Vertical Thoughts: Morton Feldman and the Visual Arts, by Brian O'Doherty, Francesco Pellizzi, Dore Ashton, Juan Manuel Bonet

If any music can be said to be painterly, it is that of Morton Feldman (1926-1987), one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century. Feldman (1926-1987) was deeply immersed in the milieu of New York Abstract Expressionism, and found analogies in sound to the materiality of Pollock, the gravitas of Rothko and the hesitant, venturing brushstrokes of Guston. Taking as its departure point an exhibition Feldman curated in 1967 titled Six Painters, Vertical Thoughts considers the impact that postwar American art had on Feldman's own compositions. It features works by the titular six painters--Guston, Kline, Mondrian, de Kooning, Pollock and Rothko--and by other artists whom Feldman admired, such as Kitaj, Rauschenberg and Twombly. Also reproduced are works from Feldman's own collection, including his Middle Eastern and Asian rugs, archival photographs and ephemera, musical scores and record covers of compositions dedicated to artists such as Guston and Rothko, and interviews with and writings by Feldman himself.

A treasure
By Frank Rebro
Like the sensational coffeetable tome "Edgard Varese: Composer, Sound Sculptor, Visionary" by Meyer & Zimmermann (which would likely be of interest to anybody reading this review), "Vertical Thoughts" collapses a museum exhibit into book form. The basic aim of this book is to explore Morton Feldman's statement that painters influenced his musical art more than composers. Large in scale and immaculately designed, "Vertical Thoughts" contains high-quality images of key works by Philip Guston, Mark Rothko, William de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Cy Twombly and many others, all of which had a deep impact on Feldman's compositional approach. Also included are photographs of Middle Eastern carpets which held such fascination for Feldman, as well as plenty of (incomplete) Feldman manuscript scores.

What really glues everything together is the essays, some by Feldman himself and others by close relations of his or art critics. They reveal much about Feldman's thought processes and philosophies and paint a picture of a truly one-of-a-kind personality. There is even a book within this book: a complete scan of an important meditation on art called "Six Painters" written for a gallery exhibition curated by Feldman in the 60s. This contains one of Feldman's best essays, "After Modernism", in which he compares and contrasts Mondrian, Rothko and Guston.

A great companion to "Vertical Thoughts" is the smaller "Give My Regards to Eighth Street" (edited by Friedman), a collection of Feldman's writings. Both books should be regarded as essential by anybody trying to get a better understanding of either Morton Feldman's music or Abstract Expressionism in general.

As a book, "Vertical Thoughts" is faultless. Some of the essays may read a little on the academic or abstrusely metaphorical side, but unfortunately that seems to be the trend when it comes to grappling with this kind of art (if only it were possible to readily access "things in themselves" without academic analysis - this idea is a topic of one of Feldman's essays). Point being, nobody is likely to buy this book who wouldn't love it, but I guess lovers of avant-garde art and music who loathe academia or thinking should beware.

"Now that things are so simple, there's so much to do." - M. Feldman
