Wonderful.

Andrew Beyer, My $50,000 Year at the Races (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1978)

Now, I rush to start by saying that while a $50,000 year at the races doesn't look so spectacular when some guy in Phoenix just cashed for $1.7 million on the Derby superfecta (on a quick-pick ticket, no less), remember that you need to figure in 1978 dollars, and this was back in the days when the exacta was the hot new thing, unless you happened to be in Mexico, where they had the Pick Six at Caliente. Most horseplayer were still grinding it out with win bets. And as anyone who's tried to make fifty grand betting $100 a race (or even, as Beyer did in his serious bets in this book, a grand) on win bets will tell you, it's a pretty serious achievement.

Andrew Beyer has always been somewhat crass, elitist, and off-putting. These traits don't come out much in his handicapping books, Picking Winners and The Winning Horseplayer, but his editorial columns almost always spark some sort of minor furor among a minority of racing fans. This being a memoir of sorts, you can be sure you're going to get the same attitude here, and you do, in spades. If you don't like Beyer's Washington Post style, you're probably going to want to pass this.

Even though this is a memoir, however, Beyer offers a number of common-sense tips that many horseplayers have probably either never learned or forgotten about; for example, the idea of specializing. Beyer shows how to do it while still betting aggressively, putting your cash down on a number of races that would cause most pros to turn somewhat green, and still make money. This is something you need to know, but you're not going to find it in any respectable handicapping tome.

A definite must for students of the game. I have long through that handicapping books should be not in the gambling section of the bookstore, but in self-help; stick this one in the inspirational section. ****

The book for one who wants to live at the windows.

Mr. Beyer takes us thru his year of betting the horses. This is the year he finally realizes his goal of becoming a full time player. I first read this book as a teenager and have been hooked on the game ever since. I might not agree with all his methods of betting but the book is a very enjoyable read.

The Master Strikes Again

Beyer once again hammers home the fact that he's the Master of Masters, the Seer of Seers, and simply the best handicapper (and author) ever to come down the pike. His witticisms, combined with a rare insight and feel into the game, make this a true joy to read and behold. His love for horse racing comes through on every page, and as we take the trip with him into realizing his lifelong dream (which is many of ours as well, I'd venture), his joy is palpable. Since the time of his writing this tome, of course, the game has become even more difficult for pure Speed Handicappers, due to the immense popularity (and success) of his now world-renowned Beyer Speed Figs, but that just adds to the pleasure. A must for any 'capper, and even for those who just enjoy great writing!

About the Author
Nan Shepherd (1893–1981) was an English lecturer at what is now Aberdeen College of Education. She made many visits to the Cairngorms with students and friends and was a keen member of the Deeside Field Club. Her many further travels included visits to Norway, France, Italy, Greece, and South Africa, but she always returned to the house where she was raised and lived almost all her adult life in the village of West Cults, three miles from Aberdeen on North Deeside.

As a'see-er' her empiricism is mystical.Her mineral self gains entry into interior recesses,cavities,hollows,chasms.She sees the earth as the earth must see itself:this is pure intellectual knowledge springing from the senses and the surprise of finding out from long acquaintance,the body itself thinks, knowledge is felt.Our bodies' motor-functions make us precognitively aware of the world,our subjectivity is embedded in the flesh of the world.'Place and mind interpenetrate until the nature of both are altered'.Our contact with nature has become enervated from this being in the world.Her book is a hymn to `living all the way through':to touching,smelling,tasting,and hearing the world.`Matter is impregnated with mind',and the world exists in a continuous `active mood...the grammar of now'.Her phenomenological attention and awareness `widen the domain of being in the vastness of non-being'.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.This book is a primer for the senses and the reading of the written word,bathed in a crystal glow of the elements,saturated with Being.Her descriptions of running water,its sounds and colour,coldness and power,are superb;her beautiful depiction of frost,ice and snow,the forms they all take,the effects of wind,cloud ,sun,light and water on,with blizzards,snow-blindness and storms;the effects of air,rain and light on the mountains,the effects of haze and mist are truly wondrous;her descriptions of the rock of the granite boss being `red',its feldspar `pink',crags,boulders and scree are `weathered to a cold grey',but the rock where newly slashed or under water is red.When her book opens up to plants,animals and birds,we truly see the aspects of the one entity,the living mountain,"love pursued with fervour is one of the roads of knowledge",reminding you of MacDarmiad's poetry or Matthiessen's Snow Leopard.There is a map of the Cairngorms plateau and a helpful glossary of Scottish words.This book can be got for as little as £3 if you do without Macfarlane's introduction.

Creates an awareness of all the senses

If you have never "walked" in the Cairngorms or want to be re-aquainted with the experience then this is the book. It is not a walker or climber's guide in the traditional sense but presents you with the author's reaction to every possible outdoor stimulus; Nan Shepherd takes you right into the heart of the high Cairngorm plateau.

True love of the natural world

Nan Shepherd was a college professor, novelist (3 published works) and poet. This book is the last work she published, towards the end of her life. It is a paean to her love of the countryside where she spent most of her life, The Cairn Gorm mountain range in Northern Scotland. Brilliant, lyrical, a great tribute to the human spirit and Man's relationship to his (and her) environment. This belongs on every bookshelf, next to Gilbert White's "The Natural History of Selborne." This edition contains an overly long Foreword that attempts to tell us that we are going to enjoy reading Nan Shepherd's words. Skip it and just read her words. Or read it AFTER reading her words.

Interesting and Thought-Provoking

I found Foolish Faith to be one of the most interesting and thought-provoking books I have read in a long time. While it is clear that the material in Foolish Faith is presenting a certain kind of religious argument and is building toward a particular conclusion, the book is never polemical in the off-putting way that much religious writing can be for non-religious readers like myself. The author's well-articulated and well-documented arguments are not easily dismissed.

Simply an incredible book. Every young person should read this. Biblical faith and true science are not now, nor have they ever been, in conflict.
This book should open many eyes. I'm interested in buying a quantity of them to give to others. So happy I came across this book online where you

Good for the beginner

Unlike the Case For series by Lee strobel, Foolish Faith does not serve a one two punch of solid info on one subject that gives a person good reason to consider God. What Foolish Faith does instead is breifly touches on many different subjects that give a person reason to consider God such as Evolution vs. Ceation and how Christianity would hold up in court. It sites people like Simon Greenleaf who the reader can then look into for deeper exploration. It is through this book that I learned of Simon Greenleaf and began to study his book on the legal validity of the four gospels. In my opinion, Foolish faith is a very good read for any one who wants a greatest hits coplilation so to speak on reason to believe that Christianity has solid reason for being.

About the Author
Author D. M. Ulmer enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1947. In two-years, he was promoted to third class electronic technician onboard the submarine USS Clamagore. Six months later, he was advised he’d be transferred to the Naval Academy Prep School. When Ulmer asked his captain “why me?” the skipper replied facetiously, “I don’t think you’re smart enough to make second class and I need the bunk space!” Ulmer returned to Clamagore in 1967 as Commanding Officer. He then became one of a few, if not the only CO, to have served in an enlisted status and as commanding officer in the same warship. Captain Ulmer’s 32 year Navy Career included: 1949 German submarine U-2513; Given to the US Navy in 1945 as partial reparation for WWII. Mar. – Sept. 1949 USS Clamagore (SS 343). 1954 US Naval Academy graduate. July 1954 – 55 USS Fremont (APA 44). July – 55 US Navy Officers’ Submarine School. Jan. 1956 – June 58 USS Halfbeak (SS 352). June 1958 – Sept 59 USS Barracuda (SSK1). 1959 – 60 Aide to Commandant 8th Naval District. July – Oct. 1960 Polaris Weapons School Dam Neck, VA. Dec. 1960 – July 62 USS Patrick Henry (SSBN 599). 1963 – 65 Staff, Commander Submarine Squadron 14. Nov. 1965 – July 67 Executive Officer USS Corporal (SS 346). What was more important the submarine recovery and danger involved or a relationship between a widower and school teacher? Your cover suggest one not the other. More torpedoes and less love affairs.

Astounding story

Ulmer, again, leads us to an undersea adventure with his trademark appealing characters; some transitional from previous novels...much to our delight! I did like those folks!
Details of submarine life is secondary to the sinister development of conspiracy and suspense.
As a 'landlubber'and a female to boot, I found the narrative to move along with a 'don't put it down' result.
Ulmer's previous novels gave us insight into the lives of submarine commanders and crew with their sometimes complicated relationships ashore, thus strengthening the appeal to a woman's readership.
Building on that, in this novel, he develops characters within varying settings leading to the conclusion colored by international intrigue.
The main conflict captivates with an astounding climax. A gripping story. Ulmer knows his subject well. His first hand knowledge conveys an authenticity to the plot, completing a tale of intensity.
In my view, this is the best of his five exceptional submarine Cold War based novels...although I am glad I didn't miss any of them.
