It's worth noting that this edition (ISBN 9781107404762) appears to be a print-on-demand reprint. While the print quality is good - better than most print-on-demand books that I've seen - it's still not as good as the original. Given the cost of the original at this point, is the decrease in quality worth the savings? Probably. From the perspective of a librarian ordering for a library, would I prefer to buy the hardcover original, if I could get it at list price? Absolutely.

Fascinating, though it ends badly

The first four parts of this book are absolutely fascinating. It's an in depth look at the psychology of shopping and it is exactly what the title promises. Underhill's company gets paid to spy on people in stores and see what they're doing wrong and right. The gems in this book are the anecdotes and the specific revelations about how any obstacle you put in the way of a shopper drops your sales figures. Any way you can make life easier raises your sales. This all seems sort of obvious, but most people running the businesses don't think it through.

One example is the entry zone at the front of the store - you'd think that's a prime location for signage, deals, brochures, etc. But when you're headed through the door into the store you see almost nothing and stop for almost nothing, and then (in America) you tend to drift to the right and then you're 'in' the store. If you put a store directory just inside the door, nobody uses it. Move it back a bit so you can find it once you're into the store and suddenly it's heavily utilized. He has hard observational data for all these, so they're compelling in addition to being fascinating.

And of course all the bad examples are great fun to read (seniors crawling along floors trying to read labels on badly shelved medicine), as are the descriptions of how different groups shop (male vs female, old vs young, parents vs. single, etc.) The whole book is pretty much a commercial for Underhill's company, but it's still informative and fun reading.

Where the book falls down is at the end, where a chapter on the Internet is shoehorned in and a perfunctory shout out to each of Envirosell's worldwide branches is included.

Even though I think he's more right than wrong, the whole Internet chapter comes across as a confused old guy muttering about how he doesn't get that new fangled rock music. He complains about how many review sites there are, for instance, and has no idea how much it can transform the shopping experience (and not just be a poor supplement). Worse, the book's entire premise is mostly about how you need observational data of real customers because they'll always do things you don't expect (can't argue there), but he HAS no data on this topic, so it's just not compelling. I can't help but think the whole chapter is just in there because 'we need something about teh intertubes'.

The 'Come Fly With Me' chapter must be in here because he needs to professionally backscratch all his international partners. It's pretty much useless and turns a mild commercial into an infomercial.

If I sound too negative, please don't take it that way - I'm just trying to tell you why this isn't a five star book. You have 220 pages of 'awesome and can't put it down' book followed by 40 pages of 'what the hell am I doing reading this' slog, then another 30 pages of fairly decent reading. If you don't read those two chapters, it's a five star book!

I loved the street smarts that Paco shares. He was a pioneer in a whole new way of looking at marketing. The principles that he sets forth are applicable to much more than retail marketing. Great instincts for the subject. You cannot read this book without learning something new. If you really understand retail marketing.you will be nodding so much in agreement that you will get a sore neck.

On the plus side, this book had alot of fascinating observations about a whole field of study about which I previously didn't really know even existed, much less had given any thought to. In addition, next time I go shopping, I will probably stop and consider the extent to which some of the author's recommendations have (or have not) been implemented. On the other hand, the book seemed much too long to me, and rather than hoping it wouldn't end, I more or less had the opposite reaction: after awhile, I found myself skimming over quite a few paragraphs, because I felt that the interesting points could have been stated in a more concise way. Repetitiveness was a problem too. Finally, it seemed as if the majority of the author's recommendations could be summed up as: Give the shopper lots of elbow room (e.g. for strollers, to avoid the butt-brush effect, etc.), and put all of the merchandise within easy reach (no stooping for older people, no unneeded reaching for children, etc.). This sounds fine in theory, but it would seem that, in practice, the author is effectively suggesting that in order to accomplish the above two goals, all retailers should either (1) double the size of their leasehold space, or (2) reduce the amount of their inventory in half. I doubt that either of these options would be feasible for most retailers, and that the reason that some of them don't follow the author's recommendations to the letter is not because they are unaware of them, or even disagree with them, but simply because neither of the above solutions would be considered feasible.

Great Society Quick Reference for Players and GMs Alike

For a while I was in charge of running Pathfinder Society games at my local store. The Pathfinder Society Primer came in handy on multiple occasions. It specifically helped new players who had never played and wanted to get involved in events. I also often used the maps and the descriptions/bonuses from he lodges to add more flavor and depth to our Society Games.

While this isn't a complete overview of everything in Pathfinder Society it definitely acts as a quick reference guide to help out myself as the game master and the players. If you are a player looking to get involved this book is great way to start learning. If you are a game master who is running society games then this is a great resource to help new players.

The book is very well written. It's very simple to understand and follow. By solving the examples, the rest of the problems just follow through. I took the class with Doctor Vu (one of the authors) and he just makes the material not only entertaining but very easy to understand.

About the Author

Xenia Naidenova is a senior researcher of the Group of Psycho Diagnostic Systems' Automation at the Military Medical Academy (St. Petersburg, Russia). She is currently the head of Project DIALOG: Methods of Data Mining in Psychological and Physiological Diagnostics. Dr. Naidenova received a diploma of engineering with a specialty in computer engineering (1963) and a PhD in technical sciences (1979), both from the Lenin Electro-Technical Institute of Leningrad. In 1999 she received a senior researcher diploma from the Military Medical Academy (St. Petersburg, Russia). She has guided the development of several program systems on knowledge acquisition and machine learning including DEFINE, SIZIF, CLAST, LAD and diagnostic test machines and has published over 150 papers. Dr. Naidenova is a member of the Russian Association for Artificial Intelligence and is on the Program Committee for the KDS.

Dr. Dmitry I. Ignatov works as an Assistant Professor for National Research University Higher School of Economics (Moscow, Russia) at the chair of Artificial Intelligence and Data Analysis. Dr. Dmitry Ignatov graduated in 2004 as a "Specialist in Physics and Mathematics" with distinction at the "Kolomna Teachers' Training Institute" (Russia, Kolomna) and in 2008 as a "Master of Applied Mathematics and Information Sciences" at the "State University Higher School of Economics" (Russia, Moscow). In 2010 he obtained his degree of "Candidate of sciences in Mathematical Modeling, Numerical Methods and Software Systems" at the "National Research University Higher School of Economics". He did his PhD (Candidate of science in Russian) research in All-Russian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information specializing in Theoretical Computer Science. He also was a guest researcher as a PhD student of the Postgraduate Program "Specification of Discrete Processes and Systems of Processes by Operational Models and Logics", Department of Computer Science, Dresden University of Technology. He is an author of more than 35 papers published in peer reviewed conferences, workshops and journals. His main interests include Formal Concept Analysis, Data Mining and Machine Learning, especially multimodal clustering and recommender systmes. He was a co-organizer of several international conferences and workshops: ICCS 2009, RSFDGrC 2011, PReMI 2011, CDUD 2011 and 2012, SCAKD 2011, EEML 2012, ICFCA 2012.

A book of collected stories on Logic in Machine Learning

This is a book of, so to speak, collected stories mainly on Logic in Machine Learning (both theory and practise) written by different talented authors. Some of them did their studies in USSR and this is a first time when their results (recent and past) comprise a part of a book in English. E.g. one of them is a USSR pioneer of Cybernetics (e.g. project URAL-1), outstanding Prof. Arkady Zakrevsky (or Arkadij Zakrevskij). He invented the LYaPAS language and algorithms for discrete automata synthesis at that time (see LYaPAS: A programming language for logic and coding algorithms). Now he is a quite active person and contributed two papers on Inductyive-Deductive Inference and Implicative Regularities as well as on Solving Large Systems of Boolean Equations (Logic for Big Data as I could say). Another author and editor is Xenia Naidenova, she works on the topics of mining logical rules from data and diagnostics test in Machine Lerning. It is interesting, e.g. that so called association rules, introduced by R. Agrawal, were known even earlier, e.g. in Formal Concept Analysis they were known as partial implications (see papers of M. Luxenburger) at the end of 80s. Xenia also proposed similar approcahes at the end of 80s in USSR, also before Agrawal. It is interesting to see these results and their contribution to Machine Learning area in her survey. Another interesting paper describes so called bimodal cross-validation; this approach extends standard cross-validation technique in Machine Learning to the case of Recommender Systems (one can find this in somewhat similar to perplexity measure in Topic Modeling). Other interesting papers covers the topics on Logical Inferece and Defesiable Inference in a specially designed N-tuple algebra, Machine Learning approaches for synthesis new inorganic compounds, ML in medical treatment, Bussiness Intelligence for E-covernment and even measuring a human intelligence by soft computing techniques. I recommend the book for those who is interested both in Logic and Machine Learing as well as in their applications. Of course it is not a textbook and some familiarity with basic Logic and Machine Learning ideas and notions is required.

A Very Historic and Important Book about a Taboo Subject of the 1950s

This is a historic book on sex which is important read and see how far in advance of the norms of the time was the study of Dr. Alfred Kinsey. During the 1950s nobody talked about sex in a medically clear way. Thus, there was a great deal of misconceptions about sex. This led to feelings of inadequacy and loneliness on the part of many adolescent boys and girls as they stumbled around trying to understand what was happening to their bodies. Today, this book may seem rather mundane and commonplace. Nonetheless, this pioneering book was a breath of fresh air to a time of great silence and ignorance.

A note on the 1998 edition

As I recently discovered after receiving this book as a gift, page 121 in the 1998 edition is actually from a different book. The 1953 edition has the correct page 121. Just an FYI to any prospective buyers.

No mode of transportation other than walking is more personal than the bicycle. "Down the Road in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam: A Bicycle Tour Through War, Genocide, and Forgiveness" is a memoir from Tim & Cindie Travis as they recount their ride through Southeast Asia and their particular adventures and misadventures. An exciting story well dotted with photographs, "Down the Road in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam" is a choice read for armchair travelers, highly recommended.

FANTASTIC AS USUAL

This is the second of the Travis' books i have and i've had their first book as an audio book.
Makes an interseting read though it is a tad light on after reading the EXCELLENT two books by Alastair Humphries.
I was very impressed with the speedy delivery to me here in Australia - about the same time it takes a book to be delivered when bought domestically - very impressive indeed.
Happy shopper yet again.
