its international perspective, this makes the Handbook of Anti Money Laundering an indispensable resource for anyone with AML responsibilities.

The "Must-Have" Anti-Money Laundering Handbook
By Rachael Mah
This Handbook of Anti-Money Laundering(AML) is the most comprehensive, educational and practical reference manual that I have ever read after being in the risk management, internal audit and training profession for nearly 3 decades.
It has concise and up-to-date global AML best practices, regulatory rules, as well as 27 country profile overviews and relevant case studies.
The Handbook is an excellent reference guide in the financial industry. It has also highlighted the "WHY" behind the importance of regular staff training and awareness programs to mitigate money laundering activities.
I would highly recommend this Handbook to all AML practitioners, AML trainers and operations personnel in the financial world.
