Gr 9 Up—Seventeen-year-old Macy Lyons has been living with a terrible secret for the past 10 years. She copes by hiding the truth from everyone, including herself. At a party one night, she meets Sebastian, who recognizes a kindred, troubled soul. While Sebastian struggles with his drug addiction and going through rehab, Macy starts remembering the sexual abuse she suffered between the ages of seven and 12 at the hands of her cousin. It doesn't help that while she believes her parents know about the abuse, they continue to shower her cousin with favors and money. Macy struggles to deal with the memories on her own while dating her best friend, working at a summer camp with young children, and coping with her family's dysfunction. She is angry at everyone, especially herself, and only when she starts to break her silence does she realize that she needs help. As this story is told in first person, readers learn of Macy's experiences as she starts to face her memories and the sexual abuse she went through. Sebastian spends a good deal of the book in rehab, where Macy visits him. No mention of counseling or therapy is mentioned for Macy, however. Drugs, alcohol, and sex are referenced often throughout the story. While Macy's character and experiences are genuine, readers may have a hard time connecting with her until later in the novel. Though the protagonist finds peace with her past, the ending is a bit too neat to be wholly believable. Back matter includes resources on getting help for suicide, drug abuse, and sexual abuse. About the Author
Natasha Sinel is a writer of young adult fiction. She graduated from Yale University with a BA in English and from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business with an MBA. Born and raised in Washington, DC, she now lives in northern Westchester, New York, with her husband and three sons.

An important book that entertains and teaches.

This is an engaging read about a tough subject -- a child molested by an older person. But, it is an important read because the main character is immediate, real, true, strong, and vulnerable. She finds her way through a challenging sequence of errors, her own and others' -- sharing her thoughts about how/why she became the young woman she did. The ending is perhaps too neatly tied up, but -- on the other hand -- the plateau of solution could very well be temporary. AND, what the adults and friends FINALLY did and said were all the right things.
How the author combined a terrific story and fabulous characters with such a thoroughly honest and informative look at one of society's greatest problems (child abuse) -- I don't know -- but she did it and did it well.
I would recommend this for young readers and adults alike.

THE FIX is a strong debut novel from a great new voice in YA

Macy meets the mysterious Sebastian at a party, and the next day he disappears. When Macy finds out Sebastian has been checked into the Behavioral Health center at the local hospital, she decides to visit - and neither teen's life will ever be the same. An undeniable connection forms between them, one that neither teen can ignore despite the whirlwind of change happening to each of them. They help each other face their fears, their faults, and the deep truths that no one ever wants to share, and in the end, they find a fix - together.

With authentic writing and a solid plot, THE FIX is a strong debut novel from a great new voice in YA. The characters are complex and likable, and their stories will keep you turning the pages and wanting to know more. Keep a box of tissues handy, as this is definitely a tearjerker - in the worst and best kinds of ways.

In Nationalizing Iran, Afshin Marashi explores the changes that made possible this transformation of Iran into a social abstraction in which notions of state, society, and culture converged. He follows Naser al-Din Shah on a tour of Europe in 1873 that led to his importing a new public image of monarchy-an image based on the European late imperial model-relying heavily on the use of public ceremonies, rituals, and festivals to promote loyalty to the monarch. Meanwhile, Iranian intellectuals were reimagining ethnic history to reconcile “authentic” Iranian culture with the demands of modernity. From the reform of public education to the symbolism surrounding grand public ceremonies in honor of long-dead poets, Marashi shows how the state invented and promoted key features of the common culture binding state and society. The ideological thrust of that century would become the source of dramatic contestation in the late twentieth century.

Marashi's study of the formative era of Iranian nationalism will be valuable to scholars and students of history, sociology, political science, and anthropology, as well as journalists, policy makers, and other close observers of contemporary Iran.

The gist is that Iran followed the same pattern into modernity and nationalism that other nations did and only lagged a behind for a bit, ostensibly because Shah Naser al-Din delayed taking the same European tour that other national leaders did until 1873. The inspiration for most was Baron Haussmann's redesigned Paris, the wide boulevards, glassed in shops which, along with London and its Crystal Palace, created a grand sense of spectacle and public ceremony. It's a pattern well described in Walter Benjamin's Paris The Arcades Project, and widely emulated elsewhere in Cairo, Berlin, Istanbul, Baghdad, the far east and in the Americas. Marashi delights over how much Naser al-Din observed and learned about the effect of an engineered public space on public participation and the imagination.

Marashi's interest is in general legitimization of dynastic power as Iranian society moved into a shared modernity. One aspect of this was the widespread performance of the Ta'ziyeh, a Shiite passion play commemorating the martrydom of Imam Hoseyn during the month of Moharram, usually performed in public spaces or smaller theatres. To this end on a grander scale, the Takyeh Dowlat amphitheatre was built in the 1870s, seating some 20,000 was built, and attending a performance was considered to be a highly desirable social act at all levels of Qajar society.

A second pattern of modernization was the invocation of ancient traditions as idealized seed elements of a nationalist present. Inheriting an ancient culture was often used to validate the historicity of the modern nation-state. One intriguing relationship was the largely Zoroastrian-Parsi community of Bombay which, was regarded as a preserved model of ancient Iran. Another source Iranian intellectuals drew on the were writings of European orientalists who through their research and archeological studies knew more about these earlier periods than did most Iranians, for example their translation of Herodotus' History of the Persians. The Indo-European hypothesis of linguistic genealogy and ancient migration proved useful in establishing Iran's historic position in the pantheon of nations, while differentiating it from Semitic-Arabic culture.

The final pattern is the growth of public education. As happened elsewhere, French and British military advisers were brought in to train, educate and modernize the army and French Lazarists and American Presbyterian missionaries created schools for the education of Christian children along with the France based Alliance Israelite Universelle bringing modern western style education to the Jews, all of which tied in nicely to the nationalist project which required a literate and numerate bureaucratic elite. Reza Shah Pahlavi ascended the Peacock Throne in 1926. Under his rule the missionary aspect of the schools was curtailed, and by 1939 the schools were nationalized and taken over. The Ministry of Education was charged with creating a universal Iranian education and the public sphere poets such as Omar Kayyam and Ferdowsi's 1000 year epic poem the The Shahnameh was given special prominence, as was the visit of Bengali sage and Nobel Prize winning poet Rabindranath Tagore in 1932.

The account ends on the cusp of WW II, just before things start to get really interesting. A reasonable backgrounder to Iranian society and the politics of the State of the day. The audience would be almost entirely academic.

Unfortunately Badly Written

I looked forward to reading Ernie Glam's novelization of the Club Kids scene when I saw this as a recommended book, however, the typos and meandering prose were just the most obvious issues with this thin story.

Taking place in the excessive 1990s NYC Club scene, the two unlivable protagonists march along their destructive paths with little interior motivation or common sense. There isn't anyone to root for or any plot to keep the reader interested as we trudge toward an expected and less than thrilling conclusion

It's a shame, since Glam knows the scene and could probably evoke an insider view into the time and characters with some editing and more grounded motivations. As it stands, this novel left me sad that I spent any time reading about two guys who didn't seem to care about anything at all, thus neither did I.

About the Author
Patrick Hurley was born in Spokane, Washington in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a second major in philosophy and a physics minor) from Gonzaga University in 1964 and his Ph.D. in philosophy of science with an emphasis in history of philosophy from Saint Louis University in 1973. In 1972, he began teaching at the University of San Diego, where his courses included logic, philosophy of science, metaphysics, process philosophy, and legal ethics. In 1987, he received his J.D. from the University of San Diego, and he is currently a member of the California Bar Association. He retired from teaching in 2008, but continues his research and writing, including work on A Concise Introduction to Logic. His interests include music, art, opera, environmental issues, fishing, and skiing. He is married to Dr. Linda Peterson, who retired from teaching philosophy at the University of San Diego in 2015.

Still on chapter 1 but so far going well - easy to understand explanations. Two complaints: first, on page 30, a hypothetical school shooting is used to introduce the section on inductive and deductive arguments - I find this to be in extremely poor taste. Second, the homework assignments (which are lengthy to begin with) are set up in such a way that a great deal of writing/typing is required to complete them. It's taking me more time to type than it is to solve the problem. It would be nice if the e-book came with a code so I could download the homework pages as PDFs and then mark on the pages instead of having to type everything in.

A high Quality Material

A high quality material for the exams. This is the most authentic material for the Cissp.I wish I had this book earlier. I got this book 5 days to my exams.i took all the tests within the 4 days time frame and my average score was 69.23. Make sure you understand the material with a score of 75 % + before you take the test.

Question content seems to be of very high quality. In that I mean you will need to know the concepts behind the CBK material and how they should be applied in the real world, not just the technical. Another big plus in my opinion, the book comes with an access code (both print and Kindle versions) to utilize the same questions via an online test bank that keeps track of your scores, where you need to improve, etc. This is not the Sybex 7th test bank either, it is a totally new test engine/site with all of the questions contained in the book available as well as the two simulated exams (another highly suggested technique to gauge readiness and endurance). I haven't taken the exam yet but based on my studies these questions seem to be ideal for preparing for it as indicated in the product description.
