I don't particularly like them but son loves them!

The Captain Underpants books were not my favorite books, coming from a perspective of a parent. Much of the content is crude, talking about pee, poo, boogers, and whatnot. But that part is bearable, because it's also what my son finds so funny with the book. The aspect that irks me the most are the comics, where half of the words are misspelled. Sure, I know that the comics are supposed to be written by a child, but I really do not want my son becoming confused with spelling words incorrectly. I have explained that the words are spelled as a child would sound them out, and he understands that.

If I was judging this as a parent, I would give it 3 stars. But I have to give it 4. Why? Because my son, WHO HATES TO STUDY or read, will on his own volition, pick up these books from our huge library of books, and sit down for an hour reading this, while laughing out loud hysterically. He will read some of these books like a maniac, reading it from cover to cover, until it is finished. This is a normal 7 year old boy who, remember, hates to study. He finds the panorama (where you flip the pages and the pictures move) fascinating, and will flip back and forth many times, laughing like a demon to himself.

So, if Captain Underpants can get my son to do any reading at all, I have to rate it higher and give props to Dav Pilkey.

By the way, this set is a great value, because I bought the both of the 3 set books at around sixteen to twenty dollars a piece, and here you would get the whole collection, including the newest book that just came out this summer 2011.

I was pleased with the fast delivery. The quality of the books was fine and my only wish is that this set would have come with a book holder for all of the books of the set to fit in like many other book sets have.

Wish my older son had read this series...

First let me say that I am not a fan of bathroom humor. That being said, I could not be more appreciative of this series. My 7 year old son loves them and has become an avid reader because of these books. I reluctantly read the books with him and have since become a huge fan of the stories, myself. But before I can tell you that story, I have to tell you this story. :-)
My older son is not much of a reader. He never found a genre that captivated him. Consequently, getting him to read anything is always a struggle. But since my younger son has read all of the Captain Underpants books plus Super Diaper Baby and Ook and Gluk, he has become an enthusiastic reader!
I prefer Captain Underpants over the others because the vocabulary is more demanding. We can't wait until the 11th book comes out!

R is a rapidly evolving lingua franca of graphical display and statistical analysis of
experiments from the applied sciences. Currently, R offers a wide range of functionality for nonlinear regression analysis, but the relevant functions, packages and documentation are scattered across the R environment. This book provides a coherent and unified treatment of nonlinear regression with R by means of examples from a diversity of applied sciences such as biology, chemistry, engineering, medicine and toxicology.
The book begins with an introduction on how to fit nonlinear regression models in R. Subsequent chapters explain in more depth the salient features of the fitting function nls(), the use of model diagnostics, the remedies for various model departures, and how to do hypothesis testing. In the final chapter grouped-data structures, including an example of a nonlinear mixed-effects regression model, are considered.
Christian Ritz has a PhD in biostatistics from the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University. For the last 5 years he has been working extensively with various applications of nonlinear regression in the life sciences and related disciplines, authoring several R packages and papers on this topic. He is currently doing postdoctoral research at the University of Copenhagen.
Jens C. Streibig is a professor in Weed Science at the University of Copenhagen. He has for more than 25 years worked on selectivity of herbicides and more recently on the ecotoxicology of pesticides and has extensive experience in applying nonlinear regression models. Together with the first author he has developed short courses on the subject of this book for students in the life sciences.

A Slim Volume, but Useful

Nonlinear Regression with R (NRwR) offers an example driven tour of R's base nonlinear regression tool, nls(). As you can glean from the table of contents, NRwR covers nonlinear models, generalized linear models, self-starting functions and model diagnostics (tools for inference as well). It does so in ~113 pages. BE WARNED. The book looks short because it is. Most of the material is helpful, but you are paying close to 50 bucks for a relatively short book.

High points:

-Model diagnostics are handled fairly well. The book walks you through checking for heteroskedacity, writing a function to test a hypothesis and dealing with mis-specified errors.

-Examples abound. If you read this book as it was intended, you will download the nlrwr package and follow along as the authors walk through datasets. Each page has sample code allowing you to reproduce the graphs and results in the book.

-Length can be an advantage. If you aren't particularly interested in the theory behind nonlinear regression, you wont be encumbered by it here.

-The bibliography is broken down by theme and is genuinely helpful.

Low Points:

-As reliant as the book is on nls(), I would love to have seen more digging into the peculiarities of this function. Chapter 4 is devoted to nls(), but it is a mere 16 pages, one of which is basically the gist of ?nls. I know it is beyond the scope, but I would have been excited to see more detail on nls so we can use the output from a nonlinear least squares problem as a building block to a larger function.

- organization for the book is a bit odd. The introduction is comprised of three examples of nonlinear regression in the field. It is about six pages and seems to have been cobbled together. The book would have been better served by a more thorough introduction.

-The topics covered are relatively narrow.

-Length is a serious factor.

All in all this is a good effort which would be easily 4 or 5 stars at a lower price point. I'm happy I bought it, but if your budget is constrained and you are forced to choose between this and another book on R's internals, think hard about the pros and cons.

Consise and to the point... but do not expect to learn R or the nuts and bolts of non-linear regression

This book is pretty concise and to the point: It will show you how to do non-linear regression with R but will teach you neither. If you are familiar with non-linear regression methodologies and have some familiarity with R, this book will have you using R for your non-linear regression needs in a snap. In this sense the short length and limited scope are an asset.

If you are not familiar with the theory behind non-linear regression I would certainly recommend complementing this book with a more in depth treatment of the subject. I found Bates and Watts to be very balanced in terms of presenting important information without being overwhelmingly mathematical. On the other hand, if you never used R, then you will need to learn it elsewhere as the book assumes certain level of familiarity with the environment.

In short, the book is a glorified tutorial on nls() and got me doing NLR in R pretty quickly. In this sense I recommend it and if price is not an issue I would think it is probably a good reference to have around. However, as other reviewers pointed out, the price seems disproportionate especially considering that there are other resources on-line that will do the trick. The price would be fairer if the book included tutorials in other related areas such as Bayesian inference with non linear models or an expanded treatment of non-linear mixed effects models, just to throw in some ideas.

Great Kickstart

This is a neat book. It's a great way to get an introduction to nonlinear regression via the use of R. It does not require any sort of heavy-hitting theoretical background; you can find other books (e.g., Seber and Wild) to fill in the details. By carefully studying the examples and the R code, one can definitely learn a few things that will serve as grist for future reading and applications. It's small size probably means you'll actually read it and suits its intended purpose!

Good basic review book

I got this book for two reasons. My fifth grade granddaughter is a wonderful writer and just recently was offered a place on the spelling team so I wanted something to help her become an even better writer and of course something to help with spelling. My second reason is that I'm thinking about going back for another Masters and the program I'm interested in requires another GRE test as my previous ones are way too old. :( Badly in need of a refresher.

It is always nice to have a study buddy even one that is ten! She makes me think about the verbal sections more than the book does! The book is a very good refresher for the the types of questions you are going to get, but I am pretty sure the GRE verbal sections that I took were much much tougher than the questions/examples this book supplies. It does have, if you are studying for a spelling bee, a great selection of tough words to master.

The book does approach the GRE's via the Kaplan method. I have never used a Kaplan study book before, but the method is fairly easy to master. The chapters have a highlighted box with the method's techniques listed for easy referral. The instructions, examples and explanations are written simply and understandably.

I know way back when I took the GRE's I used several books and I would still recommend this technique if you are doing a self-study for the GRE rather than taking a course. Each author/presenter has a slightly different take and well, you can never be too prepared.

Way too easy

The GRE is a daunting test, but workbooks can make you feel less nervous about it if you know what to expect. For a true replicate of what the GRE test is like, I would have to recommend purchasing the official tests from ETS because they are the official test writers and would provide the most accurate representation of the test.
Other workbooks are great too, but the Kaplan verbal workbook falls a bit behind the competition. The exercises are much easier than the actual test and the questions found in the ETS official book, so it makes this Kaplan workbook almost worthless. There are some good sections, like the root words and vocab, but you can find GRE vocab on quizlet.
I wouldn't use this book myself for prepping for the GRE, but it is not absolutely useless since it does represents all the easier questions on the GRE.

Concentrates in on verbal in a very compact way.

Prior to receiving this volume, I had recently ordered the overall Kaplan GRE book as a way to familiarize my test and, hopefully, boost my score. Luckily, this book and the GRE Premier book I ordered don't have a lot overlap. The Premier book contains more of a broad overview of the test before thrusting you into sample exercises and quizzes. This book contains a lot more in the way of study materials for the verbal section, including word groupings that can easily take the place of flash cards and lots of sample Q&A material and sample essays showing you good work. I think if you feel the verbal area of the test could be an issue for you this volume could be a good investment. Likewise, the math one if you feel that way about it.

Personally, I've opted for more math aides because, while my major is in accounting, I have left behind a lot of my algebraic principles for more straight-line calculations

Iconic artwork from one of science fiction's premiere illustrators

John Harris and his iconic paintings have been a part of the science fiction community for nearly four decades. He brings an impressionistic sensibility to his bold, massive space landscapes that make each piece stand out as a distinct work of art. Generations of readers have discovered his work because of the science fiction novels graced with his creations. Harris continues to be a prolific creator whose work resides on the covers of some of the biggest names in SF literature. This new retrospective is a welcome body of work and should be added to your collection the moment it is released.

John Scalzi provides the foreword to this collection of art, which is fitting given the volume of work Harris has created for John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War series over the past decade, including 13 original works to go along with each chapter, released weekly in 2013, for The Human Division.

In it, Scalzi touches on the inspirational power of works of art, giving the example of how John Harris’ painting chosen for the cover of The Ghost Brigade, stirred his imagination at a time when he had hit a roadblock in the execution of that very novel.

John Scalzi states, “John’s artwork, like that of Richard Powers or Frank Kelly Freas, is iconic, and also Bookstore Iconic–which is to say you can see it from across a bookstore, and when you see it, you know what you’re going to get in the pages of that book: A damn fine read that takes you places you can’t go any other way.”.

I find that an apt description because, unlike some cover artists, John Harris is not creating a painting to illustrate specific scenes in a novel but is instead creating a work whose scope and scale evokes some sense of expectation and emotion. His paintings inspire daydreaming about the places they depict.

The title of John Harris’ first art book is Mass, and it is a fitting title given that so much his work centers on great hulking ships, buildings, and planets and how these massive elements exist in relation to one another. In this new collection, Harris talks about how scientific concepts of mass and gravity and spatial relationships are important to him in his work and yet he will at times bend, or violate, those concepts in one way in order to promote them in another.

The Art of John Harris: Beyond the Horizon covers some thirty-five plus years of his career and showcases not only paintings used as cover images for a variety of science fiction novels, but also works he has created over the years for an ongoing story in images that he regularly adds to, as well as paintings inspired by NASA images of Earth from space and other non-book-related works.

While the look Harris achieves is accurately defined as “iconic”, this book shows the full range of his work, including some of the early roughs and pastel sketches that provide the foundation for his finished paintings. This glimpse at the process is insightful, especially as those roughs are also small works of art in and of themselves.

I became aware of the work of John Harris at an early age and have been a fan from the first time I laid eyes on one of his book covers. His work for authors like Ben Bova, Orson Scott Card, John Scalzi and Jack McDevitt cover many years of creative effort and he continues to provide cover work for these authors today. I personally value cover art consistency across book series and I give kudos to the book companies and their creative directors who continue to employ John Harris to create beautiful art.

When I think back to what attracted me to science fiction as a child, and what continues to spark my interest today, it is the sheer enormity and vastness of space. Our solar system is enormous, and that is but a speck of dust in comparison to the greater universe. John Harris captures that sense of the awesomeness of space and does so with rich, sometimes strikingly colorful images. Titan Books has created a wonderful tribute to John Harris’ career to date; it is a lovely volume worth adding to any collection of art books. The release of the book is timely given that John Harris is on the shortlist for Best Professional Artist at this year’s Hugo Awards in London. The May 27th release provides a gorgeous visual reminder of his talent and several of his eligible works from last year are included in this volume. As John Harris has strongly influenced my imagination over the years, I am pleased to see his work presented in a high quality volume at a price that everyone can enjoy.
