I just couldn't relate to the main character being treated the way she was.

Even though this was free, I had a hard time enjoying this book. I just could not get past the main character sleeping with a stranger several times all the while knowing he is in a relationship with someone else. He really uses her and she seems okay with that!

good first book

Snowbound is a cute novel by Noelle Stevens and Christine Kersey. It is book one in their Ashley and Drake series. It is an easy read and although somewhat predictable, it is different enough to keep you reading. One is never sure what you think will happen will indeed happen.
Ashley is new to snow. She is on her way to a new job and a new town when she finds herself in a blizzard. She puts her car in a ditch in the middle of nowhere. She knows she can’t stay in the car without heat and with no provisions, so starts out walking back towards the last town she went through. She hopes to find a house for help along the way. She had hoped a new job and a new place would help her get over her boyfriend and their breakup. However, she didn’t plan on walking in a blizzard with little hope as a way to do that.
Drake is on his way to his cabin for the weekend. He knew he should have watched the weather better; but his cabin was well stocked and once he got there, he would be fine. Getting there was no problem with is car and with his knowledge of the area. However, he wasn’t planning on nearly running over a woman who is walking down the road in the blizzard.
Neither has an alternative than going to his cabin to sit out the storm. Ashley is concerned since she doesn’t know this man; but she has no choice. Drake isn’t keen on having his peace and quiet disrupted but he can’t leave her out here and it is too dangerous to take her into town. So they are stuck together in an isolated cabin in a blizzard with no phones.

I liked the story, but I didn't like the way Drake kept treating Ashley. He kept saying it wasn't serious with his girlfriend but wouldn't tell the girlfriend about Ashley

About the Author
ELMER TOWNS is Vice President and Dean of the School of Religion at Liberty University, which he co-founded in 1971 with Jerry Falwell. He teaches the 2,000-member pastor’s Sunday School class at Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, VA. Towns is a Gold Medallion Award-winning author and his books include Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough and How to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say. Elmer and his wife, Ruth, have three grown children.

Master the Basics - Here are the Basics!

Elmer Towns has given us an impressive collection of the basics of Sunday School teaching. This should not surprise us since he is called Mr. Sunday School. I attended a conference several years ago where Dr. Towns taught about teaching Sunday School. Much of the material from his session is in this small book. The reader will be pleased to discover that he gives pointers for teaching children, youth and adults - all levels of teaching are addressed in this book.
The Foreword of the book states Dr. Towns' qualifications for writing this book. He teaches a 2,000 member Sunday School class. He has taught adult, youth, and children's Sunday School classes in the past. He has taught in Sunday School conferences in each of the 50 United States. The man is sold on Sunday School.
Towns' begins his book addressing readers who do not feel they can teach Sunday School. He is convinced that most anyone can take an active role in the Sunday School ministry of the church. From there he looks at the teaching task itself. From lesson prep to relational evangelism, he covers all aspects of teaching (The chapters on Effective Discussion, Effective Lecture, & Effective Story are very good). He includes chapters on creating an inviting atmosphere for your class, understanding your learners, reviewing previous lessons, accountability, Scripture memorization, and lesson application. He gives the reader pointers for teaching children, youth, and adults.
Purpose! He focuses on the four-fold purpose of Sunday School - Reaching, teaching, winning, caring. He stresses the importance of mastering the basics and then applying the basics to one's teaching in a balanced way. He also stresses the importance of prayer in the life of the teacher.
One of the things that impressed me the most with Towns' book is that he does not focus on himself, or his own Sunday School teaching experience. Rather than speaking of himself, he refers the reader to the people from whom he learned (and applied) the skills necessary to be a strong Sunday School teacher/leader. He identifies success in others and how it applies to us. I was very impressed that Mr. Sunday School gave me his sources rather than himself. Does the word "humility" come to mind?
Two things surprised me in this book. The first is a negative; the second is a positive. First, Towns' mentions that there are a variety of learning styles, but he never expounds on them. That would fall more into the category of learning than teaching. However, it would have been nice to have a summary of this data. The second is that Towns' gives us a section on classroom discipline. This is better understood as classroom management, or classroom control, and is more often an issue with children and youth classes. Still, I was surprised that he covered the topic in this book.
Some readers may be put off by occasional advertisements for Gospel Light products. This did not bother me in the least. I can only recall two instances of this. Both were qualified - If you are not currently using an alternative product with similar features. It is almost inconsequential, but I thought I would mention it anyway.
In the final analysis, this is a very good, albeit brief, book on teaching Sunday School. It irks me fiercely to read someone say, "If you apply this book to your Sunday School class, you will grow beyond your wildest dreams." So, I won't say that. However, I must say that the application of Towns' instruction will probably help you to learn and grow as a teacher and the extent to which you learn and grow; your class should learn and grow too. I will probably get a copy of this book for all my Sunday School teachers. I think you will enjoy this book as well.

Good crash course book on Sunday school teaching

I bought this book for the Sunday school volunteers at our church because it's easy to read and practical. I don't necessarily agree with all the points of the book but it's a good basic book. The author does seem to come from a more fundamental background (see the chapter on "How to Lead a Student to Christ") and therefore may not work with all churches or you may have to talk theology with your Sunday school teachers but it's a strong book in other areas as well.

About the Author
Kristen Bowers is a former English teacher and the founder and President of Secondary Solutions. She has written over 15 books, including Literature Guides for Of Mice and Men, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and more, as well as two essay writing Guides: Essay Apprentice and Essay Architect. Good, but inadequate for the future....

I'm a high-school English teacher who not only loves "To Kill a Mockingbird" but also loves teaching it. Kristen Bowers' book is a great, comprehensive resource for the basics of the novel: it provides vocabulary words for every chapter (or group of chapters), as well as chapter summaries, essay topics, character analysis, and so on. In this way, it is a good investment.

However, the education system in our country is rapidly changing--the days of worksheets, vocabulary quizzes, and lectures are numbered, mainly because they no longer work. Students today are tech savvy, enjoy projects over lecture, and learn differently than their parents and peers, all of which make teaching "Mockingbird" even more enjoyable of an experience. (I've also noticed that, in allowing my students to be creative, my own skills as a teacher have been strengthened, and lesson-planning is now one of my favorite activities--an adventure, if you will, in personal creativity.) Unfortunately, Bowers' book offers nothing in terms of projects, activities, technological inclusion and digital storytelling, or making the book more applicable to real-life skills and situations. Her assessments are all test-based and drawn largely from standards, which do little to inspire learning in today's students and are often more of a burden to teachers than a tool.

I believe that students should enjoy reading, should be shown the value of a work of literature they might have otherwise overlooked, and should be able to see strong connections between a text and their lives. Sadly, Bowers' focus on classroom procedures of the past make it almost certain that your students will find little value in what is being taught. So, if you're a teacher who likes worksheets and tests, than you'll find great reward in Bowers' book. If you enjoy using a great work of literature to open up a new world to your students, however, this book is not for you.

Great Resource

I'm a relatively new teacher tackling TKAM for the first time this year. This collection of materials is superb. It's got the basics -- vocabulary and comprehension exercises -- but it also has things like a guide to idioms and allusions and activities that deal with legal lingo and process. The scope of materials offered makes it a wonderful tool to use with my honors class. Pricey, but well-done, and worth it.

A Lifesaver!

I am very happy with my purchases. I got both Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird and cannot believe all of the information, activities and ideas! Everything I need to teach my ninth graders the content standards, and the novels. I wish I had found these a few years ago--they would have been a lifesaver for me as a new teacher. These Literature Guides were recommended to me--and now it is my turn to do the same! Great product! VERY highly recommended.

About the Author

Bill Bolton is an international consultant in enterprise development and entrepreneurship. He has held a personal UNITWIN (UNESCO) Chair in Innovation and Technology Transfer. He was the Founding Director of the St John’s Innovation Centre in Cambridge and taught engineering at Cambridge University. Bill spent half his career in business and industry and half in academia. His other publications include: The University Handbook on Enterprise Development (1997) and jointly with John Thompson, The Entrepreneurs in Focus: Achieve Your Potential (2003).

John Thompson is Emeritus Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Huddersfield, UK and, part-time, Professor of Social Entrepreneurship at Anglia Ruskin University, UK. He has also held visiting appointments in Australia, Finland and New Zealand. John has published a number of titles, including the seventh edition of his textbook Strategic Management: Awareness and Change which is soon to be published and he has written a number of journal articles, especially on social entrepreneurship

Both Bill and John have been involved in business start-ups in many countries over a number of years and they have interviewed a diverse range of entrepreneurs.

I have used the previous two versions of this book to inform my course design for teaching and coaching entrepreneurs since 2001. The strengths-based approach is uniquely introduced and pioneered in this book. Understanding the strengths approach is vital for understanding how to blend and develop successful entrepreneurs and their teams. The diverse case studies of legendary, cultural, and 'dark-side' entrepreneurs are a great place to begin dipping into this book.

Mostly fluff

There are a couple of cool charts and useful things here. But much of the book is super short bios about entrepreneurs with only the pretense of structure. The bios themselves are strange. They appear to be taken from a children's encyclopedia except that they are full of typos. The Wright Brothers were in North Carolina not South Carolina.

About the Author
Geum-Hee Hong was born in Korea in 1977 and studied Visual Communication Design at the Hong-ik University in Seoul. She worked as a book designer and freelance illustrator in Seoul before completing a second degree at the Hochschule der Künste in Bremen, Germany. She is the author of Here and There (2008), a book about life in a foreign country. Geum-Hee lives in Frankfurt am Main.

Rebirthing Our Nation

Alienated Nation by Dr. Brooks Agnew is an urgent must read for every thinking person in the United States. Face it, if you weren't concerned about your rights or the State of the Union, you probably wouldn't be considering this book.
The American Republic has been lost. The glory of Liberty and Freedom are a vague memory in a land where filming public servants at work can now get you thrown in jail and quite likely roughed up on the way. In fact, with the NDAA in place American citizens can now be `disappeared', arrested and held without benefit of so much as a phone call, let alone due process of law.
This book is more than a history lesson, it is Citizenship 101 for all Americans. If I'd had a history teacher as interesting as Dr. Agnew I'd know a lot more history, and I would have a hunger for it. Brooks delivers a nearly gut wrenching call to arms. Not violent arms, but an intellectual call from the ghosts we really owe our freedoms to, people just like ourselves who would no longer stand by while losing rights, rights that were being stolen from them by their governments at the tip of a blade or the barrel of a gun.
Well before the Declaration of Independence was created, in most of our earliest `settlements' and townships, households were expected and required to participate in government in order to live within the boundaries of said township. Years of part-time service to the municipality were required to earn one's way into a good place to live. The sad state of our nation is a testament to just how poorly we've been doing in this area for the last 200 years. The "agency-government" as Brooks refers to it, couldn't have gained so much power without us turning our backs on our responsibilities.
Agnew's ideas may not be for everyone, but we desperately need to start the discussion of how to reclaim our Republic, our US Constitution and Bill of Rights. This includes returning to a much smaller federal government in favor of the State's rights.
The issues raised in this book are directly about where we live and how we're going to live or survive or die. There is a reason that America has been the dream for millions of people over the last 200 plus years...Freedom and inherent Liberty are the natural state of every human being.
Alienated Nation is the invitation to the table ...the banquet we must all attend if we wish to save our liberty, our country and possibly our very lives. It is a starting point to the discussion, and could culminate in the much-needed rebirth of the greatest nation on earth.

Dr. Agnew,

I had the good fortune of listening to you on Coast with George. Sir, you are one incredibly fascinating individual!!! I am writing you to thank you for writing Alienated Nation. I just purchased a copy of it along with the audio version. After listening to your argument as to how to fix this mess, your idea of having the states push back was the first time that I've heard of a reasonable solution to this. I also agree with you that those pushing for a "revolution" are gaining dangerous airplay. This is NOT the solution.

I found myself being labeled a "Prepper" after this movement gathered steam. I started accumulating food, water, gear, protection and plenty of ammunition 2 years ago after 2 situations crossed my path. Initially, while I slept, a group of thugs broke into my car and stole the contents within. Secondly, living in Arizona, during the housing ramp up, a truck broke one of the main gasoline pipes that supplies the greater Phoenix Metro area with gasoline. For about 3 days, every other gas station was out of gas. How I saw people react to this minor hiccup in supply got me to start thinking, "Imagine how these people would act if a real emergency transpired?"

I'm finally to the point where my checklist is complete and I can sleep at night.

What has depressed me over the past decade is the awful state of affairs our country is in and the, (until now) hopeless feeling of uselessness I've had about the solution. I, like you, am a solutions guy and the road this government has taken, especially over the last 10 years has got to be roadblocked.

Your constitutional solution totally makes sense, is reasonable, is doable, and from your information, has already taken hold in ~ 40 states.

Keep up the fight, Dr. Agnew!!! I wish you the very best of luck and success on your expedition and your electric truck company!

A must read for every person who has achieved political adulthood!

Shiff is a master at boiling down what's causing the problems we have today in America. Should be required reading in every school in this country! Of course, if you're of liberal ilk, you might find the book overbearing. You won't catch Schiff expousing any feel-good, or touchy feely crap that only exists in the minds of liberals. It's down to earth and right on target! I call it "reality-speak".
