Good guide for new entrepreneurs
By BK
This is an awesome guide for budding entrepreneurs and start-up businessmen. There's everything you want to know to make your business a successful one. I loved the way the author sees things, I mean, customers, employees, market, etc. She says that customers are the first priority. Also employees are equally important. Bosses should listen to employees even if they have answers to all questions. It's really true. I am in a start up company and I think many of the views discussed here would be very helpful to me.

Secrets Revealed
By Neil Polon
I own just a small store and in my town competition is visibly tight. What I like about this book is that it presented a lot of ways and strategies on how you can scale up your business and overcome challenges that might arise. In addition, it's a book you need to have if you want to know the personal experiences of some of the famous and successful business owners and entrepreneurs. I learned a lot of things especially the kind of attitude one should have when aiming to succeed.

Lacks depth
By Greg B. Markham
This book may be better suited for one that has studied SQL previously, has a firm understanding of the basic principles and is just trying to refresh their memory. This book lacks any real in-depth exploration of the SQL elements that a novice user requires. There are other books by SAMS on the topic that would be a better choice.

The Other Side
By booknblueslady
It begins as an innocent story of two young brothers, Billy Parham, 16 and Boyd Parham, 14 giving food to an Indian. Billy and Boyd live on a ranch with their parents in New Mexico and are required to help with the work there. One of Billies tasks is to trap a wolf who is attacking and killing their cattle. Billy becomes intrigued by the primitive and wild creature, who seems to intelligently elude capture. He attempts to learn about the wolf by asking an old and learned man about the ways of wolves. As Billy begins to feel a kinship with the wolf he discovers it caught in one of his traps. He realizes that he cannot kill it and impulsively sets out for the Mexican border to return the wolf to where it came from. By crossing the border, Billy adventures into an nether world. It is not simply another country, but another reality.
We could easily call The Crossing a coming of age story, an adventure story, a quest or an epic poem, but it is all that and much more. As with any coming of age story, Billy Parham loss of innocence comes with a price of great consequence. Like an adventure story The Crossing is filled with action and unexpected situations. As with tales of quests as the Iliad and Gulliver's Travels we meet strange and interesting creatures along Billy's path. Like an epic poem The Crossing is filled with lyrical prose, both in Spanish and English.
Cormac McCarthy is one of the great American authors of the twentieth century and he proves it in once again in the Crossing the second book of his border trilogy. His prose is beautiful to read, with dialogue devoid of quotation marks and contractions missing apostrophes. He shifts from English to Spanish can be challenging to the non-Spanish reader. His scenes rich with descriptors can be stark and ruthless. The reader should be prepared to be shocked and moved.
Reading McCarthy comes with a price. After reading one of his books the reader feels changed, drained and at a loss. I, like Billy cannot retrieve my innocence. It disappeared when I went south of the border with him. As the Spanish Gypsy tells him
"We think we are the victims of time. In reality, the way of the world isn't fixed anywhere. How could that be possible? We are our own journey. And therefore we are time as well. We are the same. Fugitive. Inscrutable. Ruthless."
I cannot helped but be moved by Cormac McCarthy's work and The Crossing was perhaps the favorite, which I have read.

McCarthy proves that he does humorous as well as grim - a review of "The Crossing"
By The Invisible Pam
Well what can I say. More brilliant writing by a master AND for the first time I found myself laughing -a lot- while reading a McCarthy book. I know you might not believe me, but truly there are some extremely funny bits in this story. [My husband kept looking at me wondering if perhaps I had slipped the dusk jack for "The Crossing" onto another book. ]

And alas, lest you wonder, McCarthy was just leading me on. Up, up he took me. Wonderful story (expected). Humor (okay, not expected). But I was laughing and soaring and I was beginning to wonder if this book might be wildly different from the others. Certainly neither "The Road", nor "Blood Meridian" had me cackling: those were all grim fare. But rest assured. As high as McCarthy took me, that was where he dropped me from. It was a long plummet but finally I was back on familiar territory... heart torn out... feelings wrenched and twisted.

Five Stars. "The Crossing" is a McCarthy story that should make you laugh and then cry. Simply a wonderful tale with characters to care about. Exquisite prose.

Not his best work, not his worst work
By Robert Jacoby
This is not McCarthy's best work, but neither is it his worst work. It's the 2nd book in what is referred to as his "Border Triology," even though it's a completely different story than the first book in the "triology," All the Pretty Horses. I'll read the third book in the triology, Cities of the Plain, which picks up in 1952 with both main characters from the first two novels.

The Crossing is a good enough story. McCarthy's prose is powerful and carries the book where his actual story lags. The main character Billy Parham sets off to Mexico and ... (see other reviews for story details). Point is: McCarthy has poor Billy wandering all over the countryside, meeting mostly monosyllabic characters but occasionally meeting someone who has the mind of a Kierkegaard or Thoreau. Seriously. McCarthy has to do this because of his "God" pov. He never gets into any single character's head -- not really. I think I saw one "he thought" in the final 100 pages of the book. So, be aware of what you're getting into. The scenery/setting *is* a character. That's just McCarthy.

So: I admire McCarthy's prose style, very much, but at the same time I can say that the characters in this book read to me as either very flat or outrageously unreal. It's that "God" pov again. Because McCarthy the writer has so much to say, he must find a way to say it, either as "God" or through a character. He's best handling "God" through his own voice, because when he gives that voice to a character it becomes wildly unreal. There are, literally, pages and pages of text spoken by characters that could read from a philosophy textbook. Or Mann's Magic Mountain. If you want to go there, great! (As an aside, in Blood Meridian this works magically because those lines/philosophy are given to the judge, one of the greatest characters in all American literature.) Here, it doesn't always work, for me. By the end of The Crossing I felt that Billy Parham is a pretty dumb young man, indeed, almost deserving all he's gotten.

I recommend this book for any fan of McCarthy. And if you've not read any McCarthy at all, I'd recommend as a first read something else of his, like Child of God or No Country for Old Men, or even All the Pretty Horses. Savor his finest novel -- what I believe is one of the finest works of literature ever written: Blood Meridian.

PS: When reading The Crossing you'll want to have a computer nearby to look up both English and Spanish terms. Unless you read Spanish, you'll also want to have A Translation of Spanish Passages in The Crossing. Just search "mccarthy the crossing spanish words" and you'll find a pdf file for (most of but not all) the book's Spanish language text.

Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-being, by Martin E. P. Seligman

From the bestselling author of Learned Optimism and Authentic Happiness comes “a relentlessly optimistic guidebook on finding and securing individual happiness” (Kirkus Reviews).

“This book will help you flourish.”

With this unprecedented promise, internationally esteemed psychologist Martin Seligman begins Flourish, his first book in ten years—and the first to present his dynamic new concept of what well-being really is. Traditionally, the goal of psychology has been to relieve human suffering, but the goal of the Positive Psychology movement, which Dr. Seligman has led for fifteen years, is different—it’s about actually raising the bar for the human condition.

Flourish builds on Dr. Seligman’s game-changing work on optimism, motivation, and character to show how to get the most out of life, unveiling an electrifying new theory of what makes a good life—for individuals, for communities, and for nations. In a fascinating evolution of thought and practice, Flourish refines what Positive Psychology is all about.

While certainly a part of well-being, happiness alone doesn’t give life meaning. Seligman now asks, What is it that enables you to cultivate your talents, to build deep, lasting relationships with others, to feel pleasure, and to contribute meaningfully to the world? In a word, what is it that allows you to flourish? “Well-being” takes the stage front and center, and Happiness (or Positive Emotion) becomes one of the five pillars of Positive Psychology, along with Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment—or PERMA, the permanent building blocks for a life of profound fulfillment.

Thought-provoking in its implications for education, economics, therapy, medicine, and public policy—the very fabric of society—Flourish tells inspiring stories of Positive Psychology in action, including how the entire U.S. Army is now trained in emotional resilience; how innovative schools can educate for fulfillment in life and not just for workplace success; and how corporations can improve performance at the same time as they raise employee well-being.

With interactive exercises to help readers explore their own attitudes and aims, Flourish is a watershed in the understanding of happiness as well as a tool for getting the most out of life. On the cutting edge of a science that has changed millions of lives, Dr. Seligman now creates the ultimate extension and capstone of his bestselling classics, Authentic Happiness and Learned Optimism.

From Publishers Weekly
Seligman, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania and the guru of the "positive psychology" movement, abandons his previous emphasis on happiness, which he now views as simplistic, to examine how individuals might achieve a richer, multilayered goal: a life of well-being. He identifies four factors that can help individuals thrive: positive emotion, engagement with what one is doing, a sense of accomplishment, and good relationships. Those expecting a guide on how to achieve these goals will be disappointed; Seligman's approach is largely conceptual and empirical, although he has some useful things to say, such as how even soldiers with PTSD can be taught resilience to recover and even grow from their traumas, and how students of all ages can be taught focus, delayed gratification, and GRIT, a combination of drive and perseverance. But Seligman includes too much on the mechanics of conducting his studies. Also, he can be self-congratulatory regarding his own theory, and harsh and reductionist on traditional treatments ("psychology-as-usual—the psychology of victims and negative emotions and alienation and pathology and tragedy"). This is a potentially important book whose impact may be limited by its flaws. (Apr.)

Review
"Repaves the path to true happiness. A relentlessly optimistic guidebook on finding and securing individual happiness." –Kirkus

"Important" --Publishers Weekly

"I was immediately charmed... Seligman's intentions are admirable and exciting. He is consumed by his mission, which is to take psychology on from its traditional role in alleviating misery, and broaden it into positive psychology -- the entirely different art of teaching us how to be wiser, stronger, more generous to others, more self-disciplined, and more capable of dealing with difficulty and rejection... The book is full of nuggets about why positive approaches work."
The Sunday Times

A truly lost opportunity!
By Mehrad Ahari
The book starts brilliantly. Professor Seligman offers a revision to his famous theory of happiness and puts forward such a thrilling hypothesis, that I was hesitant to put the book down for a while.

However, and as the reader impatiently waits for the good doctor to explain his new theory in details - after all, it is easy to say you need "engagement" without defining what engagement really is and how it can be achieved - the book moves away from the message and turns into a boring, uninteresting manifesto in defence of positive psychology in general, and professor Seligman's credentials in particular.

He spends more time, trying to sell the idea than he does explaining it, as if he is making an extraordinary effort to convert unbelievers, than to preach to the already converted. Considering that the majority of those who would buy the book are among the latter group, I am baffled why he decided to turn this into a marketing material!

The book continues with more validating examples of positive psychology's successes, including two excruciating chapters about Seligman's work with the military. His repeatedly defensive arguments - specially those targeted at Barbara Ehrenreich and her likeminded entourage - are more suitable for an op-ed column than for a book of this calibre.

Toward the end, Seligman steps into an economic debate about the financial crisis, with such flimsy analogies that makes you wonder why this titan of the psychology should step out of his field of expertise so carelessly!

All being said, "Flourish" is a good book, and for those who are looking for fresh ideas, it does provide enough rich and valuable content to justify the time/money invested. It is just disappointing that the book stops short of being a ground-braking masterpiece, and settles for - well - a merely interesting read.

As for those who wanted to know more about Professor's new theory - myself included - "Flourish" is not the book we were waiting for. Let's hope his next book is.

A Passionate Defense of Something Important
By Book Fanatic
This is not a great book and it certainly has its flaws. However, it is a fairly well written book by Martin Seligman, one of the founders of Positive Psychology, and provides a passionate argument for his latest thinking on well being. He has changed his views over the last decade and he explains how and why in this book. The topic is important and if Seligman is right, he has made a major contribution to human flourishing with his work.

I read Barbara Ehrenrich's Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America a while back and I admit that it caused me to doubt to some degree Seligman's credibility. Shame on me and this book showed me how wrong I was to let her influence me in that regard.

If you are looking for a step-by-step recipe for flourishing, a traditional type of self-help book, you will not find it here. This book is much more theoretical and it spends a lot of time on the evidence and research for Seligman's views on well being. Having said that, you certainly can glean what it takes to flourish from reading it. I just want to make clear this book is mostly about theory and evidence and not about practical steps individuals can take on their own.

My biggest complaint about the book is that it spends too much time detailing specific projects the author is currently working on or has worked on in the past. He spends two full chapters on his work with the army. He does that to support his argument and to some degree I think to establish his credibility. While it is somewhat interesting, it's just too much.

If you are interested in a theory of human flourishing then I think this book would be a valuable addition to your library. I definitely recommend it.

A delicious appetizer but lacking the main course
By Peter Davies
Dr. Seligman starts off reviewing why he has moved on from authentic happiness to well-being. While not giving up on authentic happiness, he argues that while happiness is an important concept, the notion of well-being involves a number of factors in addition to happiness.
The book is comprehensive in nature, covering everything from happiness to sex in space to a denial that he ever helped the U.S. military develop torture techniques. That comprehensiveness, is however, the book's weakness as well as its strength. The book does start with ways to achieve well-being at a personal level, including some exercises to do so. Just as it began to get interesting on that topic, the author switches to introducing well-being into the education system and just as that becomes interesting he switches to well-being in the military and so on. He also has a tendency to go off on tangents throughout the book, further diminishing the book's focus. Because of this it was hard to discern the target audience of the book, with some parts being suitable to the lay-person while others were best suited to psychologists or similar professionals.
Having said all that, I did enjoy the book and found the occasional gem of wisdom. However as stated in a previous critique, this is not a self-help book and those wishing to learn how to flourish will be disappointed. I would recommend his prior book Authentic Happiness for those wanting to learn self-improvement. For those wanting an overview of positive psychology and the various settings it could be used in, the book does provide a basic overall introduction to the subject area. However it does not contain much information that would be useful to the lay-person or to clinicians and their clients.

The Ecology of Educational Systems: Data, Models, and Tools for Improvisational Leading and Learning, by Bruce D. Baker, Craig E. Richards

This informative, interesting book addresses those who need to understand educational data and its place in school leadership and decision-making. It provides a set of practical tools for data analysis and decision-making using spreadsheet software and system dynamic models. Examples of the use of the popular Microsoft® Excel, several system dynamic models created by ITHINK6.0, and an introduction to the development of dynamic simulations all contribute to the reader's understanding of the concepts presented. The use of real data ensures that readers receive a realistic “feel” for handling and manipulating information, guaranteeing an understanding of the broad diversity of financial, demographic, and economic situations that occur. Topics include: information sharing in schools, organizing and manipulating data, system linkages, system dynamics, applied systems thinking, and structured improvisation. An excellent resource for all school administrators, especially those who plan budgets and need to report to school boards and their communities.

ORIGINS OF THIS BOOK

We began conceptualizing this text around 1995, with the original intent of writing a follow-up to Craig Richards's 1987 book Microcomputer Applications for Strategic Management in Education. In the early stages, we began to realize not only how much the microcomputer tools of leadership had changed, but also the extent to which the general context for school leadership and the concept of leading complex dynamic organizations had changed.

Since 1995, an explosion of available electronic information and a proliferation of relatively inexpensive technologies for accessing, analyzing, and presenting data have occurred. Numerous books have been introduced that attempt to teach school leaders simple techniques of data analysis and presentation using available technologies such as spreadsheet, database, and statistical analysis software.

Although we believe it important that individuals have the opportunity to develop these skills, we believe it equally important to provide a mental model and disciplined approach for using such tools. The mental model we present is the Ecological Model of Leading and Learning. Our use of ecological is not to be confused with a literal definition of "environmental studies," but it is to be seen as a way of understanding schools and school systems as complex, interconnected ecological systems.

Our disciplined approach is collaborative improvisation. Whether jazz improvisation such as that performed by the small acoustic ensembles of the 1940s on 52nd Street in New York or baroque improvisation as performed by the great organ masters of the early 1700s, one element is critical to mastery of the art—practice. The great improvisers practiced for hours on end—decomposing music; learning to physically and musically perform a plethora of patterns, sequences, and tones; then recomposing and improvising with their newly expanded vocabulary.

Through the exercises in this book, we hope to provide students with comparable opportunities to practice decomposing and deconstructing data on schooling systems. Further, we hope that students may develop a sufficient analytic vocabulary to begin to recompose, reconstruct, and improvise with their new-tools.

ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK

This book is organized into six parts:

  • Part I—Setting the Stage: Part I provides an introduction to the ecological model and the improvisational approach. In chapter 2 we provide students with a tool—the policy options brief—for organizing and distributing information on their organization.
  • Part II—Using Data to Describe the Schooling Context: In Part II we introduce the student to a series of analytic tools in Microsoft Excel for organizing and presenting descriptive analyses of data. Each chapter concludes with a narrowly focused data set and a series of questions to be addressed with the data. This part concludes with a more comprehensive data set on international investment in education and student outcomes. Students are encouraged to write a policy brief on their findings from the data.
  • Part III—Searching for Relationships in Education Data: The third part introduces the student to more advanced analytic tools in Microsoft Excel. The primary emphasis is studying relationships between variables. Tools include group comparisons, scatterplots with trend-line analysis, and bivariate and multivariate regression analysis. The end of each chapter contains a narrowly focused problem set that applies the tools presented in the chapter to data ranging from student test scores across classes to state-level data on school funding and student outcomes. At the end of part III, we provide a complex and more comprehensive data set including various school resource measures and student outcomes measures. Students are provided guidance on the process of preparing analyses for a policy brief on relationships in data.
  • Part IV—Measuring Time and Change in Schools: This part introduces students to the analysis of change across time. Chapter 9 addresses conceptual issues involved in studying change across time; working with time-series data, including event analysis; and understanding short- and long-run cycles. Chapters 10 and 11 address more technical issues of calculating change rates and forecasting, and a special section on financial analysis, including amortization and present and future value functions. Part IV concludes with a simulation of various demographic, economic, and financial changes occurring across time in Mission Valley Springs Unified School District. Students are encouraged to write policy briefs in which they identify important changes in the district's internal and external environment, including emergent fiscal stresses.
  • Part V—System Dynamics of Schooling: This part introduces system dynamics as an interconnected and dynamic framework for analyzing schools and school systems. Chapter 12 provides a transition from data-driven analysis to model-driven analysis. The example of student enrollment forecasting is used to show students how to transition from the spreadsheet approach of cohort survival forecasting presented in part IV to conceptualizing and eventually simulating enrollment changes across time as a series of interconnected stocks of students in grade levels and flows of students from grade to grade. Chapter 13 integrates systems modeling techniques with systems thinking concepts, including feedback loops and classic archetypes of organizational behavior such as those discussed by Senge (1990) in The Fifth Discipline. Downloadable system dynamic models of the archetypes are available on the book Web site. Part V concludes with a series of more complex, comprehensive case analyses, ranging from the unintended consequences of class size reduction in California to achieving fiscal parity in New Jersey.
  • Part VI—Pulling It All Together: The book provides an opportunity for synthesis with part VI. This part guides the student through a comprehensive, ecological analysis of his or her organization by using the various data and model-driven strategies presented throughout the text.
USE OF THIS BOOK IN A COURSE

For the past few years, this book has been piloted in a course titled Analysis of Administrative Problems at the University of Kansas, Lawrence and Overland Park, and in The Ecology of Data-Driven Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University. We realize that too many data and problem sets are included in this book for you to have your students use them all for preparing full-blown policy briefs. Both of us (the authors) use chapter problem sets as lab activities to familiarize students with ways to apply the various tools to the given data and to practice going through the developmental process of preparing a data-driven policy analysis. Students then choose two of the three available part simulations (Simulations II, III, and IV), for which they prepare comprehensive policy analyses and briefs.

A note of caution: The first go-round on any such activity can be a demanding and even somewhat frustrating process because students are applying new analytic methods, sometimes using new technology and preparing documents in a novel format and writing style. However, our experience has been that, despite having initial difficulties with a steep learning curve, students rapidly grow and develop skills as they progress through the activities.

THE COMPANION WEBSITE

The Companion Website that accompanies this book is central to accomplishing your teaching objectives. In fact, think of the Companion Website as the primary instructional resource and the book as a guiding handbook. If one objective is to develop and refine analytical skills, students must practice these skills over and over. The Companion Website and book offer a practice data set and problem for each chapter of sections II through V, as well as simulations at the end of sections II, III, and IV Students can readily access data, models, and documentation for all-these chapter problem sets and section simulations on the Companion Website at http://www.prenhall.com/baker .

Diverse types of data and problems are presented. Data range from the classroom level to the international level, and from student performance data to financial, demographic, and economic data. Many of the data are derived from actual situations, including student performance and economic data on 13 countries from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and elementary and high school data published annually by the state of Vermont. Additional data sets can be downloaded from the Data and Models Support link on the Companion Website.

By flashgordon
E.T. Bell was on a roll when wrote his histories of mathematics. Men of Mathematics, Development of Mathematics, and Magic of Numbers all came around the same time. He must have used the same notes! Men of Mathematics and the Development of Mathematics are contrasts, but mathematicians will even say his Development of Mathematics is not technical enough. But Men of Mathematics has a little more relation to 'Magic of Numbers.'

Both 'Men of Mathematics', and 'Magic of Numbers' relate past mathematicians and mathematics to modern ideas. 'Men of Mathematics' is more about as many mathematicians as E.T. Bell wished to stuff in one volume(he missed plenty; David Hilbert, Sophus Lie, Frobenius, Carmille Jordan to name a few), but he mentions who Dedekins is a modern Eudoxus, and Kronecker is a kind of Zeno(i'm thinking more like Brouner). 'Magic of Numbers' relates ancient philosophies of mathematics with modern, but he does more.

E.T. Bell uses Plato and Aristotle writings almost like Pauline epistles into the birth of Christianity. He's trying to see what he can see in terms of the birth of mathematics, and the philosophy of mathematics, through the writings of Plato and Aristotle. He gives biographies of Thales, Anaxagoras, Pythagoras, and makes educated guesses on various issues with their lives. E.T. Bell gives some details on these guys you might not find elsewhere, but in some cases like Anaxagoras and Empedicles, he misses a few things; he even says he chooses to not get into some details; I think he should have. For instance, the fact that Anaxagoras had some logical reasons for thinking of evolution of life, and Empediclies discovered the idea of air. See Carl Sagan's account in chapter/episode 7 of his Cosmos(or, you could read "Sleepwalkers" by Arthur Koestler, which is where Carl Sagan gets his ideas from).

He mentions the idea that Christianity is midrashing the old testament; this idea is considered a new exciting idea in todays New Testament comparative religion researchers - see The Jesus Puzzle by Earl Doherty for a quick introduction.

I'd like to mention that James Frazer in his "Golden Bough" finds much interesting relation between magic and religion. In it, he indirectly uncovers the idea of sungods though his gods of the seasons. He uncovers much in terms of the idea of the evolution of mankind's idea of figuring out how the universe works. At one time, magic and religion were the scientific ideas. People have argued that this is demeaning to religions and cultures based on them. In science, disproving an idea is o.k. but we're not allowed to do so in the field of religion. But, the religious are allowed to disprove one another and argue against science. Kind of interesting. I mention this because this book also tries to understand the evolution of mathematical thought form pre-mathematical thought, through the mathematical perspective. Basically, both mythology and mathematics are analogies; but, one is constructive, and the other is not. I find in my explorations of this relation suggested by Jacob Bronowski for instance in his "Science and Human Values", that mathematics is a clean break despite this common trait(analogy). The Golden bough doesn't note this connection; E.T. Bell's "Magic of Numbers" does. They are complementary to those who want to understand rationally the evolution of mankinds explorations from ignorance to being able to figure out the universe. And, as E.T. Bell shows in his "Magic of Numbers", the mythicists don't believe in observation/experimental, or even logical proof confirmation of their ideas. They're effort is to hide their ideas far away from being able to figure anything out. There's clearly a very large social problem here.

About mathematics and philosophical thinking
By Haran
This book is a fascinating journey into the history of science and the world of mathematics and numbers and their connection with philosophical thinking. The fundamental argument is whether the nature of existence can be explained by deductive reasoning, as Pythagoras and Plato believed, or via experimentation, and also whether mathematics is an invention or a discovery.

The review begins with Pythagoras and Plato who recognized mathematics as an expression of the divine principles of creation and order. Subsequently this view became corrupted through the dogmatization of Christianity. Then a major shift occurred through Newton's work to understand nature via experimentation, and mathematics was relegated to backing it up. This change is seen as the cause of the industrial revolution. The next major turn about happened as a consequence of quantum physics which necessitated mathematics to dominate again not only because mathematics can explain complex issues in a comparatively simple and concise manner but also because experimental verification has become extremely difficult if not impossible. However, although mathematics has assumed the key role again, the author points out that it is now devoid of spiritual meaning.

The intriguing aspect is though that many aspects of the sub-atomic world were predicted by spiritual sources, and multidimensionality and multiple universes were in the spiritual vocabulary long before science stumbled upon their existence. Unfortunately, the author gives no credence to this. On the contrary he is often sarcastic and at best displays an amused tolerance as exemplified in his belief that 'everything is number' is possibly the most mischievous misreading of nature in the history of human errors. He also believes that Pythagoras' and Plato's ideas were directly responsible for retarding the start of modern science.

Nevertheless, the author presented a brilliant analysis of core problems of existence, and although it is one sided in some ways, we can easily fill in the gaps ourselves and allow spiritual and scientific thinking to support each other (this may horrify the author though).

I love this book. I bought the paper copy years ago. My daughter is learning numbers and I've been slipping some of these techniques into her learning. These tips and tricks really help kids and adults with working with numbers!
