Marketing for the Masochist

I guess I'm really going against the masses with my 2-star review of this book since the authors claim that it was so successful it warranted a third edition, but I was sorely disappointed with my purchase and plan on returning it. The book opens up with a thorough and dry introduction about why *disciplined* marketing planning is so important. I can't say I was really sold on their main argument--which was basically that marketing can only be done well when it's totally comprehensive and systematic. Those are definitely good traits to adopt in any undertaking, but I just feel that this book is overkill.
The book touts its main benefit as reducing the complexity of coming up with a marketing plan to "just" a 10-step process. It then takes two chapters and about 75 pages just to outline only the first step of this process, called the business review, and describes in painstaking detail everything that the marketer or marketing consultant should do in order to get as thorough an understanding of the business as possible.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all about doing my due diligence and developing a thorough understanding of the company I'm doing a marketing plan for, but creating a marketing plan in the manner that these authors describe would easily take over 300 hours of time.
What's more, I don't get the sense from this book that there is an overarching guiding theory into which all elements of the book can be placed in context. Rather, it seems the approach of the authors is to take every known idea from the canon of marketing and incorporate each idea into some step of the lengthy 10-step process.
In the end, I just feel like this book goes overboard with the requirements it demands of the "disciplined" and "comprehensive" marketer. I can see why they use the word disciplined to describe their approach since in my view it would be truly painful to endure it.
I was very interested to read the reviews of others on this book, and I was disappointed to find that I had the opportunity to be the first reviewer. I'll keep looking around for my dream "how to prepare a marketing plan" book, but in the meantime I've realized that the "disciplined and comprehensive approach" is not for me.

The best hands-on book available

I've been using this book since 1995. It's not the type of book you'd read cover to cover, but it's an invaluable planning resource for any marketing manager. The authors leave no stoned unturned. If you are writing a plan or launching a business, this is the best practical book out there. Other marketing books get bogged down in theoretical case studies that offer no hands-on tools. This book is a great tool.

The Goliath Of Marketing Books

If you are a mid-sized company, I can't imagine that there is a better book out there for you to plan your marketing by. This is a massive tome that covers all aspects of marketing, from building a brand to market position to advertising. Its a book that you probably won't read straight through, but that could be a valuable reference for your company.

As solid as the advice in this book is, it has one major drawback: its overwhelming size. This book would not be helpful for a smaller business where the marketing team is just one person. And it probably won't help huge companies with dedicated marketing arms. But, if you are looking for a plan to take your mid-sized company forward then this may be the perfect book.

Some of the things that I really like about this book include:

* Tons of visuals. Helps make the massive amount of material more digestible.

* Case studies. Proven companies tell their tales to support the marketing principles.

* Table of Contents, Index. Very well done contents and index make this a valuable reference source for your business library.

All in all, a very helpful marketing text. Recommended.

Useful PACE workout manual

This is a great book on how to use the PACE method of fitness. It's a little earlier than Dr. Sear's later book entitled PACE - The 12-minute Fitness Revolution, but has some additional charts in the back of the book which can be copied and used for your exercise periods in tracking your progress. Worth reading and using.

Carsen Taite is an avid reader and writer of lesbian fiction. Carsen works by day (and sometimes night) as a criminal defense attorney in Dallas, Texas. Though her day job is often stranger than fiction, she can’t seem to get enough and spends much of her free time devouring novels, lesbian fiction in particular.

Carsen is an active member of the GLBT community, participating in several organizations on both the local and state levels. Carsen is married (Canadian-style) and she and her spouse live near White Rock Lake in Dallas where they enjoy cycling and walking the trails with their fuzzy beasts.

Beyond Boring

Technically, nothing is wrong with the writing here. Taite writes well and creates a convincing setting when it comes to lawyers and their professional jargon. My problem with this book is that we mostly drown in what the author knows best (professional setting) and don't get enough plot and romance. This story seemed to move along in real-time and when I got to page 100 in this 231 page book, I realized nothing really happened. The leads barely meet and very little on this central case happens. I didn't really care about any of these characters. I found myself skimming most of this book.

What we get here is one pretty brown-haired and green-eyed Texan prosecutor (Cory Lance) who is suspended for dishonest stuff and she ends up volunteering for the other side to help clean up her rep and keep her job. In doing so, she is assigned to Eric Washington's case... an African-American on death row who claims he is innocent. When his estranged sister from Florida shows up to support him any way she can, she ends up working closely with Cory. However, Cory does have a long-term lover.

Serena Washington is an attractive mocha-skinned African-American who was separated from her brother Eric when she's a young girl. Her father is gone and her mother was a junkie and they both end up in foster homes. Serena is quickly adopted by a nice (white?) family and grows up right. Eric isn't and has a troubled life. Despite a little bit of background we get on these siblings, the story really isn't about their relationship. I couldn't really figure out what the author wanted me to care about for the first chunk of the book. Also, Serena's feelings about women and relationships is murky.

When the romance finally shows up, it's a bland one and not given much focus. Nothing sexy to save it either. The one bedroom scene is a fleeting, non-graphic blurb, and by the time it arrived, I really just wanted the book to end already. Honestly, the picture of Carsen Taite on the back of the book with tape over her mouth was the sexiest imagery I got from this book and I found myself turning the book over all through my read and smirking... love a hot nerd in bondage, lol. As for the characters within, I wasn't really feeling any chemistry here, and I didn't get how Serena could stick around so long. I mean, I don't understand how Serena was helping out with this case. She is praised for it, but I didn't get it.

I am not really into books where the romance isn't clearly at the forefront, despite a whole other plot. I might feel differently if the plots were actually interesting and original in lesfic, but mostly they aren't. I come here to escape in a sexy romance, and I kinda feel sorry for writers who think any other part of the story can possibly be more interesting. This is the second book I've read by this author, and I kinda felt that way about the first as well, but it wasn't as dull (just half as dull). If you like a book that is focused outside of the romance and sounds realistic but mostly goes nowhere, then you may like this one more than I did. But I saw it all as pretty boring.

And I gotta say... there musta been a diversity meeting at Bold Strokes Books because after years of seldom seeing minority leads, this is suddenly the third BSB author among my random picks whose book was released last fall and has an ethnic lead. Amazing. Or just coincidence? lol. Either way, I applaud the effort... but can't resist pointing out that this lead is Black whose mom is a junkie and her brother's in prison... Melissa Brayden's lead is a Mexican "cleaning lady," and Rachel Spangler couldn't even think up a stereotype and simply regurgitated the adolescent trip she took abroad with her high school Spanish class. C'mon people... where's the originality in characterization???!!???

A NICE BOOK NOT TO THIN, NOT TO THICK. SEVERAL GOOD PHOTOS AS WELL. EASY TO READ. THIS IS A NICE ADDITION TO ANY ONE WHO CRAVES BEARS, INCLUDING NATURE ARTISTS. MY NEW-USED BOOK WAS VERY CHEAP AND NEARLY NEW. VERY HAPPY WITH BUYING USED BOOKS THUS SO FAR.

Et tu, Brute!

Most of the sufferings forced upon Pakistan flow from the friend who seduced her right in infancy - Remember month long state visit of Pakistan's First Prime Minister, Liaqat Ali Khan, though Americans do not like to offer 'free lunch' even to their near and dear ones.

Liaqat was killed to pave way. Income a General, Ayub Khan, in 1958 and since then the strange bed-fellows (Proxy rulers in Pakistan and neo-cons leaders in USA)are in love-hate game controlled with 'carrot and stick'.

I have read Cohan's 'Pakistan Army' also so many others. Sure, American scholars have masterly grasp over the research they undertake, mostly because of immense resources at their disposal and Ziring was Director of Development Administration Programmes and Professor of Political Science at Western Michigan University and had been in contact with `top echelon' in Pakistan for decades. Yes, he is right in what he wrote, but to whom his this book is directed at? This "inchoate nation" of 150 million people 40% of whom live below poverty line, Pakistani elite or the USA? 90% of Pakistanis cannot read and understand a Book in English such as this one. The later beneficiaries are, however, making full use of such works to perpetuate their control on the destiny of Pakistan!

The book is the best in scope and content as well as style. Must be translated in Urdu so that common Pakistanis should know, what and how they are where they are today and that light maybe for them at the end of tunnel, but alas! The tunnel has been made very long through twists and twirls.
