About the Author

Francesca Italiano is the Director of the Italian Language Program at the University of Southern California.  She has a Ph.D. from University of California, Los Angeles in Nineteenth Century Italian Literature and an M.S. from USC in Applied Linguistics. She is the coauthor of the literary reader Incontri Attuali and the author of the second edition of the intermediate Italian textbook, Crescendo!  She is currently working with the USC Language Center in the development of the VIE (Virtual Italian Experience) video game, which is based on Percorsi. The VIE project is being funded by a two-year NEH grant.  

 

Irene Marchegiani, Professor Emerita of Italian Language and Literature at California State University – Long Beach, is currently Coordinator of Student Teaching for European Languages at the State University of New York – Stony Brook, where she teaches second language acquisition methodology courses as well as courses in European Studies.  At CSULB, from 1985 to 1999 she was the Director of the Italian program. Professor Marchegiani has taught Italian language, literature, and culture at all levels.  She has written articles on Giacomo Leopardi and on contemporary Italian poetry, with a particular emphasis on women writers.  She edited the volume of poetry Land of Time (Chelsea Edition, 2006) by Luigi Fontanella and co-edited The Poetics of Place: Florence imagined (Olschki, 2001).  She has conducted research and published articles on Italian epic poems about Cristopher Columbus and on second language acquisition. In collaboration with Professor Charles Jernigan, she has translated Torquato Tasso’s Aminta (Italica Press, 2000), which was awarded the prestigious “Diego Valeri” Monselice prize in 2002. She has co-translated other volumes of poetry including The Star of Free Will by Maria Luisa Spaziani. Professor Marchegiani has published several of her poems in various poetry journals, in Italy and in the U.S.A., and in 2004 she published La vita in cerchio, her first collection of poetry. She is member of the editorial board of the literary journals Gradiva and Journal of Italian Translation. With Francesca Italiano, she published the literary reader Incontri Attuali and the intermediate Italian textbook Crescendo.

Not bad for an Italian textbook. I don't have much standard for comparison. Read assigned sections an made an A in the class. It is written quite clearly. However, I feel that it switches to givingi nstructions o exercises in Italian too early.

THIS BOOK IS GREAT FOR BEGINNERS LIKE MYSELF. I BOUGHT IT FOR CLASS AND IT HAS DEVELOPED MY LANGUAGE SKILLS IN ITALIAN. IT HAS GIVEN ME KNOWLEDGE IN THE CULTURE AND THE FOODS OF ITALY. LOVE IT

A Terrible Textbook

I have been using this book for over a year. It is absolutely terrible. The approach is is to teach by omission with incomplete examples and explanations, leading to confusion on the part of the student. For instance, one rule in Italian is that you attach reflexive, direct object and indirect object pronouns to the end of the infinitive form of a verb. One does not get an inkling that this is a general rule until the special cases of prima di + infinitive and dopo + past infinitive are introduced in Chapter 11 ! The rule is mentioned for direct object pronouns in Ch 9, but not mentioned at all for indirect object pronouns in the same chapter. There are a multitude of other examples of poor and incomplete explanations.
The exercises in the accompanying software are riddled with mistakes and inconsistencies. And, you can enter a perfectly correct answer in an exercise and it will be wrong .... you get a zero .... if it is not the answer the software expects. Even for instances where the book explicitly tells you that there are two correct ways to implement a certain grammatical construction.

Disappointed

Like the reviewer, Jonathon, I had high hopes for this book but I was disappointed. I was looking for a gentle introduction to Morphy but this just doesn't cut it.

The pseudo- or minimalist algebraic notation is extremely distracting away from a board and a nuisance at the board. There are no capture indications nor check indications. This is a serious distraction when trying to focus on the game content - it's not like somebody at the target level can afford a lack of focus. The most disturbing thing is that this is so totally unnecessary - it's like a personal challenge to the reader. Hasn't regular algebraic or figurine notation been established as the standard for decades? If the author wants to include perverse visualization exercises in a book then let him write another one and tell the buyer.

I could get past that if the book was appealing in other ways, but it's just not good enough to overcome the nuisance factor and I abandoned it. I've moved on to Beim and I'm already seeing more benefit, even though it's much harder. Skip this one.

Lots to Learn from Morphy

I bought this book after reading the recommendation list of Dan Heisman and because I like Morphy's style of super rapid development, not to mention brilliant attacks.

The book is well written, with not too much commentary, so as not to get bogged down in endless variations. Thirty basic chess principles are put forward (10 opening, 10 middlegame and 10 endgame). Morphy games are then discussed with a focus on the principle being illustrated (one principle per chapter with a few games to illustrate it).

The method of teaching chess principles with real games is an excellent way to learn, at least for me. After going through about half of the book, it becomes not too difficult to guess what Morphy's next move will be as you will be well acquainted with his style.

My only gripe is the non-standard notation, which takes some getting used to. I am not sure why the author abandoned standard notation but it is a pain to read his bare bones notation if you are used to standard algebraic notiation. Hence, only 4 stars.

Great Player, Good Games, Okay book.....

I am still new to the study of chess so my opinion could change with hindsight in a couple of years, but I have to say this book was just okay. I was really excited when I ordered the book, as it was going to be my first game collection focused on one person. (I have gone through Chernev's Logical Chess, which obviously has games featuring many different players)

It has been fun to play over Morphy's games but the book's layout is a little awkward to me and the annotations are somewhat dry, especially for a book that acts as if it is going to be an instructional book.

I know that it has been a worthwhile experience to go through Morphy's games but I am glad to be done with this book and looking forward to studying some Tarrasch and maybe some Tal.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I will say that at this VERY EARLY stage of my chess study, I seem to prefer playing over games that are strategic struggles instead of quick and flashy "brilliancies". The games I really enjoyed in this book were the few that took Morphy awhile to win (and even the one he lost to Anderson!!)

This IS a worthwhile book to study just because of Morphy's tactics and sound principles, it just hasn't gotten me as excited about chess as some other ones I have worked through.

I am even more convinced that this book is over rated! I have played through some other game collections and have a little more experience under my belt, and these annotations are just not that informative. I have recently gone back and begun to analyze some games I have played over per my coaches instructions. I went back to a few of these Morphy games and the author's annotations just don't give you anything to go on. I am thinking there has to be a better Morphy collection out there..there just has to be! I have changed my rating from three stars down to two stars! If you want to get game collections that have truly instructional annotations I recommend the following books: Chess: The Art of Logical Thinking, Anything by Paul Keres (especially his own game collections), anything by Chernev and Best Lessons of a Chess Coach.

About the Author
Richard "Dick" Briefer was an American comic-book artist best known for his various adaptations, including humorous ones, of the Frankenstein monster. Under the pseudonym Dick Hamilton, he also created the superhero team the Target and the Targeteers for Novelty Press. Dick Briefer studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan and debuted in comic books in 1936. In December of 1940 Prize Comics #7 first published Briefer's eight-page feature "New Adventures of Frankenstein", an updated version of the much-adapted Frankenstein monster created by Mary Shelley in her 1818 novel Frankenstein. The author lives in Hollywood, Florida.

The Evolution Of A Classic Comic Book

It's been said before that Yoe Books has set the standard for deluxe reprints of vintage comic books, but it bears repeating. In Dick Briefer's Frankenstein all the Yoe trademarks are there: excellent reproduction from the original printed pages, high-quality paper and deluxe hardcover binding, and a beautifully designed package. As usual, there's a nice historical essay, this time comprising 16 pages of facts and observations about the comic book and its creator with lots of impossibly rare art. In addition, there's a nifty die-cut cover that lets the monsters eyes show through and gives a nice surprise when you open it. I don't see how it could have been done better.

The comics themselves are particularly fascinating because they show the evolution of the character from story to story, year to year. Starting in 1940 when the American comic book was still in its infancy, the earliest story is a crudely drawn, fairly straight retelling of the Mary Shelley tale. By 1941 the art has improved markedly, but it's still in the gothic horror genre. The next one is drawn a little differently yet. Briefer's style changes with virtually every story. It's as if he was trying not to use the same style twice!

By 1945 the comic undergoes a complete metamorphosis, changing from straight horror to comedy-horror. At this point the character of Frankenstein's monster has more in common with Herman Munster than with the comics from just a couple years earlier. Briefer uses a much looser line and the stories are charming and silly. In 1952's story we see another transformation back to horror, but this time with carefully rendered scenes of violence and mayhem as was the trend in the 1950s. Watching the evolution of Dick Briefer's Frankenstein between these covers is a microcosm of the history of comics, from the Golden Age into the era of pre-code horror and crime comics that almost ended the industry. (If the series had continued into the Sixties I can imagine the Frankenstein monster in a mask and a cape.)

Various Collections highlight different aspects of Briefer's various takes on the Monster

Amazon has the various collections of Briefer's Frankenstein work listed as different editions of the same book but they are not and each is a very different collection. Indeed one can not review each collection separately due to this mix-up. So below are to be found details on each one.

IDW's The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics: Dick Briefer's Frankenstein gives the best overview Briefer's humorous and horrific takes on the Monster, with selections of both. All selections are in color printed on flat comic paper; it is like reading something from the spinner rack at the local 5 & 10. Features: Amply-illustrated multi-page introduction by Craig Yoe. (Each volume of The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics is top-notch and is highly recommended.)

Dark Horse's Frankenstein: The Mad Science of Dick Briefer is a collection of the complete first seven issues Briefer's humorous take on the Monster. All stories are in color printed on flat paper but not comic paper; it is like reading a well done trade paperback. Features: One-page forward by John Arcudi. (This is a very nice collection and is recommended. It is interesting to note that Craig Yoe, the driving force behind IDW's The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics, is given a special thanks in this collection and thus to this reader that shows that this has some of the "B sides" of Briefer's humorous Monster work that Yoe could not fit in the IDW collection.)

Idea Man Production's The Monster of Frankenstein: Dick Breifer's 1950s Horror Comic Epic is a collection of Briefer's 1949-1952 all-horror take on the Monster. All stories are printed in black and white. Features: Three-page introduction by David Jacobs and Afterwords by E.J. Robinson and Alicia Jo Rabins. (This is a great collection of Briefer's horrific take on the Monster. The black and white printing akin to something from an old Warren Creepy and does not take away from the stories. But, after seeing the color reprints in the other two collections, it is a bit of a let down. It is a soft cover too which, again, when compared to the other hard cover collections, it is a bit of a let down.)

Each of the three books has its pros and cons. In an absolutely perfect world, IDW's The Chilling Archive of Horror Comics would have devoted two volumes on Briefer's Frankenstein, one volume dedicated to the humorous like Dark Horse's but with a longer Yoe illustrated introduction on the humorous and one volume dedicated to the horrific like Idea Man Productions but with a longer Yoe illustrated introduction on the horrific. The world not being perfect a reader can choose scholarly, strictly humor, strictly horror, or, like this reader, splurge on all three.

I don't particularly like them but son loves them!

The Captain Underpants books were not my favorite books, coming from a perspective of a parent. Much of the content is crude, talking about pee, poo, boogers, and whatnot. But that part is bearable, because it's also what my son finds so funny with the book. The aspect that irks me the most are the comics, where half of the words are misspelled. Sure, I know that the comics are supposed to be written by a child, but I really do not want my son becoming confused with spelling words incorrectly. I have explained that the words are spelled as a child would sound them out, and he understands that.

If I was judging this as a parent, I would give it 3 stars. But I have to give it 4. Why? Because my son, WHO HATES TO STUDY or read, will on his own volition, pick up these books from our huge library of books, and sit down for an hour reading this, while laughing out loud hysterically. He will read some of these books like a maniac, reading it from cover to cover, until it is finished. This is a normal 7 year old boy who, remember, hates to study. He finds the panorama (where you flip the pages and the pictures move) fascinating, and will flip back and forth many times, laughing like a demon to himself.

So, if Captain Underpants can get my son to do any reading at all, I have to rate it higher and give props to Dav Pilkey.

By the way, this set is a great value, because I bought the both of the 3 set books at around sixteen to twenty dollars a piece, and here you would get the whole collection, including the newest book that just came out this summer 2011.

Wish my older son had read this series...

First let me say that I am not a fan of bathroom humor. That being said, I could not be more appreciative of this series. My 7 year old son loves them and has become an avid reader because of these books. I reluctantly read the books with him and have since become a huge fan of the stories, myself. But before I can tell you that story, I have to tell you this story. :-)
My older son is not much of a reader. He never found a genre that captivated him. Consequently, getting him to read anything is always a struggle. But since my younger son has read all of the Captain Underpants books plus Super Diaper Baby and Ook and Gluk, he has become an enthusiastic reader!
I prefer Captain Underpants over the others because the vocabulary is more demanding. We can't wait until the 11th book comes out!
