This technique, combined with abundant archival photos and the author's accessible writing style, makes the pages fly by almost as if reading a long, compelling story. Of course, this book only touches on salient points of LGBT history, but for young teens who are interested in learning about queer scholarship, it is an excellent place to begin. *Starred Review* Alsenas’ landmark history of American gay life focuses largely on public attitudes toward homosexuality and the seemingly endless struggle for gay rights. After a brief survey covering pre–twentieth-century America, Alsenas narrows his focus to offer a closer examination of more recent events. Thus, Chapter Two deals with the period 1910–39; Chapter Three, with 1940–59; and so on until the final chapter brings the reader to the present—and beyond. In an effort to humanize his material, the author begins each chapter with an individual story told from a personalized (i.e., lightly fictionalized) point of view. While this succeeds in dramatizing factual material, the effort may be unnecessary, since the epic story the author tells of the gradual emergence of gays and lesbians from the shadows is itself a compellingly human drama. Alsenas’ often sprightly, always engaging style makes his history even more reader-friendly, as do the many archival photographs that enliven each page. About the Author

Linas Alsenas, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, studied art history at Harvard University, where he was introduced to queer studies. After graduation, he worked for a year as an editor at a design magazine before embarking on his career in book publishing, in which he worked on The Art of Maurice Sendak: 1980 to Present, by award-winning playwright Tony Kushner, and Male Desire: The Homoerotic in American Art, by noted art historian Jonathan Weinberg, and many children’s books. Linas is a US citizen who lives with his partner in Stockholm, Sweden.

Exceptional history.

As someone who has been a gay activist for 30+ years, this is a welcome and engaging book. The design of the book, images, and white space is particularly suited to teenagers. The writing is accessible and neutral in tone. This is an excellent choice for libraries and for discussion groups. I recommend giving this book to your local libraries, youth centers, LGBT centers, anywhere that teens might be looking for LGBT information. I clearly remember the first LGBT reading list published by the American Library Association that was all of 1 page. Barbara Gittings was the editor and one of the hero's mentioned in this book. I hope to meet the author should he come to the SF Bay Area for a reading.

This book is absolutly amazing! I dont read alot but i have started reading books involving gay rights to further educate myself on the issues effecting my dearest friends. This book goes over everthing! It answered so many questions i had. i will be sharing this book with many people and encourage everyone to read it gay or straight.

This book, Gay America, written by Alsenas is a wonderful history of our struggle with equality as well as noting the great accomplishments for our LBGT community. The book itself is put together very well with a very nice front cover that would make it look great on an teen, or adult's bookshelf, or coffeetable. Kudos to Alsenas for this book!!!!

Christopher Isherwood was a diverse writer whose accomplishments included The Mortmere Stories (Edward Upward Series), A Single Man and a translation of The Song of God (Bhagavad Gita). But many critics hailed The Berlin Stories, the reissue of two of his best novels, as his finest. In the book, a man named Christopher Isherwood, who is and is not the author, writes a story of exile, combining the best of Isherwood's real life with the best of the life he imagined.

Collection of two previously published novels written by Christopher Isherwood, published in 1946. Set in pre-World War II Germany, the semiautobiographical work consists of Mr. Norris Changes Trains (1935; U.S. title, The Last of Mr. Norris) and Goodbye to Berlin (1939). The Berlin Stories merge fact and fiction and contain ostensibly objective, frequently comic tales of marginal characters who live shabby and tenuous existences as expatriates in Berlin; the threat of the political horrors to come serves as subtext. In Goodbye to Berlin the character Isherwood uses the phrase "I am a camera with its shutter open" to claim that he is simply a passive recorder of events. The two novels that comprise The Berlin Stories made Isherwood's literary reputation; they later became the basis for the play I Am a Camera (1951; film, 1955) and the musical Cabaret (1966; film, 1972). -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

Corresponds well with the history of Berlin. the moods reflect the era of rebuilding after WWII and describe the environment which
allowed Hitler to gain control and offer Germany a chance to regain power and rebuild after the Treaty of Versailles.

A Great Book

Berlin Stories is a wonderful book. I am reading it again it's so good!!!!!!! The writing is absolutely impeccable. Though I read it because of my obsession with the musical "Cabaret", I found it to be a great book in its own right. I think Isherwood would be proud of the current Broadway version of "Cabaret". I don't know what else to say:)

The authors and languages are: Anna Wierzbicka (English), Cliff Goddard (Australian English), Jock Wong (Singapore English), Zhengdao Ye (Chinese), Catherine Travis (Colombian Spanish), Rie Hasada (Japanese) and Felix Ameka (Ewe). Roaring Thirties!

I can't comment on the veracity of Tolands account, so this review deals with the book's impact on someone reading about the 30's American Gangster era for the first time. The book is fast & furious. It has a style & pace that seems totally in sync' with the wild events & full-blooded characters involved. Dillinger & Company come alive here. The accounts were thrilling, detailed & totally enjoyable. Although the author is commendably non-judgemental, not unsurprisingly, Dillinger comes over as the Class-Act of the the mobs. Whilst he certanly had a style, I use the word "class" with some reservation! The rest were just out & out villians! I was pleased to see the lawmen get a fair share of the action. The dedication & bravery of these men is in the most part commendable & a credit to their profession. The thought of facing up to a gang, including such vicious characters as Baby Face Nelson & Homer Van Meter, armed to the teeth with automatic weapons, is chilling indeed. The bank escapes give the reader a good feel of the times. It seemed that a five minute chase from any city centre bank would find the fugitives deep inside a maze of unmade roads. An almost total lack of communication between law enforcers, plus State Line jusridiction restrictions made the already fraught pursuit of these characters difficult indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed the book & recommend it very highly. I also agree that it is a good "appetite whetter" for more books of similar genre.

Revisiting a Standard Text

When first published in 1963, Toland's The Dillinger Days seemed to be the definitive work on the public enemy era, as both a biography of John Dillinger and as a sweeping chronicle of the whole Midwest Depression crime wave, also including "Pretty Boy" Floyd, "Baby Face" Nelson, the Barker-Karpis gang, "Machine Gun" Kelly and Clyde Barrow. Indeed, Toland may even be credited with launching a revival of interest in the Barrow gang. The scattered passages on the Barrows, whose fleeting fame was largely forgotten outside Texas by 1963, was largely the inspiration for the later movie Bonnie and Clyde. Toland's main subject here was of course Dillinger and the sections on the other gangs are scantier and often erroneous. Errors also appear in the Dillinger chapters. The "second Dillinger gang" was really "Baby Face" Nelson's, which Dillinger joined after the Crown Point escape, the exact details of which will never be known with full certainty though subsequent research--by Girardin and Helmer, Joe Pinkston and others--indicates that Toland got it wrong. The "Dillinger" letter to Henry Ford was long ago proven a forgery. As a straight Dillinger biography, Toland's book is actually far less detailed and accurate than the slimmer work, nearly contemporary with his own, Dillinger: A Short and Violent Life by Robert Cromie and Joe Pinkston. Still, as a history of the Depression crime wave, it was about the best volume available in 1963. Subsequent research has turned up much new information in recent years. Other authors have corrected Toland's errors. But the fact remains that Toland's work inspired a great deal of this research. Many of us gangster buffs got our start with Toland's book, so a lot of the new information available today probably wouldn't have surfaced without it. And for all its flaws, Toland's book remains a useful starting point for anyone interested in the gangster era--the Dillinger days.

Ok but not great

John was pretty much on the money in dexcribing that this is not a book entirely about Dillinger but about the crime wave that hit the Midwest in the mid 30's and the various gangsters that were a part of it. My complaint about the book is that it read more as a travel log or calendar of events of the various gangs exploits, ie Dillinger and company went there, robbed bank, went here to hide out. It does not in any detail investigate the personal motivations of each of the gangsters or the people that helped and sympathized with them or the social situation in the country that helped spawn them. In other words, its not a very deep book. If you are looking for a timeline or an introduction to the events that made up this period in US history, its ok. If you want to understand why it occured, look elsewhere.

An Amazon purchase - and I love it!

Three great novels in one big book. Morning Glory is one of the best love stories I have ever read. It would be a great basis for a movie. It is about a down in the luck good looking man (with a bad past) who answers an ad for a husand from a down in the luck widow who is considered by the town as crazy. It is set in the early 1900s. They are both wnderful people and the story is magic. Vows is also excellent, I was able to connect to all the characters - they were very engaging and likable people. It is set in the 1800s and is about a young woman who is tomboy. She helps run the livery stable and is studying to be a vet. She is torn by her feelings for two men, and I don't blame her. I love them both too. There is a secondary love story about her father, an honorable man who is torn between two women. Both of the women are likeable also,in totally different ways. I am still reading The Gamble and so far it is just as good as the vows. It is set after the Civil War and during the temperance era. The main female character is lovable. She is a miliner who was hurt as a child by her drunk father and has a limp. Her shop is in the same building as the new saloon, purchased by a georgeous southern gentleman/gambler. Sparks fly, especially when the "dancing" girls arrive in town. The author, Spencer, has a true talent for story telling. The passion between lovers is very good but not too graphic (just sexy enough without making the reader gringe). I highly recommend all three novels contained in this big hardback book. I bought this book used. It came with the book jacket and is in excellent condition.

Three great stories

I loved this book! All three stories were great. THE HELLION was heart breaking, Rachel's father was so domineering and caused people 20 years of unhappiness. SEPARATE BEDS was the most interesting to me, I thought it took Clay a long time to figure out what is really important to make a good marriage, that similar life styles and backgrounds are not it. Catherine had to learn that she was a good person, how to show love and except the fact that she was loveable. I really liked the humor that was in HUMMINGBIRD, and what a man Jesse was! Abigail was so "up-tight", it was such fun to see Jesse make her loose her control. But in the end, it was Jesse that had to admit she had got to him too.

This author is an amazing writer. I was so sad when she retired. I have read every book she has ever written. Hummingbird is my favorite novel ever. I have probably read it 20 times and each time I fall more in love with the story. A great buy!

Loved Suzy and Ed!!!

This is the second amazing book I have had the pleasure to read by Shaye Marlow. Suzy is Helly's best friend and she is plotting a more some with Helly's brothers. However her plans are destroyed when her home is severely damaged by the brothers. Here enters Ed. Sweet quiet soulful Ed. Or is he? Ed has a huge secret that Suzy finds out by using all her feminine wiles. To find out you have got to read this hot spicy book. These two heat up Alaska something fierce. Plus we get to visit with Gary and Helly which I dearly loved! Just wait til you read how hot that chair gets! 5++

A nice guy with a SECRET!

I read Two Cabins and One Lake and thoroughly enjoyed it. I then went and read everything I could by Shaye Marlow. I even sought her out on Facebook (can we obsessed! - LOL). When she asked for beta-readers for Two Captains One Chair, I said, "Sign me up!" I've now read it twice. Once prior to publication and then the final version that was published. I enjoyed Suzy's story. I really liked Ed. Nice guys are missing from modern romances. There are too many angsty-difficult-alpha-male love interests, but Ed was the complete opposite. Shaye did a great job of making him nice but with a SECRET; a really, really delicious secret that Suzy wanted to find out. This gave Ed depth that would have been missing if he'd just been NICE. I also liked Suzy, but Ed was definitely my favorite of the two.

My only complaint was the build up between Suzy and Ed. It took them a while to do the deed, as it were, but it was nice to catch up with the characters I loved from Two Cabins One Lake. I laughed out loud on more than one occasion. It was a very enjoyable read, and I didn't at all mind reading it twice.

Fun and Steamy

I've just had a couple of absolutely entertaining hours with a wonderful excursion through an Alaskan river adventure. There are feisty, beautiful women and hunks of hot men . The characters are so wonderful I want to hang out with them a whole lot more. Men in flannel, who can fix anything make me melt. I strongly recommend both books. Read and enjoy. I did
